This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.
The RPGPundit's Own Forum Rules
This part of the site is controlled by the RPGPundit. This is where he discusses topics that he finds interesting. You may post here, but understand that there are limits. The RPGPundit can shut down any thread, topic of discussion, or user in a thread at his pleasure. This part of the site is essentially his house, so keep that in mind. Note that this is the only part of the site where political discussion is permitted, but is regulated by the RPGPundit.

Cloud, Smart Home, IoT a woke vector of attack

I've long said that all of those were a bad idea, originally due to safety concerns (which still are valid) but now we need to add the woke cult as a threat to you.

Here is why this forum tends to be so stupid. Many people here think Joe Biden is "The Left", when he is actually Far Right and every US republican is just an idiot.

That's why everything I run is self-hosted.  Not because I think they'll shut me down one day for random racism, but because having your stuff be dependent upon an account with a third-party means that if they go down/get hacked/etc, all your stuff turns into paperweights.  Also, having your devices be beholden to a company, and relaying all of their data to that company, is just plain dumb.  So no thanks.

Besides the government extending (BS based) court orders to spy on you.

Yes, those were all my original concerns, which are all still valid, but now you need to add someone claiming your dorbell did a racismism and you getting fucked in the ass.

I wouldn't trust the government to handle that stuff, why would I trust a corporation? Much less in the age of woke?

Here's the Medium article that he's reading out.

Quote
This incident has led me to question my relationship with Amazon. After nearly a decade of loyalty, I’ve been given a harsh reminder that a misunderstanding can lead to such drastic measures. It seems more reasonable to handle such issues in a more compartmentalized way, rather than a blanket shutdown of all services.

Due to this experience, I am seriously considering discontinuing my use of Amazon Echo devices and will caution others about this incident.

Yeah, I can't understand why anyone would trust their whole home operation to active service of a single corporation. That's regardless of wokeness or not.

How does anyone interpret “Excuse me, can I help you?” as racist?

By willfully lying?

Just about every -ist/ism has been reduced to double-plus-ungood feel. Therefore, whenever some wanker feels ungood the source must be wankist/wankism.

On the technology side, the cloud is just someone else computer. Why anyone would voluntarily trust in someone else's computer is beyond me. This is the price of not being arsed to get up to flip the light switch or set up a locally hosted solution. Saving seconds of effort now is apparently worth days of misery later.

This is dystopic as fuck, leaving aside the fact that someone would trust a corporation with control over their home, the foremost bastion of privacy in one's existence, is incredible to me but also the fact that they can literally do something like this without consequence, isn't legal action a possibility?

I can't understand how anyone would be dumb enough to turn over the basic functioning of their home to technology.

More Dystopian fuckery, Amazon cancelled the account of the Youtuber that broke the news.

Fucking hell, how the fuck can they get away with this kind of stuff? I guess the guy signed a contract or something but there must be some limitation to even that.
