SPECIAL NOTICE
Malicious code was found on the site, which has been removed, but would have been able to access files and the database, revealing email addresses, posts, and encoded passwords (which would need to be decoded). However, there is no direct evidence that any such activity occurred. REGARDLESS, BE SURE TO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS. And as is good practice, remember to never use the same password on more than one site. While performing housekeeping, we also decided to upgrade the forums.
This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The RPGPundit's Own Forum Rules
This part of the site is controlled by the RPGPundit. This is where he discusses topics that he finds interesting. You may post here, but understand that there are limits. The RPGPundit can shut down any thread, topic of discussion, or user in a thread at his pleasure. This part of the site is essentially his house, so keep that in mind. Note that this is the only part of the site where political discussion is permitted, but is regulated by the RPGPundit.

You're right; sounds pretty silly.

You might not believe this, but I agree.  They both sound silly.

I'll believe it if you say so, but who was saying either? Apart, perhaps, from Bill Maher.

Uhhh...Terry Eagleton? I'm sorry, I inferred that your quote of him meant you supported the information in the quote.

Hmmm...it seems to me Eagleton isn't saying anything of the sort.

as far as I know his anti-religious diatribes have never been matched in his work by a critique of the global capitalism that generates the hatred, anxiety, insecurity and sense of humiliation that breed fundamentalism.

That's to say, Dawkins accounts not at all for the dynamic of global political economy, in which he is certainly not alone.

Instead, as the obtuse media chatter has it, it’s all down to religion.

And there you have it (my emphases).

Correct. But I think Eagleton is saying "Hey, it's not religion, it's capitalism." Or at the very least, "Hey, it's not all religion.  Capitalism makes people do Evil things too!"

At least, that was my read of his comment.

I think it's more like 'you'll never understand ideology until you understand material reality.'

But, for the sake of argument, what exactly is wrong with your formulation of what Eagleton says? It's simplistic, but it expresses some truth.

Quote from: James J SkachHmmm...in 2004, about 2.4 million people died...total..in the US. So you're tossing out the idea that the Us diet is responsible for..what...80% of deaths?

(you used the term "millions", which implies multiple millions, which means you're actually implying 80% is your bottom ratio).

Yes I clearly mispoke.

Still, what would you say, 500,000? I think CDC lists 250K yearly from "physical inactivity".

Add some from column B (heart disease), a healthy dose from column C (high blood pressure) and a WHOLE lot from column D (diabetis) and I dont think doubling that number would be out of bounds.

Still, even if we go with the bare minimum, that's a whole lot more dangerous than, say, planes crashing into buildings.

Back to Bill Maher, I do like some of his views but find others to be intolerable, and he's a bit of a hypocrite at times.

But all in all, I'll generally listen to him because in most cases the wheat outweighs the chaff.
RPGPundit is a fucking fascist asshole and a hypocritial megadouche.
