let me just go on an add some personal opinion to this...

the absolute WORST type of non-smoker is an ex-smoker.

i promised myself that when i stopped smoking cigarettes, i wouldn't become one of those screechy know-it-all's who tsk-tsk's smokers and gets all bent out of shape when someone lights up around them.

Yes, just like the worst kind of religious fanatic is a convert, or the worst kind of critic of anything is an ex-practitioner.  All the energy they previous put into something goes instead into despising it.

France has just followed suit, I believe.

Keep in mind that not all countries deal with their smoking bans the same way.  When I was living in Paris (four years ago), they had already had a city-wide smoking ban for something like 14 years, but everyone smoked everywhere.  The French are far less likely to just do something because "its the law".

Here in Uruguay they recently passed a smoking ban, but obedience of that law is lax at best. In summer, most people don't smoke inside a restaurant, because its actually so wonderful outside. But in private clubs, taxis, etc, you see smoking all the time; and come winter I have little doubt that people will be right back to smoking indoors, especially now that the novelty of the ban is wearing off.
