Title: MUTANTOR! Dice engine for critique
Post by: Giblet Blizzard on January 02, 2012, 11:35:53 PM
Hi

I'm starting work on MUTANTOR! and one of the things I want to nail is a dice engine mechanic that reflects the setting. So yeah— MUTANTOR! is obviously gonna be crawling with mutant freaks, and the game mechanic should be something like that too.

If you can spare a couple of minutes to have a read and share your appraisal I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!

here's my developments on the MUTANTOR dice system. This is the nitty gritty totally mechanical aspect of game design, but if you can slog through it and share your thoughts I'd be real appreciative. Thanks!

I don't think any dice mechanic really reflects any setting, in the direct way that you seem to be talking about.

You can use similar terminology or something (eg I have an 80s action movie system, so I'll call this dice the OH SHIT! Dice, or I have a Western system so I'll use Poker Dice and the Dead Man's Hand is a critical failure), but really I don't think that will help create an atmosphere in the long run, once players get used to the terminology and stop thinking about what it means.

I also think would-be RPG designers spend way too much time trying to think of novel dice mechanics, when you consider how much difference they actually make to players.

Back at it again after being snowed in by an artstorm. Hoping to make a lot of progress on this over the next few weeks and as always your input is awesome.
