This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.
The RPGPundit's Own Forum Rules
This part of the site is controlled by the RPGPundit. This is where he discusses topics that he finds interesting. You may post here, but understand that there are limits. The RPGPundit can shut down any thread, topic of discussion, or user in a thread at his pleasure. This part of the site is essentially his house, so keep that in mind. Note that this is the only part of the site where political discussion is permitted, but is regulated by the RPGPundit.

Pipe Tournaments
« on: November 19, 2006, 09:17:48 AM »
Pipe smoking tournaments are pretty inane exercises really: its more an excuse to have a big conference, show off some new pipes, and then booze it up.
The tournament itself consists of the following: Everyone who signs up gets a free pipe (this year its a Di Capo, considered the best Argentian pipe brand), which they can keep.  They also get two grams of tobacco, and two matches.
At the starting time, you have two minutes to light your pipe with the two matches. After that, the matches are taken away.  Then you puff away.  Conversation is allowed, drinking water (nothing else) is allowed after the first ten minutes.
You have a tamper, which you can use, but no pipe cleaner.

The goal is to be the last one to have his pipe go out.

I did mention its kind of inane, but no less inane than, say, playing an RPG. Plus, its a great excuse for a piss-up and a vacation weekend.
Last year, the first time I attended, I made a reasonable showing at 41 minutes, and won a pipe.  The first place winner lasted 1hour 20minutes, and won a much nicer pipe. This year, I just want to do as well or a bit better than last year.  My practice runs so far have me clocking about 50 minutes, which isn't bad.

Waiting for someone from the forge to suggest pipe smoking contests as a conflict resolution mechanic...
