This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.
The RPGPundit's Own Forum Rules
This part of the site is controlled by the RPGPundit. This is where he discusses topics that he finds interesting. You may post here, but understand that there are limits. The RPGPundit can shut down any thread, topic of discussion, or user in a thread at his pleasure. This part of the site is essentially his house, so keep that in mind. Note that this is the only part of the site where political discussion is permitted, but is regulated by the RPGPundit.

I've used tvm.

I prefer WindowMaker or Enlightenment for desktopless WM.

Sadly, it appears the PC-BSD doesn't like VMWare. It errors out when it gets to the partitioning, I think it does not like the virtual drive.

I am not up to speed on VMWare specifically, but don't most of those require an image of some sort that is already configured?

Usually VMWare's pretty good about installing from an OS CD.  It even has a setup wizard to walk you through it, and OS extensions for FreeBSD, but it seems to choke on the PC-BSD variant for some reason.

I might give it a second try, could be a fluke, it's odd to me that it would support FreeBSD out of the box but not this.  Maybe it's a bug in the installer?

That is entirely possible.  Maybe try a fresh download, just to be sure, and it that doesn't work, I would start looking into the differences between PC-BSD and FreeBSD.  It could be something as simple (and rage inducing) as one being half an update back on gcc or something, or perhaps even less noticible, one of the rarely used libs is a version old.

It is, however, perfect for me. All I use GIMP for is texture work for level editing and very minor image work MSPaint and AutoREALM cannot do. Photoshop would be overkill for that stuff, but a free suite like GIMP is a godsend.

Ohhh I just recently found out about Darkmod, loaded it up, and LOVE it!

Ok, back to the Linux conversation... ;)

Indeed, The Dark Mod is completely Linux-compatible! All you need is a copy of Doom 3 (also Linux-compatible) to play an ever-increasing number of sophisticated, nice-looking heist scenarios. :)
Now with a Zine!

Honestly my own biggest complaint in the OS sphere of late is the woeful lack of any unique or innovative options.

I remember in the late 90s, early 00's, when my OS addiction was in full swing, it seemed like there was a dizzying array of alternative OS projects all over the web, and whole sites dedicated to cataloging them.

But these days it's pretty much Windows, or Unix.  Everything that isn't Windows, just winds up being Unix.  OS X is Unix, Linux is Unix, iOS is Unix underneath and so is Android, shit, so is the OS on the damn Playstation 3.

Unix is goddamn everywhere and in every thing, and it seems like there just isn't room in the world for other options anymore.

I get that the commonality of knowledge and software is handy, but would it kill for some more creative approaches?  Shit, even some of the non Unix OSes, like AROS and the other AmigaOS descendents, have been modified to be more like Unix.

The innovation is in scaled cloud computing, PHP Dev, Python, and Java apps.
Just check out all the Eclipse projects... admittedly many of them have ported unix toolsets, but hey, you can always add on to it with C or your favorite custom built scripting language.
Blackmoor grew from a single Castle to include, first, several adjacent Castles (with the forces of Evil lying just off the edge of the world to an entire Northern Province of the Castle and Crusade Society's Great Kingdom.

Coding really isn't my gig.

My interest in OS research was more on the user and  design level.  I love finding new experiences and ways to interact with the computer, though geeking out over technical details I barely understand like RTOS and microkernels and shit is fun too.

my iPad has honestly given me the first unique OS experience in years, even though in some ways it sort of reminds me of some of the more primitive efforts from the days when it seemed every programmer and CS major went through Tennenbaum's book.
