This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

A Question of Caine
« on: March 15, 2010, 11:48:42 AM »
In re-reading the canon recently, I was struck by an incongruity. Perhaps someone can help clear it?

Caine dies in "Sign of the Unicorn"; (by whom? I thought Brand slit his throat.)
Brand dies in "Courts of Chaos" falling into the abyss with Deirdre.
Caine dies in "Trumps of Doom" (during the reign of King Random which chronological follows the death of Brand in the PatternFall War and the designation of Random as King by the Unicorn.)
Luke (Rinaldo) admits to killing Caine in the Merlin series, as Caine is who killed his father Brand. (I thought he fell into the Abyss)

I am sorry, but there is some sort of logical inconsistency here. Am I wrong or am I not picking up something? Did I miss an appearance of Caine during the PatternFall wars? Does Caine somehow rematerialize and knock Brand into the Abyss? Are there two Caines. Does K. E. Wagner's Kane show up?

Duh! Can anyone shed some light on this. (I believe in the illogic of suspension of disbelief.)

Thank you

Yeah you missed a fair bit :)

In Sign of the Unicorn Caine fakes his own death by finding a double in shadow whose body he uses. This enables Caine to investigate activities from the background possibly expoiting the use of Trumps as spying devices which he had been playing with previously.

When Brand is shot on the edge of the Abyss its Caine that does it (using silver arrows). He reveals about how he faked his death and what he's been upto.

Luke/Rinaldo kills Caine with a bomb in Trumps of Doom as revenge for Caine shooting Brand.

Generally Caine's sneaky reputation comes from these actions and a lot of folks find Lukes revenge and the subsequent death of Caine more than a little weak and it spawns off a whole view that Caine has perhaps faked his death again and is undercover once more (which I find equally weak :) )

Thank you,
I must have dozed off and picked up at a different place in CoC.
At least I will no longer wonder that the editors slipped up and let such an inconsistency through.
Again thank you

Was Caine's cause of death explained?

For some reason, I seem to remember it was a sniper rifle, with the "mystery sniper" taking a 2nd shot later at Bleys.

From what I remember you are correct.  Caine was killed by Luke using a rifle.  At one point Merlin finds bullets in Luke's hotel room with the pink powder needed for combustion in Amber.
I thought the bomb was tossed down at Caine's funeral.

Yes, now everyone seems to have their facts straight.

Anyways, yes, Caine's first faked-death has led to at least 40000 Amber Campaigns set after the second series showing Caine having actually faked his death twice, because he's that awesome.

Not that I can criticize that too heavily, I did that myself on at least three or four campaigns in my younger days.
