This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Rules question: warn the players before a GnomeMurdered check?
« on: February 28, 2011, 05:21:16 PM »
I'm about to start running a GnomeMurdered campaign, and I have a rules question. When my players want to take an action that will require a GnomeMurdered check, should I tell them it will require a check and give them a choice of whether or not to take the action? Or should I just nod and roll the dice?

Just nod and roll?!? omigod, man, that would be heart-less.

When we played the game, *all* of us knew what the roll meant and I would always ask first if they were sure. It the most merciful thing you can do. ;)

Its not just the most merciful thing, its the most menacing thing.  The second you say "that would require a gnomemurder check", you create a certain level of suspense.

So yes, barring some particular circumstances, I would say you should almost always inform people beforehand.

Thanks for the advice! I was thinking the gnomes would strike without warning, like in real life, but I guess this comes back to the idea that "it is not realism but effective emulation that a game must seek to obtain", as it says on page 6 of the GnomeMurdered core book.
