While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

"I have at one time or another, insulted everybody - and I'm proud of that.

I think religion is bad and drugs are good.

I think longevity is less important than fun

I think stereotypes are true, abstinence is a perversion, Bush's lies are worse than Clinton's and there's nothing sexy about being old or pregnant.

I think September 11th changed nothing

I think pornography stops rape, AIDS ribbons are stupid, and flag burning makes me feel patriotic.

I think death is not the worst thing that can happen to you, people have too much self-esteem, and being drunk is funny. I think children are not innocent, God doesn't write books, and Jesus wasn't a Republican.

I'm for Mad Cow disease and against suing tobacco companies.

I think girls hate each other, no doesn't always mean no, you have to lie to stay married, women's sports are boring and the Olympics are gay."

"Married men live longer.
Yes, and an "indoor cat" also lives longer. Its a furball with a broken spirit, that can only look out onto a world that it can never enjoy. But it does technically live longer."

"I  think flying planes into a building was a faith-based initiative. I think religion is a neurological disorder."

"We are a nation that is unenlightened because of religion. I do believe that. I think religion stops people from thinking. I think it justified crazies"

"A lot of good has come from drugs. I think "Penny Lane" is worth 10 dead kids. Dark Side of the Moon is worth 100 dead kids. Because a lot of kids wouldn't even be born if it weren't for that album, so it evens out."

"The true axis of evil in America is the genius of our marketing combined with the stupidity of our people"

The guy is as big of a fucktard as Bill O'Reilly.
Some of what he has to say is just plain stupid.

Sounds like someone has issssuuuuees. Maybe he might like to bid on those "Gor" books I'm selling on eBay.

This being said, I think that he's about as worthy of serious consideration as O'Reilly, Ann Coulter or Al Franken. They're all "entertainers" in a very tenuous sense of the world, and looking to them for enlightenment is like looking for a shiny silver dollar in a cat's asshole.

Bill Maher is one of the funniest and boldest men in showbiz these days.

And he's right; about marriage and about fun vs. longevity. American society is obsessed with it.
People tell me that I shouldn't smoke a pipe because smoking "take years off my life", but that's bullshit of the worst kind. Besides the fact that the only serious medical study on PIPE smoking and life expectancy indicated that pipe smokers live longer than non-smokers; even if it really did "take years off my life"; so fucking what?? Its the crappy years, the ones at the end; so who gives a flying fuck, if in the meanwhile I get to enjoy decades of a passtime I love?
Same with sex.
Same with alcohol.
Same with drugs.
Same with everything: fuck's sake, only an utter coward will choose to deny himself something that is enjoyable in this moment for the sake of the possibility that he might squeeze out another 2 or 3 days of just existing, at worst as a vegetable or in horrible pain, at absolute best as a boring old man filled with regrets about chances not taken.

Fuck that.

And yes, sorry to all the married folks out there, but the "institution" of marriage is bullshit.
If you're with a woman and you love her and you are monogamous with her at this time, that's great for you. But you know what? its exactly fucking the same, especially in this day and age, if you're married or if you're just monogamously "shacking up". There's nothing special or magical about the state of marriage, and definitely nothing superior. Its an old relic from the times when women were property and socio-political alliances were created by the exchange of said property, covered up with a two-coat slap-dash of farcical religious blessing from the Great Sky Pixie.

Given that most married people today will end up in divorce anyways, and that there's no longer any statistical difference between people who say they are married and people who say they are living together outside of marriage but in a long-term monogamous relationship as far as the length of their relationship is concerned, I really have a hard time with the fact that society views married people as a preferable superior condition and married people, especially women, try to push on us that it is the preferred state.
Of course, that makes sense. Because a guy like me is a menace to all of my married friend's wives: I remind their husbands of what it was like to be autonomous, to not have to ask permission for things, to be able to have the freedom to do what one wants, when one wants. In other words, I undo all the months or years of hard work these women have gone through to "train" their men, to make them "sociable", or in other words, to take their balls and put them in little jars up on the mantlepiece.

