I've seen theme in Burning Wheel and a Shadowrun 5E option book and am aware of them as a core feature of Traveller but what other games include this and where did it initially come from? I'm trying to explore this subsystem and it's variants and history but I don't know where to start beyond what I already know and I don't know that Traveller originated the idea. If anyone can help point me to other games, new and old, that include different takes on it If appreciate it as I try to delve into the topic.

If D&D stopped being the only game everyone played that would be good in every way I could imagine.

A two edged sword.

For various reasons American RPG players love themselves some fantasy RPG gaming. And they like it to be done with the market leading D&D brand. For many groups D&D is the only game they will play. Period.

That's just one edge, losing D&D AND D&D players is two benefits, not one benefit and one detriment. If the only thing you ever want to play is D&D 5E then you are most likely to be the type of person I would rather take up knitting instead of reading me the latest epic le meme Reddit post of a Tumblr chain of a 4chan greentext about some totally random fumble results; nobody playing GURPS ever gave me a fucking ulcer listening to them.

That’d probably be good for smaller publishers in some ways (Paizo made big gains because D&D was fractured), but bad in others (D&D as a common gateway wouldn’t be a thing anymore).

If D&D stopped being the only game everyone played that would be good in every way I could imagine.

Concluded a Fantasy Craft campaign, nothing going on at the moment since I ended up running things because I couldn't find anyone else to run the system and I can't imagine me starting over with strangers to run again. Group just fell apart so I'll be out trying to find something new here shortly but I'm interested in games that hardly ever show up on Roll20 and the like so I don't see myself making much headway.

No, if I wanted to play someone's poorly considered cringe concept I could go to the local gamestore and ask anyone under the age of 20 to give me their homebrew documents.

I'm on mobile so multiquoting is a chore but Savage World's and Genesys are lighter on crunch then I am personally a fan of but I have also only flipped through them at a glance so I could be wrong but they seem substantially more narrativist then Shadowrun proper is; I will say I don't know anything about 4E so I might look into that since my biggest issue is the rules bloat and that it's basically impossible to find anything because of how poorly it's edited and arranged (a cardinal sin in my opinion for any system.)

Well it's the only system I know that has several scatological references in it's core book so that's something.

I'm not versed at all in cyberpunk or sci-fi games but Shadowrun 5E is so poorly organized and such a clusterfuck that I cannot ever imagine messing with it again and 6E has not done anything to resolve these issues and just shuffled them around so I'm looking for outside sources. I like the setting and the lore and how it all works but I imagine by now someone else has made a ruleset that can handle that, without being rules lite or too generic, I just don't know about it. Something less of a mess than 5E but also not a 20 page Drivethru publication about narrative roleplay with your mom, looking for a good goldilocks zone type of game to look into.

I know at some point they released what they already had, but for the life of me I can't find the PDF on this computer. Sorry, if I could, I'd give you more specific info about what they actually finished.

The Spellbound material released to pre-order supporters included a draft of the some new spells sans NPC stat blocks and a preview document that includes two base classes (Conjuror and Reaper), one expert class (Hexer), one master class (Arcane Savant), and two spellcasting feats (Familiar Basics and Spell Specialist.) I would consider it part of the first party material for the game and I personally include them as part of character options when running my own games.

Is compatibility with other games material that critical to success? I see it mentioned here a lot but I've never considered that a factor in purchasing or playing games personally, neither has anyone I've played with in pretty much my entire adult life. I guess if I'm the odd one out on that it could explain why it seems so arbitrary for the game not to excel despite it's crunch competence.

It's something I've never really understood as the game seems to be one of the cleaner OGL "fixes", much more competently assembled than PF for sure, but not many people know about it and it seems to have completely failed to capture an audience. I've always been curious about the title and since stumbling onto the forums here I figured someone here might have a better understanding of the industry and what makes a game succeed then I do.

Sealioning is regardless of your intention, you can mean well and still be sealioning. A bad actor always acts with percieved malice, towards the faith or towards the individual. Its a hierarchy of badness that can be hard to pick out without gazing long into the abyss and it really isn't worth it to be able to read and comprehend the innane shit it usually means. The level dip into Social Justice Wizard just for the "Read SJW" Cantrip is probably the worst build decision I've made in my life. Really tanked my BAB...
