This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

This is one of the most popular OSR products on drivethru. Twenty dollars for basically the B/X rules with apparently a nice layout, although what I see of the art in the preview doesn't really do it for me.

The reviews are all 5-star. People seem to be going for the production values.

I don't get it. I can get Rules Cyclopedia (pdf) for 10 dollars, or B/X Basic + Expert for the same. Why would I pay these guys twice as much?

They want another 10 dollars for a 4-panel GM screen.

It's B/X edited for clarity and ease of use. That's it. I backed the Kickstarter and have the B/X Essentials in print already, and used it mostly as a reference during games I was running. For that purpose, it's extremely useful. But it sucks all the flavor out, and for that reason it may not be useful to you.

Basically, if you already play B/X and want a table reference, get it. If you want to play B/X and don't already have the original books, you'll be missing out on the old school flavor.
It takes considerable knowledge just to realize the extent of your own ignorance.

It terse, gets to the point as well as being well-written. I have the RC and the original and it much easier to find things with Old School Essentials.

It also appeals to me as a labor of love for BX. It's useful, and clearly had a lot of heart and soul poured in. Sometimes it's just nice to have a work that someone really loved making, you know?
