This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The RPGPundit's Own Forum Rules
This part of the site is controlled by the RPGPundit. This is where he discusses topics that he finds interesting. You may post here, but understand that there are limits. The RPGPundit can shut down any thread, topic of discussion, or user in a thread at his pleasure. This part of the site is essentially his house, so keep that in mind. Note that this is the only part of the site where political discussion is permitted, but is regulated by the RPGPundit.

Evil Hat Games gets GamerGate card game pulled from OBS with boycott threat

For those that haven't heard, James "Grim" Desborough published a GamerGate card game, which went up on various OneBookShelf sites (e.g. RPGNow and DriveThruRPG) on December 4th.

Very shortly after it was uploaded, the guys at Evil Hat Games started threatening to pull their products from OBS unless the GamerGate card game was dropped.

Rather saddeningly, the game went down almost immediately. While Grim eventually put it up for sale elsewhere, it's still upsetting that this happened at all. Somewhat hopefully, the line from OBS is that internal discussion is still going on over this. They seem to be fairly open to input as well.

Now, I'll be the first to admit that I think that Grim courts controversy, often in a manner that could charitably described as lacking nuance. That said, I find it to be beyond disgusting that Evil Hat Games thinks that they can try to coerce a vendor into removing products that they personally don't like (using threats of economic harm via pulling their products).

Apparently they're also fine that people can buy books such as Fuck for Satan, Choice and Blood (which can be summed up as "d20 Modern: Abortion"), and the infamous Carcosa, but a card game that leans in support of GamerGate? That's apparently a bridge too far.
"...player narration and DM fiat fall apart whenever there's anything less than an incredibly high level of trust for the DM. The general trend of D&D's design up through the end of 4e is to erase dependence on player-DM trust as much as possible, not to create antagonism, but to insulate both sides from it when it appears." - Brandes Stoddard

Welcome to social justice warriors and how they do things.  They already got Target and Kmart to pull out Grand Theft Auto 5 in Australia.  People say that social justice warriors don't want take away our games.  Bull-fucking-shit.

One Horse Town

Publishers are free to lobby venues that carry their stock (be it virtual or otherwise) although i'll note it's normally the other way around. I don't see that as blackmail. In the case of Evilhat here, it looks like a gamble that paid off. His business if worth more to OBS than Desboroughs.

In other news, as usual for Grim, the game looks awfully ill-conceived.

Perhaps he should do a Rosemary & Thyme RPG and see how that goes down.

Blah blah blach censorship blah social justice warrior bogeyman blah blah blah.

Let's be honest: was anyone actually looking for this game in the first place?

This just in: Acting out for negative attention sometimes has negative consequences! Who knew?!

Who's to say that they won't do it again to get a competing product removed?

That is a good question and I can see it happening.  This is really a slippery slope that leaves room for a lot of abuse.  I had always said that if social justice warriors could remove games they don't like they would.  Now that they know they can who is going to be next.  Arrows of India?  Red and Pleasant Land?

Think about it?  They are not afraid to lie about ZakS and RPGPundit.  I would safely guess they will make a attack on their books with these threats at some point because the distributor had proven that he/she has no spine.

You can stop being a idiot now, or are you going to wait till they remove a book you actually like till you grow a brain?  Right now they just went for a soft target, but eventually they will go after their real targets.

Especially since it's already been proven to work for Evil Hat.

According to Steve Wieck of OBS, they are taking their time to think this one through. So, we'll see what their final decision is.

Lets hope for everyone's sake that Steve Wieck makes the smart decision here.  As in he tells Evil Hat to fuck off.  If Steve Wieck breaks than Evil Hat and all the other social justice dominated rpg companies are going to push him around till their is nothing left other than their games.

I find plenty of objectionable material on OBS; that's why I don't buy it.

EDIT: Where are you guys seeing this conversation take place? Twitter? Google+?
At least, I don't see any forums on OBS...?

I'm betting Twitter.  That said, nice job on the bullying tactics, Evil Hat, way to make me appreciate the fact that I don't buy your shit.
