I unfortunately never got into rifts or any other non-TSR games. It was tough getting people to risk the money and time to buy a new system. This was unfortunate because I never really dug D&D or Top Secret, but they were the only game in town. Later on, my brother got into rifts, but by then, I was swamped in Uni and didn't have time to read more than a summary of the game.

tl;dr didn't know about Wuj until Amber came out and then heard about his MTNT game design.

I believe that the best way to compare generations is for the GM to decide before the start of the game how powerful they wish the PCs to be. With a list of the NPC ranks, the GM can then choose for, say, the top-ranked PC to be 2nd compared to NPCs or 3rd or whatever. And then decide to either interleaf the PC and NPC ranks or use some other system for the lower ranks.

This gives the players and GM a fair idea of how they stack up against the NPCs. Not that the GM should tell the players how they plan to sort the ranks they may learn or get a feel for the relative levels as the game progresses.

Good ideas so far. I want to add that there could be a few different things needed to get big T going, then others to actively act against the others.

The chains need to be found, bound and broken. Then some enchanted wine and food, ambrosia style, will need to be fed to him. All the while, the Titans will be fighting against the PCs completion of the tasks and freeing of T.

Once he's up and about, then Warder's more active pursuits come into play with even greater opposition from the others.

I would be interested in playing by post or something similar but wouldn't be able to commit to a regular day and time. Online might support a few methods of play if GM and people are willing. So a scheduled meeting time when a large group of players are together, play by post when a PC is doing solo stuff, small voice or video meeting for two-three PCs talking, add GM for action, etc.

The game is huge and I joined a few months after the others so there was 10+ PCs already playing. I chose someone from the books to keep the number of new names down.

He isn't too powerful; the GM is kind a stingy with xp.

But how would they get 1 per year? From competing with each other? If regular shadow stuff gives no xp and the Courts of Chaos was beyond their reach, then only infighting would work, but that seems like an excessive amount of points considering only once was there a fight to the death, or nearly so.

I'm not sure about reading it like that. Usually the 4 point powers contain all the benefits of the 2 and 1 point buys. The lower purchases have cards and decks in them but the 4 point says 'filled with trump power'. Which seems to be beyond any individual image. How about this: What makes spending 4 points on an item worth it compared to 2 points? For most other items the advantage is explained well enough but I can't understand how it is supposed to work with the trumps.

Many of the great kings and despots would 'convince' great philosophers and thinkers to move to their capital cities. I imagine Amber would collect the great minds of the Golden Circle and beyond to come to the Great Academy of Amber.

A zoo with exotic animals of shadow with sections sponsored by different elders showcasing their favourite creatures.

Hippodrome and Colosseum.

Art galleries and other projects sponsored by the elders. Their in-fighting would also extend bragging rights to the culture in the city.

Fountains and statues.

i have a plateau on a side of Kolvir where many of the lords have built their mansions. Sort of a posh suburb of the city.

I'd say Merlin is the Mary-Sue in that he barely gets injured in the books, everyone seems to like him a lot or they quickly learn the error of their ways and start to like him, gets handed power without much cost, his actions have no negative repercussions, no grudges held against him, and on and on.

I see him as the only member of his generation for years and years until Merlin and the others show up. So he doesn't grow up with the sibling rivalry like the other characters in the books and so doesn't have that competitive streak like the others; he is much more powerful than normal people but insignificant to the elders so doesn't need to do much. But in a game where he has a boatload of cousins or siblings he would develop a different personality. I'll say this because I have been playing Martin as my PC for close to a decade now.

Elder is a floating value, defined as 1st rank +some points (say 10?). a clear define between you and the next generation.

My recent thinking on this is before the games begins the GM doesn't stat points for the elders but ranks them all against each other, so in War it could be Benedict, Bleys, Corwin, Julian, Random, Gerard, etc. for each attribute. Then decide how powerful the 1st place PC will be in the ranking ladder, say top warfare PC will be 3rd overall, then mix the PCs and elders in as you wish. This way the GM can set the power level of the PCs however they want against a sliding scale of NPCs and can also be tuned to how quickly the GM wants the PCs to advance in the attribut ladder.

One issue I kind of (but not really) have with the points for the elders is comparing it to the books and Wujick's rules for xp. The whole Corwin books & Black Rod war must have been the most important thing to happen to Amber since the founding. Nothing else is remembered or referred to that seems to be in any way more significant. Yet the rules say that whole conflict was worth about '25-75xp call it 50xp' per character. So how did the elders, if they were created at 100 points to start like the PCs, rise to the 300+ point versions?

So to add to this conversation about the trump powers a mere 13 years later.....

The books mention the stabbed card as 'smacking of a ritual' or something like that so maybe the ability to pierce the card had something to do with mixing sorcery and trump powers or sorcery+Trump+Pattern. I imagine it as needing Advanced Trump mixed with sorcery.

A greater problem seems to be the 4 point 'powered by trump' for items. What does that really mean? Especially when trump can, as said before, cancel or break the other powers? Would a trump powered sword destroy all sorcery spells, cut through Logrus tendrils? Would the touch of a trump powered item remove all High Compelling on a character? This does seem to make Trump the real trump card in the game.

I don't have the book with me but if I remember correctly Corwin is at the damaged Primal Pattern when he has this thought and is thinking about his brothers and sisters fighting and feuding with each other for so long and to the point where one of them would destroy the Pattern. A 'cutting off the nose to spite the face' kind of thing and he wonders if the next generation will be as proud and combative with each other.

It fits in with how, a few scenes later, Corwin meets Martin and tries to dissuade him from seeing revenge on Brand.

When thinking of creating working guns in Amber, I use the setting history as a guide: none of the other elders had been able to create an item that could fire in Amber so the PCs won't be able to figure it out either. Corwin had a lucky accident with the jewellers rouge and since none of the others has been able to recreate that substance (that we know of) in the Merlin series, it was probably a one-time creation that can't be repeated. Not to say that there aren't other technological devices that could be accidentally discovered. The character would probably need to have a lot of good stuff, and it should probably cost a few points just like in some home-ruled systems that allow players to buy a secret during character creation.
