While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The RPGPundit's Own Forum Rules
This part of the site is controlled by the RPGPundit. This is where he discusses topics that he finds interesting. You may post here, but understand that there are limits. The RPGPundit can shut down any thread, topic of discussion, or user in a thread at his pleasure. This part of the site is essentially his house, so keep that in mind. Note that this is the only part of the site where political discussion is permitted, but is regulated by the RPGPundit.

Read an article on how the tech companies are being extremely helpful in providing data to prosecute anyone illegally in the Capital on 1/6/21. Apparently they're getting the warrants through on trespassing based on location data and then digging through other data to build bigger cases. The article says it's not chilling to free speech because it is only going after those already committing a crime (trespass), but it sounds biased as fuck. I'd link but I'm on a phone and I figure that anyone that's interested can find it themselves.

Yeah.  I remember a different response from Apple during the San Bernardino shooting...
That was about unlocking a user-secured device, right? This is a little different as it isn't about unlocking the device itself, but of the companies giving the FBI data from their web-based services and all of the things on the devices that those services have user-given permissions to access (like location). IOW, it sounds like all of those user agreements that people don't read and the menus of cross-app access that people quickly click by are what are going to be used to bite some of these people in their asses.

Oh good, now the FBI decides to do their job after telling the DC Police to stand down because there was no chance of any riot happening.

I would certainly trust them.
I'm interested to see how the tech companies play to this tune when another government, like China, decides to drop a hard lockdown/curfew on, say, Hong Kong and then demands the data on anyone out after the curfew based on their devices' locations.

That is true, which is why I'm not on Facebook, et al.  However Apple refused a legitimate court warrant after a crime in which a number of people were murdered and instead forced them to procure an actual court order to crack the device.  Then turned around a did it a second time in another incident.  This was supported by the other social media and the defense was the dead assailant's "right to privacy".  I have no problem with the providing of legitimate info through a legitimate warrant (or if the terms of service allow for it.)   I don't like the obvious double-standard on the defense portion of the argument by social media.

Might be hard to even prove trespass, since the police literally invited them in at a couple places.
Did they have the lawful authority to do so? I don't believe so.

It might make a difference in what specific charges may be leveled, but we will have to wait and see on that.

Does it matter? I forget the name, but there's a legal concept where a company can be bound by the statements of someone who appears to speak for the company, even if they weren't delegated the authority. I wouldn't put it past the government to exempt themselves, but cops aren't just in apparent positions of authority, they're in actual positions of authority. Plus, on a common sense level, if the cops wave you in that's a strong presumption it's fine.

You think that China has to ask for data?

In all fairness, that is true...as long as the defense lawyers do their damn research on the jury pool.

Maybe the tech companies will grant data access for the purposes of assisting in jury selection too... ;)

(I find the last one hilarious since it sure didn't bother Congress to demand banks loan money to people who had no chance of paying it off a while back. The result was the subprime mortgage mess.)

So yeah. You voted for Bidenharris, you voted for this stuff. Suck it down.

I hear China's really good at it, with their social credit scores. We should emulate them. Then make it so only those with high social credit scores will be able to sit on a jury. Or vote. It just makes sense, because those are privileges, not rights. Which can be taken away if you exercise your other rights, like free speech. Because free speech doesn't mean freedom from consequences. And those who use their freedom to speak out against what those in power say is right need to face consequences.

Sham impeachment to move forward with Democrat senator Patrick Leahy to preside.

Chief Justice John Roberts has declined to preside, since it's no longer an impeachment of a current president.

Ironic that so far all the communications and organization for this protest did occur on Facebook, Twitter and other Big Tech platforms, yet Amazon, Google and Apple canceled Parler.

All Sydney has to do is demonstrate the machines don't work as advertised, or that they can be easily manipulated or modified, by any group intent on cheating during the election.

I'll wager right now, this case will be quietly settled with a gag order because if the truth gets these machines were literally designed for cheating, then the entire election process is borked. Just like the banks are too big to fail, the election is too big to throw. I'm watching this case with interest.
Dominion has a solid case and doesn't fear discovery at all.  Every release of their machines and software have been audited by third parties and States for years.
I predict they won't settle because the survival of the company is on the line because of the allegations.
I also predict Powell will very likely be disbarred after she loses this case.

While I've bitched about Roberts punting on important issues for a while, I can't totally fault his reasoning on this one.

You want to charge Trump with something, charge him in a court of law... if you can.
