PFRPG: Bizantium and the Northern Islands
everloss:
The ice shelf stuff sounds interesting. I like the sound of those reaver-types, although their supermagic ships sound silly. From the very brief description you gave, they seem to rival the black ships of the Western Empire, and those are already stupidly powerful. Why haven't these people taken over the world's oceans? Why are they hiding in the far north? Why has no one else heard of them until now? Are they limited to a cold climate?
Shawn Merrow:
The Iceborn do stick to the Northern part of the world. They invade in cycles. When the population reaches a certain point they start looking South to raid the lands of the North. If they are defeated they go home till the cycle starts again.

I like that.
Contrary to my overt negativity, I still have interest in Palladium Fantasy, and am happy new books are slowly coming out. I am also always happy when a Palladium thread pops up.
Thank you for writing the review, and please post more in the future

I recently flipped through this one at a friend's place.
It looks way cool.
My friend gave me copies of the main book, High Seas, and Old Ones. All first edition, which he knows I prefer to the more Rifts-like second edition.
Bizantium looks so good I have considered buying a copy and converting it to first edition rules. That's not really hard.
I always thought the kingdom name was so close to Byzantium that Simbieda intended it to partly resemble the East Roman/Byzantine Empire. But it is far north, has ships that don't look Byzantine, and includes various English and Norse type elements.
So what it looks like to me in rough historical terms is a bunch of Norse and Anglo-Saxon people colonized by Byzantines. Like a reversal of Varangians going to the East Roman Empire.
That is fun. And the newer book seems to support this reading.

I know this is a necro'd thread but I must say that it does my heart good to see people interested in and playing Palladium Fantasy. Even if it is on a thread that's several years old. I haven't played it since high school but I loved it and the setting so much.
