This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Has any PC of yours ever pulled a Corwin?

Quote from: Lady Vivamus;336136Not if Random's doing the shifting... remember that first trip to Amber? The car transforms a number of times during that. If someone were to bring something like a laptop into Amber, they might go the long way and try to pull the same trick, having it shift along the way to be something that will work.

Well, it didn't end up changing into a horse, or even a carriage; it just stopped working, before they got to Arden.

While something of a cop-out, some people (admittedly myself included, for the most part) tend to subscribe to this or something like it.  As both players and GMs, our nightmares include someone bringing a nuclear device  into Amber, hiding it Amber castle, invite the family to some big party and... (well, of course their character is sick that day and stays behind in shadow :P)

As a matter of fact, one of my players did exactly that.
It was in a Throne War, though; I probably wouldn't have allowed that sort of thing in a real game.
They also had to have conjuring AND advanced Pattern to make it happen.

I had this feeling that Amber, being the paramount of Order and of constance would never suffer any change in its "game rules". For me Corwin's powder has only been possible because of the black road and the mark on the Pattern. It ceased working when Oberon repaired it. Yes, I don't consider Merlin's series to be canon. I could say that Oberon graved in stone the "new rules" including Corwin's powder but I simply did not like the likely consequence : Benedict ordering the construction of bunkers and machine guns to defend the castle...

So as Amber could accept that the exceptional Princes bring some minor things from Shadow to enjoy themselves, it would not allow anything that would change its own atmosphere. Remember that Amber and the Pattern are said to be a song and a poem as well as a drawing, both set in stone and fighting against everchanging chaos.

I maintain that the holder of the jewel of judgement can edit their current shadow , including Amber, the Courts or the Primal pattern to modify its properties, magical , technological what have you. Defensively removing the threat of gunpower from Amber is an obvious move. I would imagine that any King of Amber would want to give his guys an edge and personally I see them modifying the chemistry of Amber gunpowder, now that such as thing has been found, every few months such that anyone using last years ammo would be out of luck.
Its a bit odd to say all things exist in Shadow but Amber has to be in a constant state of 16th century Italy.

You could argue that its less about "science" and more about "artists' vision". I could see Corwin's Fin-de-ciecle Parisian Pattern being one where guns would work, but lasers would not. Maybe even one where hot air balloons would work, but airplanes would not.

Not because of "scientific laws", but because the JoJ made the "rules" based on Corwin's "artistic vision".
