This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

[AMBER] Don't leave me in the dark...
« on: March 20, 2020, 10:04:59 AM »
A question that is not directly related to the game, but to its derivatives.

I own the two books written by Erick Wujcik. But I'm French, I also own the books in French and deplore the poor translation that has been made from the sourcebooks. At best it seems to me that notions are missing, at worst there are inventions. And Google Trad doesn't help me much neither.

So, you English speakers could help me figure what is the exact meaning of the sentence quoted from the Hand of Oberon, while Corwin in disguise is talking to Dworkin in his lair.

«* What would another generation have been like?*»

Does it mean :
1. How would the new generation (Merlin, Martin) have reacted?
2.  What might a new generation look like? (If the Pattern was redrawn and all created all over again.

It may seems trivial but the sense of the sentence implies a different understanding of the paragraph and what follows.

Thanks.

Are you quoting from the original books or the Amber RPG book written by Eric?
If it's the latter then in what section? In my Phage Press edition (4th run 1999) the only section that comes close is in the description of Dworkin - Embodiment of the Pattern (700 point version).
"Then 'I was wrong', he said. 'Such a simple matter, too.. My blood, with which i drew it, could deface it. But it took me ages to realize that the blood of my blood could also do this thing. you could use, you could also change it - yea, unto the third generation".
Is this the quote you are referring to?

I don't have the book with me but if I remember correctly Corwin is at the damaged Primal Pattern when he has this thought and is thinking about his brothers and sisters fighting and feuding with each other for so long and to the point where one of them would destroy the Pattern. A 'cutting off the nose to spite the face' kind of thing and he wonders if the next generation will be as proud and combative with each other.

It fits in with how, a few scenes later, Corwin meets Martin and tries to dissuade him from seeing revenge on Brand.

First quote from Introduction, page 7 in Erick.s book, and around page 100 in the original book The Hand of Oberon.

Got it.. Its actually really easy. Corwin is effectively discussing the achievements of the Generations of the family what they did/didn't do what they caused to happen, etc. Since in the original book, "Hand of Oberon", Corwin is unaware of Merlin and only knows of Martin, Random's Son, he's just speculating as to what any children, assuming that any of his generation have any, could/would do/achieve.
Most Amber campaigns have the Player Characters as the Children of Corwin's generation, i.e Oberons Grand Children. What happens and what they, the PCs as Oberon's grandchildren is then down to both them and what the GM has in the way of plot(s).

Prior to this quote, they are talking about a clean slate, destroying and re-writing the Pattern.

Quote from: Zelazny
"If we succeed in making a fresh start, might not these events simply repeat themselves?"
"I do not know. But what choice have we other than failure and a return to chaos?"
"What will become of them if we try for a new beginning?"
He was silent for a long while. Then he shrugged. "I cannot tell."
"What would another generation have been like?"
He chuckled."How can such a question be answered? I have no idea."

3. Corwin is referring to what would be the behavior of a hypothetical next generation.
