This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Of all the eight independent stores we have in town, only one has a trove of old material. It's the most recently established. The trove won't last long.

I think (thanks to E-Bay?) the days of dusty old Bonnie Brae style used bins are over.
Employment Counselor: So what do you like to do outside of work?
Oblivious Gamer: I like to play games: wargames, role-playing games.
EC: My cousin killed himself because of role-playing games.
OG: Jesus, what was he playing? Rifts?

Which is too bad, really, because it's about the only thing the LGS has to offer me over the internet.

No, I don't know that one.
The newest store in town is The King in Yellow. It has a real "folks' basement circa 1978" feel to it. The owner bought a pretty good collection of some old stuff. Wilderlands, Rolemaster, Runequest--that sort of stuff. It's in the middle of Colo Spgs. They have a Facebook page.

Since our last breakdown of game stores in Col Spgs, one closed, one moved, and three opened. There're eight that have table space and an atmosphere conducive to playing. It's crazy, man. How long can it last?

Quote from: The Butcher;438961SBA is a good SF toolkit, if you can buy into FATE 3.0 levels of abstraction (which I'm not 100% sure I can, need more actual play experience).

I find the huge hardback a con. There seems to be a "second edition" in the works which apparently splits the game into a Player's Guide and Story Teller's Guide, with some extra material thrown in. Sounds like a great idea to me!

It also deserves more support from C7, which has a bunch of supplements available for pre-order, and only Mindjammer out.

I looked at he links for the smaller books, I think I prefer the big HC, really. Players need to read about 10 pages to play, maybe 30 if they really want to get a grip on the  system. Half of my crew wont do either, but will have to have it all spelled out for them during play.  Simply put, they don't need any books.

As far as the big hardback being some kind of con, I have to disagree. I don't buy adventures. EVER. I don't want a setting, I can do that myself. As a matter of fact, i insist on it.  The big hardcover gives me every thing I need from ships to super weapons to planet generators. I don't need to buy a single supplement.

IMO, an example of a con would be something like 4e Dark Sun which requires that you buy a couple more books beyond the core rules and the setting books to use fully. I think you need the campaign guide, the creature collection, the three core books, the psionic power book and one of the other PHB's to hit the full range of options; that's like seven fucking books*. A bit excessive, imo. I'm much happier with one book that has everything- especially given that you can pick up the SBA book used on amazon for 30$.

*I have no issue with 4e or WoTC, for the most part, and i don't fault them for trying to make a buck; they just can't have anymore of my bucks.  I wont be adding to my stack of 4e stuff until 5e comes out and I can pick stuff up used and cheap.

Quote from: Daedalus;438971I have browsed through SBA and I want to like it, but I cannot.

My biggest problem is FATE which is too rules light/rules barely for me.  I like games with more traditional rule sets where the creation is more clear and isn't just "pick what you want"

I have browsed through it twice but it using the FATE system is and always will prevent me from buying it

FATE is only "rules lite" in its simplest fundamental.  But when you incorporate the stunts as used in Starblazer, and the modular application of the basic rules to things like starships, empires, organizations, etc, the rules are actually quite complete.  They're not GURPS or something, but I've never had trouble finding an actual RULE for doing something in Starblazer if I wanted to have a rule.

Your review clued me into this game, by the way. That's twice you've sold me on something. Icons (which I have now used on several occasions) being the first time.

On another note, I really appreciate this and other mini-reviews.  I like them for the site, and would like to encourage others to post them.

So I don't want it to in any way be seen as a sign of disapproval, but I'm moving the mini-reviews into the Reviews subforum, which is where the moderation staff feels that they belong.  I hope that people will continue to write minireviews for that forum and that discussion about them will continue there.
