This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The RPGPundit's Own Forum Rules
This part of the site is controlled by the RPGPundit. This is where he discusses topics that he finds interesting. You may post here, but understand that there are limits. The RPGPundit can shut down any thread, topic of discussion, or user in a thread at his pleasure. This part of the site is essentially his house, so keep that in mind. Note that this is the only part of the site where political discussion is permitted, but is regulated by the RPGPundit.

I only ever dabbled in chess (yeah, and if it weren't for RPGs I'd have been a grand master, you bet) but it always seemed to me like knights were pretty awesome: shuffling around sideways and attacking other pieces that couldn't touch them. And I loved the knight fork tactic.

I think that webcomic sums up every gaming forum PERFECTLY.

Yep.

I thought it was particularly appropriate here, given the 'late unpleasantness.'

While as amusing as my list of debating tactics, apparently it doesn't fit into the RPG section.

Moved.

It reminds me of the "winning at D&D" thread. (I know, there's usually a winner at chess, it's completely different, sue me.)

To paraphrase Stormbringer: There are no worthless chess pieces, only worthless players.

As a Chess player the person calling the knight weak obviously doesn't know how chess works I'm not sure how this makes for a topic of discussion.

This fact is what the joke's based on, and also the point that it's making. [/statement of obvious]

In more words then. Since being on this board a number of people have shown that they do not believe that logically high level threats (like wizards or demons) would use their powers effectively. When people state how these threats can use their powers effectively the people from THIS forum are quick to either claim that it should be nerfed (and actively state that they will nerf it whenever they see it happening), posit highly unlikely situations, or challenge "denners" to thunderdome quit then complain about how the abilities were used.

I could go on to show how the "denners" are pretty much represented by the guy who knows how to play chess in the strip but I'm sure that it would fall upon deaf ears.

In either case, how is this a topic for discussion and not just another "Lol dem denners" threads?

:teehee:

Except for the virtually uncountable times the Denners utterly bungled even the simplest of mechanics.  More like "lol queens teleport anywhere on the board every turn, pawns are useless!" than "the guy who knows how to play chess".

Don't make me laugh. You guys aren't either of the people in that comic your level of failure has no analog in chess.

Theorycraft works and it will let you play better. That's why people do it, stop whining. Optimization is just that choosing the optimal course when given a choice. The truth is that everyone is an Optimizer some people just suck at it. You can tell who that is by how much they whine on the internet.

Now theorycraft and optimization hard and no one masters it overnight. Thinking is apparently hard for some people. Instead of becoming better players they get it in their head that it's everyone else who's the problem. So instead of getting better they start weaving baskets and whining about "munchkins".

To be honest I blame the DMs for this. Too many of them are willing to coddle basketweavers and they've become entitled. When you try to MTP your way past an encounter you are not being clever. What you are doing is telling the DM "waaaaaah D&D is too hard I want to play pretend instead". The answer to that should be always be no the fact that this is in dispute is disgraceful.
