This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.
The message boards have been upgraded. Please log in to your existing account by clicking here. It will ask twice, so that it can properly update your password and login information. If it has trouble recognizing your password, click the 'Forgot your password?' link to reset it with a new password sent to your email address on file.

Pen and Paper Roleplaying Games (RPGs) Discussion / Armor, soak or deflect?
« on: September 29, 2019, 11:07:14 AM »
I love the way GURPS dealt with it before 4e.

Armor did both, which gave a second dimension to differentiate kinds of armor. It was really cool in practice.

It was kind of broken mathematically and led to some strange things, which is why they changed it, but I always liked it.

The 5e Starter Set is damn near perfect so of course WOTC is going to change it.

I feel like everyone forgets that China is a totalitarian communist hellscape.

The PCR has better PR than the Soviet Union ever did.

The worst thing to happen to this hobby and many others is we allowed people to frame these things as "communities".

Playing RPGs or boardgames or liking Star Wars doesn't make you part of a "community".

It's a fundamental lie of the modern internet that we are somehow community members because we like/do the same things.

There is no "RPG community" or "Star Wars Community", etc...

There might be communities of fans but that's a huge leap from thinking there is some vague community that encompasses all gamers.

MY community is my friends and family that I play games with. We don't have a misogyny problem or a sexual harassment problem. Maybe yours does but that it fundamentally not my problem and I will not be coorced into changing my behaviour because of your problem.

Zack S isn't my friend or a member of my "community". Maybe he's a scumbag, maybe he's not. I just don't give a shit and my feelings on the matter are 100% irrelevant to the situation and so are yours.

Needless fiddliness seems to be seriously in decline. I tried reading my old copies of MERP the other week and you just don't see stuff like that anymore.

That's true but we're still in the era of "try hard" mechanics. Every game seems to want it's own special, too clever by half mechanics instead of just going with reliable designs.

I'm looking at you FFG and Modiphius.

I'm much more in favor of static HP but I have been known to dynamically adjust HP values if it becomes clear that I made an error when writing the adventure.

So should we start a betting pool on how long it takes for the screaming insanity section of the internet to try and get him shut down, either by going after the host, the service provider or just ddosing the shit out of the forum?

"Twitter/youtube/facebook/patroen/etc... are private platforms you should go build your own platforms if you don't like the rules!"

"Okay, I'll make my own site."

"SHUT IT DOWN!"

Did you at least use the vastly superior Saga Edition?

I didn't. Also ran a highly successful business 1 year + campaign with the revised d20 book. I own all of saga but haven't ever played it.

Which is legitimate, but then they should have said "banned as inactive account to release resources."

But if they did that how would everyone what good and righteous people they are?

If another country want to spend its taxpayers money to subsidize my purchases, why should I care? It seems the only one getting ripped off are the poor citizens of that country.

Currency Manipulation is a fancy way of saying "buying lots of dollars", which increases demand for dollars thus driving the price up and literally making Americans (who earn dollars) richer. Every single business and consumer that imports anything (which is all of them) benefits.

How would elected representatives "protect" or “defend” Americans exactly?

I've lost to ability to differentiate satire from honest opinions.

The benefits of free trade isn't that every job stays around forever, its that we all benefit from the freedom to buy products from the cheapest source.
