Title: [FATE 3.0] Rating Aspects?
Post by: The Butcher on February 04, 2011, 08:15:50 AM
One of my (few) complaints with FATE 3.0 is the idea that all Aspects are born equal. This means that, if two characters are fighting a duel over, say, a fistful of gold florins, "World's Greatest Swordsman" counts as much as "Greedy Bastard".

What I'd like to see is Aspects rated on the FATE ladder, and adding their value to the relevant roll upon expenditure of a FATE point. Of course, if one does away entirely with FATE points, that's pretty much how PDQ works; but for the time being let's assume I want to keep the FATE point economy intact.

However, rating Aspects on the ladder will seriously upset the probability curve, shifting it to the right most of the time, and possibly making Players hesitant to spend their hard-earned Fate Points on Aspects rated [+1].

Also, think of "(mostly) negative" Aspects -- you know, the ones that get you into trouble so the GM compels you, and you recover Fate Points. Like "Sucker For A Pretty Face" or "Eats Like A Pig"? Even those can be Tagged when appropriate (like wooing a girl, or a hot dog eating contest, respectively), so they'd have to be rated positively along the Ladder. And how would this rating impact Fate Point recovery, if at all?

What do you all think? Is this mod viable, or too much trouble? AM I better served by scraping off FATE for PDQ?

With 'World's Greatest Swordsman' vs. 'Greedy Bastard' in FATE seem to have the same level of applicability to a swordfight, as well as the same level of scale....In your fix the Worlds Greatest Swordsman (Superb swordsmanship) is still in trouble fighting the Worlds' Greediest Man...(Superb Greed..)?

Adding a scale would as you say give characters a boost in how often they achieve things..though you could perhaps use the Aspect's level to replace the other stat rather than adding?

BTW What's PDQ ??
