This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

How well known is amber in the multiverse?

In some shadows, its clear that people know that other shadows exist, and that Amber exists, and even who is in it.

In others, it appears that the Amberites are the mythical figures or deities of the land.

But in many others, like Earth, there doesn't seem to be any notion of Amber's existence.

Is there some reason for this? Generally I have run it that the closer a shadow is to Amber, the more likely that Amber is known, and shadowwalking is known of (since there will be more and more shadow paths that even non-amberites can walk through).

But do you like it in your campaign for most significant places to be ones where Amber is known of, or are most places ignorant of the true nature of reality?

It depends on the local technology, nearness to Amber, and Amberite actions.

If there is a cross-shadow technology (such as magic, dimensional travel, hyperspace, whatever) that allows travel to nearby shadows, then Amber might easily be known or at least theorized.

If someone has told them about Amber, then clearly yes.

If they're close enough that you can get to and from the place via shadow paths, then clearly yes.

I'd base it completely on what seemed like the most fun now. If the people they meet knowing who they are seems like it would be more interesting than the alternative, I'll do it.

Edit: this assumes the Shadow isn't one already known to the group or one I've created in advance. If I create it ,that will be part of the creation process (although it'll still depend on what seems more fun).

This is generally how I do it as well.

The other places automatically aware of Amber are the Courts, Rebma, and Tir-na Nog'th. Beyond that, only a few elite individuals may be aware of Amber. (For example, if Delwin and Sand are "out there" somewhere, clearly they are aware of Amber even if they are not up to date on events transpiring there.)

I also assume that some individuals in the Golden Circle are aware of Amber, although many trade with Amber not really knowing where it can be found. (Much like an American trading goods with someone in Europe without actually visiting there -- as long as there is a means of transportation and goods come and go on schedule, I would assume that Europe must be out there somewhere.)

Fin: Just curious, how do they keep the secret?

Remember, the Golden Circle is a treaty organization.  Treaties include regulations that all kinds of people have interests in... merchants, tax collectors, et multiple cetera.

Amber cast shadows, the royals of elders cast shadows.  I'd say that the Amber and royals known in legends are knowledge of those shadows, or that the legends themselves are the shadows.

just like the story of Corwin the Sorcerer King was known in Lorraine, the actuality of, or just legend of, is a shadow of the real Corwin's time in Avalon.
