This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.
The RPGPundit's Own Forum Rules
This part of the site is controlled by the RPGPundit. This is where he discusses topics that he finds interesting. You may post here, but understand that there are limits. The RPGPundit can shut down any thread, topic of discussion, or user in a thread at his pleasure. This part of the site is essentially his house, so keep that in mind. Note that this is the only part of the site where political discussion is permitted, but is regulated by the RPGPundit.

It might be nice if that's how news worked but that's just not the case.

That's exactly how news works.

I haven't read a major newspaper in years, but back when dinos roamed the earth, newspapers had different sections - News, Sports, Entertainment, Opinion, Business, etc. I do read the local freebies. Couldn't imagine paying for a newspaper anymore.

Unfortunately, the idiot box and the 24hr cable news have muddled everything into 30 minutes of Infotainment with beer and diaper commercials. Of course, news requires fact gatherers and fact checkers which is expensive, whereas opinion only requires someone to run their mouth, leading the worst aspects of Infotainment to greater partisan extremes...for profit.

But I do like DeFranco. Anybody who opens his show by calling his viewers "my beautiful bastards" has my nod. And he does separate reported facts from his opinion which is a notable difference from most of his YT competitors.

It's fun to watch the dumbasses on the right act just as hypocritical as the dumbasses on the left. The Colin Kaepernick situation, for example, has been a great source of lols for me.

Very true.  There is no shortage of partisan extremist blindness.

I love how the Kaepernick debacle led to Papa John's Pizza getting pissed at the NFL. Now that's the law of unintended consequences in action!

I think we're talking about two different (but related) things here. You're looking at the traditional usage of "news" as it relates to the profession of collecting information and getting it out to the public in one form or another, but I'm referring to the broader definition of spreading that information to people who likely haven't heard it yet.

In any case, as you yourself said a lot of the news isn't so professional these days. I turn on Fox and hear all about how the Trump dossier was a fake bought by the Clinton campaign collaborating with the Russians. Flipping over to CNN, I hear about how most of the information in that very same dossier is supposedly true and was corroborated by intelligence sources. Both sides use talking heads, politicians, and their own anchors to push their stories, but there's no way in hell they can both be telling the truth. It's all about entertainment and stirring up controversy to nab viewers. Yet this is what so much of professional news has devolved to these days because the ratings are everything.

I had posted this in the Marvel Comics something something thread, but I think it applies here because it's about the same YouTube channel.

Incidentally, in the video, it's clear that he's skimming through the comic for politically objectionable content without actually even bothering to read it. For example, at 4:30 or so, he goes off about how this woman with an apron just walks out of a door, implying that she hasn't been established before. But that's idiotic. This is the point in the story where it's revealing her superhero identity. She was established in issue #1 as the superhero sorceress The Gates in the 1960s, and this is the point where is is revealed that her secret identity is Marla - the old woman introduced in #2 who has been advising Storm in the present.

If he were to go off on how this reveal was clumsy or whatever, then I could give him some credit. But no, he attacks it as the character not being established even though she is clearly named Marla and uses The Gates' superpowers in that scene.
Regarding the video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYyy99Csia8

So not only are people basing their opinions of comics on watching YouTube videos, but they're basing it on YouTube videos where the reviewer hasn't even fucking read the whole comic - just skimmed through it without actually following the story.

Pundit, I generally look forward to your gaming reviews, because despite some of your wacky opinions, you seem conscientious as a reviewer.

Even if someone is just going to give a negative review - I'd say especially if someone is going to give a negative review - they should give a fair shot and actually read through it. It's not like Black Panther & The Crew is that long. It's six standard comic books. And if someone is going to do a review without having read the comic, then at least be up front and say "I haven't really read this comic because I was too disgusted" (or whatever).

Years ago I wrote a handful of reviews for RPG.net. One in particular was for a game called Iron Claws. I had started a new campaign and played two sessions before writing my review which was mainly about the game's needlessly complicated and inconsistent mechanics. In the course of my review, I made a rules mistake [I wasn't wrong, the rulebook was unclear]

The author of the game took this one mistake as evidence that I had "never played the game" and, thus, everything I said about the game was wrong and my review should be ignored.

So I've been on the receiving end of this tactic myself.

Sorry if you were unfairly judged, but that doesn't mean that no reviewer should ever be judged for not going through the material.

In this case, it is possible that the reviewer read the comic all the way through, and simply didn't realize that the old woman Marla in the present was the same as the woman in the 1970s who was named Marla. But it is still a dumb oversight, given that he specifically attacks the comic for bringing in an unestablished character. As the reviewer puts it -

Quote
There's a bunch of people just popping out of nowhere. He gets in this really poorly choreographed fight, where - oh, what irony - the civil rights leader ended up shooting the gangster.

So then this woman just pops out of a frickin random door with a frickin apron. She goes "You know,  I never did trust that man. Frank thought he could dismantle the empire with the empire's tools. By the end, he didn't care where those tools came from. But Frank was wrong, you know." "I know, Marla. I do."

You're probably assuming this character has been established in some way, since why is she wearing an apron and coming out coincidentally of the window that they just landed by when ... no, no, no, no, no... None of that matters.

Present-day Marla is an old woman introduced in #2 who has always appeared in an apron, as the proprietor of the restaurant Londell's. She and the victim Ezra are the characters with the most lines and screen time than anyone except the main crew. The Gates is a superhero sorceress introduced in #1 as part of Ezra's crew, and appeared in most of the flashback scenes.

Even if he doesn't recognize that this is her secret identity reveal - he could have realized *either* that she is The Gates (because she looks similar, is a friend of Ezra, and uses her powers) *or* she is Marla (because she is referred to by name and in an apron). But it's pretty clear that she is both.

While its not quite the same, I'm reminded of an early review of The Terminator where a critic referred to Arnold's acting as "wooden, like he was playing a machine or something". :D
