This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The RPGPundit's Own Forum Rules
This part of the site is controlled by the RPGPundit. This is where he discusses topics that he finds interesting. You may post here, but understand that there are limits. The RPGPundit can shut down any thread, topic of discussion, or user in a thread at his pleasure. This part of the site is essentially his house, so keep that in mind. Note that this is the only part of the site where political discussion is permitted, but is regulated by the RPGPundit.

Some "artists" deserve to be replaced by "AI"

AI is going to massively overhaul entertainment, but I don't think that it will be as disastrous as people think. What will happen, of course, is the phony artists who are working to pay $100K+ of student debt will lose their shirts, but real artists make things AI can't replicate, and independent studio entrepreneurship will be more approachable than ever. I don't even think that the corporations peddling AI today will do particularly well; if what's happened with Stable Diffusion is any indicator, open source will beat the pants off the corporations investing billions into hardware and new hires if you give it long enough.

If you're an artist who actually has art in your soul and you're willing to take entrepeneurial risks, AI will give you superpowers and freedom. If you are an effects grunt at ILM who worked on The Last Jedi, you are not going to come out smelling like a rose. Pardon me for thinking this looks suspiciously like God's judgement.
I dunno man. Artists gotta eat and many start out doing thankless little work for megacorps. If all that work goes to AI then fewer artists will get a start. Maybe there are enough divinely inspired geniuses with financial means to create masterpieces for us to enjoy? I kind of doubt it. AI is free labor and that's a bigger win for megacorps than the small guy. I think we will see a lot more derivative junk being shoveled out the door. My 2 cents.

Megacorps want the AI not because of "free labor" but because it doesn't have an internet history that can be weaponized against them and because it can be programmed to ALWAYS support the current thing.

Look at who WotKKK has fired/screwed over: The lady that used to illustrate their MtG cards?

That was BEFORE they had an AI, then they hired a bunch of talentless activist hacks (same in every other megacorp) and ARE producing nothing but souless derivative junk:

What really innovative thing has WotKKK published? I can't remember one that's not basically an older D&D product being sodomized by corporate greed.

Disney?: They have a decade+ sodomizing their classics as live action or producing sequels, prequels and reboots (like all of hollyweird)

Now, give people without the budget a way to produce something to MAYBE compete with the megacorps?

Have you read Monster Hunter International? Now imagine Larry Correia with the tech to produce a movie without actors/studios/sets/etc based on his book?

The cat is out of the bag, no ammount of clamoring is going to put it back, but you could scream louder enough that government steps in and puts regulations in place to guarantee ONLY the megacorps will be able to use it.

For instance: You HAVE TO use at least 80% actors/writters, who benefits from such regulation? The small guy that can't pay actors or writters? or Disney and their ilk?

"AI" is but a tool, just like artists adapted to using photoshop and other graphic tech they need to adapt to incorporate the bots into their workflow. Then lower their prices which will be compensated by their ability to produce double, triple the ammount of work in the same time.

Here is why this forum tends to be so stupid. Many people here think Joe Biden is "The Left", when he is actually Far Right and every US republican is just an idiot.

Well you might be right. Maybe AI is an equalizer. I have my doubts.

It's a tool, okay. Existing tools like photoshop aren't too expensive for a small business. Other tools are more expensive, and are unaffordable to small guys. And the megacorps have their own tools that they don't share. If AI's a tool, it will likely follow the same pattern.

But the idea that it's a tool that artists will have to adapt to conflicts with the idea that a lone anime author could create a whole movie by himself. Is it just a tool or a replacement? Probably a little bit of both.

We as ordinary Joes also don't see everything. We don't know what OpenIA and Microsoft and the rest of them are not sharing.

All of that is true, but there's a monkey wrench in their gears, it's called Open Source and it's already in development, what's more it's being developed so you can run it locally (granted for images/video you NEED a very expensive rig but it's something many already have and use for playing video games.

For example, look up Blender, it can do everything the closed and for sale 3D animation tools can but it's opensource and free as in free beer.

Krita, is another example where photoshop and the like are rapiddly loosing their headstart.

For reference, if you aren't worried about being fast, a 350 dollar graphics card is more than sufficient to both use and train Stable Diffusion-based models. As long as it's Nvidia, ATI users need not apply. Same with Blender on that front, actually...

Ironically good text-based LLM AI work needs more vram than images, right now.

If the image on the left is the new Woke trash version of April O'Neil, and the one on the right is the AI version of the same, then as far as I'm concerned everyone doing all the current shows can go starve to death.

Since you don't like Arch I'm assuming you're talking of the image before the video starts, if so then you have it backwards, the image to the right is the woke trash the one to the left is one of many he got in a few minutes in some art bot.

Yes, I see now I got left and right wrong, somehow.

Yes, like you read, some "artists" deserve to loose their jobs to someone that knows how to use midjourney and simmilar bots.

Don't believe me? Watch the video.

That's gonna leave a mark.

"It can be used to create CP!" No shit sherlock!? Photoshop and every other technology can be used like that too. Doesn't mean the technology is to blame, but clearly the asshole in the video is a leftard and wants censorship. As evidenced by the "racist" content section a little before.

"It can be used to make slightly altered copies of a piece of art to scam buyers and the original artist!" No shit Sherlock!? Photoshop, Gimp, Krita, etc can be used like that too.

"It doesn't promote the original artist!" What original artist? It was trained in billions of images to understand how pixels are arraigned when you type sunset, it doesn't store the images, it's not using those images to alter and produce a copy,

I wan't to see the opinion of a non biased lawyer as to WHY it isn't fair use, fair use COVERS commercial use, it just needs to be transformative enough. "But muh consent!" When Sargon took Akhila Hughes vid and transformed it to produce a critique of her and her ideology without a single comment from him he didn't have to ask permission, yet IT was ruled "quintesencial fair use". Fair use also doesn't necesitate ANY payment to the original creator.

Now, given that (unless the user is trying to scam people) it's not producing a copy of anyone's art, how can ANYONE claim it's infringing on their market anymore than another artist who creates original art for covers for romance novels is infringing on any other artist on the same niche?

IANAL and all that but IMNSHO those are questions and arguments any lawyer worth their salt would put before a court. Given that there's multibillion corporations behind it I reckon they'll hire good competent lawyers.

And no, "but teh artist fee fees" isn't a legal argument.

So, 2+ hours wasted listening to an obviously biased and stupid individual making spurios accusations, false comparisons and appeals to emotion.

Sorry not sorry.

This covers the matter rather well I think;

I'm skeptical that a person's creative fulfillment is something A. Proveable in a court of law and B. A basis for copyright law.

IANAL, so I could be mistaken, but most of his arguments seemed to be special pleading for the ineffable creativity of the human soul.

I managed a little better on my first try without prompt crafting, but yeah, it would take some fine tuning.  Which is another thing, AI does not mean fast.  You can spend hours trying different prompts, sketches, loras, control nets, and other extensions.  You're trading one skill set for another.  Since I don't have drawing skills, this is an acceptable cost for me.

[edit]  Hey Brad, I found the missing leg on your 'donkey'.  I noticed that mine has five.  :-)

Other images I generated were more accurate to Gary, but I liked this one best.
