This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Looking for Players for a Campaign via Discord/Roll20
« on: June 06, 2018, 08:09:39 PM »
I've tried reddit with out much success..so I thought I'd try here..

I've GM'd everything from AD&D, Star Frontiers, Mech Warrior, Gurps, Supers, Rifts, through to Amber. I'm trying to assemble a group of players (between 4 and 6) interested in an Amber Campaign either a re-run of Keep of the Thirteenth Hour or another concurrent run of my AiRP campaign. I'm happy to take novices to the Amber System but not novice Roleplayers. Knowldege of the System or Amber is not required.

I use a set of rules built from the net book of Amber derived from the first edition rules. There is a full rule set (both online and downloadable PDF) and basic intro's to both campaigns on my website http://www.azer.co.uk/amber/amber.html

My preference is Thursday evenings (8pm->10:30pm BST/GMT) but as I've not had any success I'm willing to switch to either a Friday or Sunday Evening (7pm->10pm). However with either Friday or Sunday it will not be every week and may be subject to late cancellation.

Update: I have also considered running this as a PBP campaign. Please check the latest Reddit Thread for details

Welcome to the boards! Your website looks awesome; I looked at it some based on your posts on the ADRP Discussion board, but I like what I see there and based on your list of RPGs that you've run it sounds like we have similar interests in gaming.

I have no experience with Discord or Roll20 and have never played online in that way, but good luck with the campaign. (I don't think my computer has a camera or microphone anything like that, so my guess is that I can't interface with an online game in that way.)

Desktop generally don't have either. A reasonable headset, like the Jabra Voice 550 is approx £50 (probably cheaper in the US in dollars) is all you need for Discord. Camera's are not necessary. Discord is considerably better than Skype and works well in voice mode if you have limited Internet Bandwidth. I run another group on a Tuesday and it works pretty well. Roll20 is useful for sharing the occasional map but images can just be dropped onto the Discord client or I put them up on my website and tell people to go look at them as appropriate but that doesn't work for dynamic situations.

It would appear that the Reddit post https://www.reddit.com/r/lfgmisc/com...ingdiscordrep/ has been auto archived and we cant communicate via that anymore.
To answer your question, i am available mostly on Thursdays but am willing to try other days of the week if possible. To this date i have mostly played with small 4 people parties so a 6 person one will be interesting but i think it will be sameish.

Not obsolete as I 've yet to actually get sufficient people available on one night to be able to set up a game.. I need to resurrect the reddit rpg/misc thread as they archived my previous one preventing any further replies.

I wanted to ask how the current state of the possible game is, the last update in the reddit thread was 5 months ago;/

Currently i have gotte na job(6 months ago actually, am fairly happy) so i have way less time. I would still like to take part but maybe in the play by post part. Anyway, still interested.

Pretty much the same state it's been in for the last 4 years.. can't get enough players to make it worthwhile running, and that's via any medium. I've been considering reposting on reddit as the previous thread has been archived. From my perspective my only change in lockdown is that I login from home in the morning as opposed to commuting 45 minutes into the office..

I would be interested in playing by post or something similar but wouldn't be able to commit to a regular day and time. Online might support a few methods of play if GM and people are willing. So a scheduled meeting time when a large group of players are together, play by post when a PC is doing solo stuff, small voice or video meeting for two-three PCs talking, add GM for action, etc.

Larson, i thought about it and i wanted to ask if a bifurcation of the session would be a possibility? U would create two groups that start indipendantly of each other, with diffrent meeting times. We could later come together or interact individually via posts between each other. This way we could do something about the problem of fixed timetables.

Im not sure if this would mean u would need to do more work as a GM ofc.

Both of my campaigns are setup with "New" Amber players in mind, which means none of the starting characters known anything (or very little) about Amber, Shadow, or much else. No starting character has any Pattern (or Logrus) ability and therefore has no means of crossing Shadow (even if they knew what it was). Both starting scenarios therefore gather all the characters into one place, where the "truth" gets revealed.. how they accept that truth depends on exactly their chosen history and parentage. Once they have the ability to traverse Shadow (which they actually have to learn how to do, which leads to certain events, especially in the AiRP campaign) having the party split into different shadows at different time rates is something I expect to happen and in some cases is actually necessary to get things done. So this element is no more work than I would normally expect to have to do.. it's one reason why PBP (or forum) would work equally as well as online, and if I have players spread across the globe in different timezones would work better, since they could post their actions and interactions at their own convenience. The characters interacting with one another is actually a significant element of the AiRP campaign (given the setup) and may require little input on my part as GM. It's one of the problems I had with the last group I ran it with.  most of them acted as they would in a stereotypical D&D campaign where because "joe was a dwarf fighter" that was all they needed to know about joe, which doesn't work for "joe" as an Amber character with a history they actually know nothing about.
I would also note in relation to my AiRP campaign, there are ways of characters starting with significant knowledge about Amber and Shadow and having the means to traverse them in a limited manner, but I'm not saying exactly how. One of my previous PCs (who as a player knew nothing about Amber) had this ability as does one of the NPCs. This is not as true in the Rodian War campaign..

I've put up a new thread on reddit/lfg_misc..