So thank the great magnet there's dudes like Bill Maher, calling it like it is on the significance of freedom.

Well, we'll have to agree to disagree.
I have a great marriage that I wouldn't trade for anything.

dar

'Pundit, are you fucking serious about marriage? What a pile of stinking rotten gooye guts. I know your experience seems to be the norm but my marriage is fun, and yes at times, hard, and worth every damn minute of it.

The hippie myth that marriage is a joke is just that, a myth. For you to buy into it is the fucking funniest thing I've read all day. And just one more fucking example of why Bill the 'LIBERALTARIAN' is a miserable two faced lying Peta supporting twat.

Edit: I have to admit that he can be funny as hell.

beejazz

Yeah... I've seen mangled corpses out of car accidents that looked better than your portrayal of marriage.

Dude, it can't be that bad can it?

Can it be? Sure it can be.

But it isn't always or for everyone. Many people have incredible relationships. The key is for both parties to be able to communicate.

(Note: genuine communication is never merely uni-directional.)

I do not agree with everything Bill Maher says, but I'm willing to listen to whatever he has to say because so much of it is right.

However, he's a fucktard to be for mad cow disease, that thing is horrible and I would not wish it on people I'd gladly see dead.
RPGPundit is a fucking fascist asshole and a hypocritial megadouche.

Absolutely true. Bovine Spongiform Encephalitis does horrible things to human brains. I don't see how anyone can be "for" brain disease...unless they feel like people who consume red meat should have to die an agonizing death. I'm assuming Pundit does not fall into this category.

Yeah, I wonder if Maher had actually seen a cow with advanced mad cow disease. If he had and was still for it, he's a real asshole.

Too bad he's so right about so many other issues.....

I think he enjoys the fact that PEOPLE suffer from it after eating parts of a slaughtered cow. Still fucked up, but I think he would show sympathy for the cow.

James J Skach

I think, perhaps, there are misconceptions about why people get married. Especially when Pundit uses the neat rhetorical trick of implying that current marriage is about "property and socio-political alliances were created by the exchange of said property, covered up with a two-coat slap-dash of farcical religious blessing from the Great Sky Pixie," by comparing it to marriage from the 19th century.

I had a friend in college who was shacked-up with a girl. We were walking down the street one day and I asked him if he was going to marry her. He told me no.  I said, "Why not? You've been living together for two years, you seem to do well together."  I'll never forget his response.

"You know, if I wanted to leave tomorrow, there's nothing to stop me. I could just walk in, pack my bags, and leave. There's no commitment. If we were married, it would be a completely different story."

Now twenty years on and I've been happily married for fourteen years. I'm not a religious guy. I'm not some aristocracy who got married to seal the agreement between two great powers. Neither of us had much in the way of property. So why get married?

I always tell my wife there's one reason she can always count on me not to leave her.  I made a promise.  I didn't just make a promise to her one night.  I stood up in front of all of the important people in my world – parents, family, and friends – and made that promise.  I told all of those people I would be with this woman and no other. I made that promise because I did want to spend the rest of my life with her and no other. And I knew that without that promise, the commitment would not be the same. As my friend Eric said, "It's a completely different story."

I think nowadays, people take that promise lightly.  They don't really think about what they are doing. They say the words, and they do so in front of all those people, but they don't get it. It's that loss that has changed marriage, IMHO.

I also happen to think that if you want to have kids, marriage is really the best approach.  It's that stability that provides the best environment. As long as that's the case, I think marriage is a useful institution from a societal standpoint.

This is my theory.

I know that I, for one, am far to unwilling to allow someone else to "change me" to their liking for me to ever be married. And lets face it, marriage inevitably requires one partner to change in order to suit the preferences of the other, and its almost always the man who has to do the changing.

Well, on a level of personal preference, I get that completely. I hate people.

No reason to go knockin' the institution.
