This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I picked Masks because I think it's a genre where pbta really works. You can't quantify Superman versus Batman. Otherwise, Superman wipes his ass with Batman 10 times out of 10. It's the squishy narrative (like pbta games) where this genre works best, IMO.

Masks is very good at distilling the supers narrative into a refined, hero-centric universe.

I'm not at all sold on pbta for dungeons (i.e. dungeon world, which is highly regarded), but I feel like Masks hits a sweet spot for the game engine.

(If I played Savage Worlds, I'd probably say similar things.)

My gaming group used to play D-List super heroes using Fate Accelerated Edition and we had a blast.

I haven't found a Supers RPG that I've been truly happy with.

In actual play, Marvel FASERIP does a surprisingly good job at the table with its maps & minis and "word scale" to define abilities and effects. It's not perfect, but if your group loves the MCU, they will probably love the chance to either play MCU characters or interact with them and its all statted out for you.

I've played tons of Silver Age Sentinels and Champions and I don't know if I'd want to deal with either amount of math again. I've played various Savage World Supers games, and while I love the setting concept of Necessary Evil, I haven't had the system work great for me in actual play.

I would go with Ascendant or CLASSIC marvel but without the modern day politics mixed in from current marvel comics over the last 10-12 yrs. Just simply enjoying peoples company having fun with the game.
