Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). Very impressive customer service. : )

"Lowell Was Right" sounds like an amazing concept, well implemented. Had I more free time, I'd be a paying customer already.

(Which is why I'm not downloading it for free — I have NO free time. Plus, you really deserve money for this, so…)

Also, I AM doing a Steampunk setting (for my Storm Knights campaign), and I don't want to tempt my brain with a whole lot of neat ideas I'd want to steal.

Again, this sounds brilliant; a very ambitious concept carried out very well. When my schedule opens up I'll definitely be buying it.

Cheers!

Thank you very much, Daddy Warpig! I'm glad it tickled your curiosity bump! I like to think of it as Hard SF as if written in the 1880s. Have fun with your Storm Nights campaign! :D

He did indeed send me it. What I've read so far is very nice, I've just been reading the background info rather than any mechanics. It really helped me understand early pulp SF (1910s-1930s), REH/Conan swords & sorcery, and modernist horror (William Hope Hodgson, HP Lovecraft) better, seeing how they were using real science concepts from the 1880s.

flyingmice

That is what drew me to the concept, S'mon! The more pulp SF and S&S/S&P stuff I read, the more I noticed the authors had a synoptic vision of what the world, and the solar system, were like. At first I had thought these were singular authorial fantasies, but there were too many commonalities, so they must have had a shared source.

The fact that my father's father was a school teacher born near the end of the 19th century, and that my father remembered a lot of what his father had taught him - he himself was an engineer born in 1919 - helped me understand that science was very different back then. My elementary school in the sixties had books on science and technology twenty years out of date, and outmoded concepts were taught in schools long after science had cast these ideas out. Thus the pulp era writers were educated under the ideas of the 1880s, even though the scientific establishment had long ago moved on.

It was only after I had started intensely researching LWR - the last couple of years before writing it - that I realized Science had a set of theories that together explained nearly everything well enough, just as Newtonian physics works perfectly well for non-relativistic space. It was not some crackpot hokum - everything tied together and worked. The fact that the only foundational theory from that time that is still scientifically acceptable today is Panspermia - acceptable, but not accepted! - shows just how fundamentally wrong everything was.
