SPECIAL NOTICE
Malicious code was found on the site, which has been removed, but would have been able to access files and the database, revealing email addresses, posts, and encoded passwords (which would need to be decoded). However, there is no direct evidence that any such activity occurred. REGARDLESS, BE SURE TO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS. And as is good practice, remember to never use the same password on more than one site. While performing housekeeping, we also decided to upgrade the forums.
This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The RPGPundit's Own Forum Rules
This part of the site is controlled by the RPGPundit. This is where he discusses topics that he finds interesting. You may post here, but understand that there are limits. The RPGPundit can shut down any thread, topic of discussion, or user in a thread at his pleasure. This part of the site is essentially his house, so keep that in mind. Note that this is the only part of the site where political discussion is permitted, but is regulated by the RPGPundit.

Yeah, sorry Zak, but you know one of the things I've found out, from this whole shitfest?

I never want to post on G+ or Twitter; it's just a toxic wasteland of high school drama, of the worst sort.

Why are you apologizing to me for that?

G+ is okay. Twitter is completely unsuited to conversation, although it has other good uses.

Cause you had to find out firsthand, the sinister nature of the beast, for me to learn from your example.

Quote from: Spinachcat;776229Serious Question!!!

Who are these people (Hurley & Young) and why do they matter?

Quote from: Zak S;7762311. Assholes.
2. They don't matter.
(Unless you do something in games they don't like, in which case they fuck with you. Like, say, consult on 5th edition of D&D. In which case they libel you.)

How far do you have to dig to find the libel?

Most of the D&D world has never heard of those people, or you, or me, for that matter.  All you're doing is giving them publicity.
You should go to GaryCon.  Period.

The rules can\'t cure stupid, and the rules can\'t cure asshole.

I'll agree; but at the same time, if the first dozen links that show up if someone Googles your name, were "You're a homophobe!" "You hate all WOMENZ!" and other such drek, it'd probably bother you too, if your Internet reputation is important to you (for various reasons).

Sooner or later my willpower will give out and I'll post that pic in a TBP thread...

Quote from: Zak S;776234Being "just mean" is way different than accusing someone of a crime.
Technically, none of being a homophobe, lying, or apologizing for rape is inherently a crime. Really, I don't give a shit about the legalities, though.

Among most people, if I'm talking to someone and suddenly they tell me to go fuck myself with a spoon, I can reasonably ask them to apologize.

If I'm talking to someone and they politely express how they think something I worked on was harmful - I can disagree, but I can't reasonably demand an apology.

It's is an art piece by Raymond Pettibon, a prolific, and very sarcastic artist starting from the 1970's LA punk scene.

Ok, but this is important:

If you're a random googler and you come upon someone saying "Fuck this person with a spoon" you think "Oh internet grief, who cares?"

If you're a random googler and you come upon someone saying "You are sexist" you think "Oh shit, might this person be sexist?"

Mere abuse is not damaging to the target's business or reputation and does not muddy the waters of what is true and false and what's easy or hard to find out and doesn't (in short) waste the innocent person's time checking them or believing them.

False accusations do. That's why there are laws about them.

Depends where you are. Some poor kids on Tumblr stumble over it without even knowing who Pundit and I are. The FIRST THING THEY HEAR about the new d&D trough the videogame rumor mill is that 2 consultants are allegedly homophobic.

That's sad and fucked up and their fault.

Quote from: snooggums;776265What she said was rude and offensive, and deserves an apology, no matter what her method of saying it was.
You're saying that here on theRPGsite? I agree that the phrasing there was rude, such that I would raise an eyebrow at it if was said in a polite conversation among friends.

Really, I would love it if we could have standards of politeness around here such that a bit of rudeness like that made waves. However, when I look around on this site and these threads in particularly (including the quoted G+ thread), there is a ton of rudeness from all sides.

From my point of view, accusing people of homophobia, calling them lying shitsacks, calling them assholes and scum, etc. - these are the sorts of things we could use less of first. Then maybe we'll move on to encouraging less aggressive and/or passive-aggressive phrasing and so forth.
