Title: Review: Death Frost Doom 10th Anniversary Edition
Post by: SeanWhittaker on March 31, 2021, 02:36:51 PM
I was perusing Books-A-Million while waiting for my Covid vaccine shot, and stumbled across a treasure trove of Lamentations of the Flame Princess material.  Amongst those items, a copy of Death Frost Doom, the 10th Anniversary Edition.  I'd heard great things, so I grabbed it.

Dear lord, what a find.

First, let me say that I'm in love with the format of the book.  Jet black cover (felt?  velvet?  velveteen?).  Blue stamp text and sigil on the front.  An interior font that is easy on the eyes.  Interior maps on the front flap, art on the back flap.  65 pages in length with not a single ounce of fat.

Second, it's maybe the greatest intro module ever written.  This adventure will terrorize your players, while at the same time make them realize they are truly playing something special.

I'm going to stop numbering my points and just blurt out my praise from here-on out...

This edition was written by James Edward Raggi IV and Zak S(mith, abbath, or just ., take your pick).  I've purchased a couple of items by Mr. Smith (Maze of the Blue Medusa, Red and Pleasant Land, Frostbitten and Mutilated, Vornheim, on reflection maybe all of his items) and quite a bit of Lamentation of the Flame Princess product, and have been happy with all of it, but this one is something special.  Illustrations Cartography, and Desigh are by Jez Gordon.  There is some interior art from the original printing by Laura Jalo (as well as the Dead Sign on the front and interior.

After a few words on the new edition by James and Zak, the adventure starts:  "There is a mountain that no-one climbs.  It dominates the landscape like fear and the memories of what once lived there.  But memory recedes and rumor breeds - and the rumor is a rumor of gold."  The players encounter a very interesting NPC (as well as some interesting approaches in how to run him/her), then set up the mountain to the peak, where they will face certain doom.  Or maybe just an enjoyable stroll and wander through the many interestingly carved tombstones.  And I mean many.  WAY more than you would expect at a mountain peak.

I'm not going to spoil any of the adventure.  I'll just say that this thing plays out like the best of Sam Raimi's movies.  Expect your players to stand in awe, horror, and amazement at what they have just wrought.  Assuming they make it through to the end.

Almost forgot.  There are also some wonderful music suggestions to key up during the game.  Follow their advise.  It is worth it.

It can still be purchased at the Books-A-Million website.  I can't recommend the game highly enough.  That's why this is my first review.

Given how it's supposed to end... is it really a good intro module?
