SPECIAL NOTICE
Malicious code was found on the site, which has been removed, but would have been able to access files and the database, revealing email addresses, posts, and encoded passwords (which would need to be decoded). However, there is no direct evidence that any such activity occurred. REGARDLESS, BE SURE TO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS. And as is good practice, remember to never use the same password on more than one site. While performing housekeeping, we also decided to upgrade the forums.
This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The RPGPundit's Own Forum Rules
This part of the site is controlled by the RPGPundit. This is where he discusses topics that he finds interesting. You may post here, but understand that there are limits. The RPGPundit can shut down any thread, topic of discussion, or user in a thread at his pleasure. This part of the site is essentially his house, so keep that in mind. Note that this is the only part of the site where political discussion is permitted, but is regulated by the RPGPundit.

It's not a matter of disliking to learn new games. It's a matter of what I like more, learning or playing. I like playing more. Sure, I could learn all kinds of new games, but I'd rarely get to play.

4e definitely has an Old School feel. If you disagree, cool. I won\'t throw any hyperbole out to prove the point.

Don't worry, the thread is from August.

By contrast, I'm nearing that age, have kids, but simply don't have the interest. I'm not so much interested in the "meta-hobby" of learning new game. It just doesn't excite me that much anymore. I'm more about playing than learning new games. So people who come on with the old "yer too lazy to learn new systems" usually earn an earful from me.

I'm not saying anybody's too 'lazy'. I'm saying that the 'I-don't-have-time' thing is a little weak.

"The point is, ladies and gentleman, is that D20 - for lack of a better word - is good. D20 is right. D20 works. D20 clarifies, cuts through and captures the essence of the roleplaying spirit. D20, in all of its forms - greed for life, for money, for XP, knowledge - has marked the upward surge of mankind. And D20 - you mark my words - will not only save Wizards of the Coast but that other malfunctioning group called 'roleplaying'."

I bow to you, Jong. Really, really good.

Unless you have some supernatural insight into how everyone else's life is going, there's no way you can pass such a judgment. Why the fuck should I spend time doing something that I find less enjoyable than another activity when I have limited time? Why shouldn't I maximize my enjoyment of my hobbies? For fuck's sake. Hell, I could just as easily say that the "I have time to have a full life, play my RPG of choice on a regular basis, and learn new games on a daily/weekly basis" stuff smells like bullshit.

I never said you should spend your time doing anything in particular, in fact, Colonel. If I'm allowed to not like D&D (and sometimes I wonder), you are certainly entitled to play nothing else.

But, as I've said countless times, I don't just play D&D only. I've learned plenty of games over the years, especially back when I was a teen and in my early 20s. Nowadays, the time I have to enjoy myself is more limited, and I'd prefer to spend that time playing rather than plowing through a new rules-set. Even with that said, I still try out new games, but the notion that some look down their noses at people who don't allocate a major portion of their time to learning new games irritates the piss out of me. Well, not really, but it irritates me about as much as anything else on the internet.

If you think I'm looking down my nose, you're wrong. Well, perhaps literally I am, since I'm typing on a laptop at a desk.

Eh. I'm not seeing a huge distinction. I don't say I don't "have" time. I say it's not worth my time. If I'd rather wath Alias reruns or play with my toddler than invest every waking moment learning new games, then that's my choice, and a perfectly valid one when it comes to managing my time around a leisure activity. It's my judgement, not yours.
