What no love for Gothard Goebells aka Gothard Von Wittgenstein, leader of the notorious D&Ders (Deviants and Decadents) from Power Behind the Throne and hinted at in Death on the Reik. Not really a major villain or anything. Although I really liked the nobles of Wittgenstein Castle esp the Lady (forgot her name), the Purple Hand has to be my favourite villains.

I do know that 4E overnight left many of us out in the cold. Mind you, I'm not a 4E hater or anything like that but even within my own (admittedly) small circle of gamer friends, it was those who got it and those who didn't. With the latter it was as though a different game was being played and we're talking about a group of gamers right up to 3E and maybe 3.5 had a whole lot to talk about when it came to D&D. I'm hoping 5E enables us to have those conversations again.

I guess our experiences differ. High level play in my games didn't involve the players going around killing gods and stuff. And I know of a few GMs who are just wrapping up their high level campaigns which involved stuff other than killing powerful beings (although they did some of that too). But maybe you're right about "journeying" to high level play. Nothing wrong with that and it what's makes D&D great for me.

Kyle this is D&D, high level play is part of what makes it great. Sure everyone eventually finds their sweetspot but crawling your way up the ladder with no fudging is the stuff legends are made of.

Oh yes, there is that but I have found that in those games which I consider GrimDark (and I'm including some of the games run by friends) all of them have numerous moments of levity.

Well it's not really a tough stance on horror because I don't think that the "negative" connotations of GrimDark neccesarily means that such games are unplayable or not fun. I don't really have a firm definition but taking a cue from other kinds of media I would say that wallowing in a nihilistic pose, engaging in lurid subject matter or just generally presenting a setting where the participation of the PCs generally does little to affect the overall nature of the setting. Understand now, that my definition has really got nothing to do with this thread but since you asked.....

I don't really think that horror should be excluded at least when it comes to RPGs. Whenever I think of GrimDark (not in the 40K sense) I think of material along the lines of Se7en and the original Vanishing (Spoorloos). If an RPG mimics the tone or inspires such a tone, then I think it's swimming in Grimdark territory. I'd go so far as to say, that it's easier to reach such a place using horror or elements of the horror genre.
