Title: OOC Wilderlands - Tales of the Golden Idol
Post by: One Horse Town on January 30, 2007, 02:09:10 PM
Welcome! This thread is going to initially be used to introduce the setting for those who don't know it, explain any differences or rules that i am using instead of those in the official wilderlands setting and eventually to start with character creation. Once we get the campaign going, then this thread will be used for rules questions, out of character discussion and general chin-wagging.

First up, a brief primer on the setting and the fledgling states that make it up. Later, i 'll detail races and Tech levels. :)

For those interested, this is going to be run in the Valon area, but not close-by the city of the Ice-mages. More details once i have posted all the stuff i mentioned above.

----------------------------------------------------------

A Brief Primer

The Wilderlands is a diverse setting in a world built on the ruins of ancient civilisations, from the otherworldly Great Race and the draconic First Men to the evil and mysterious Markrabs and the ancient Kelnorian Empire. The feel of the world is one of decline or new birth, filled with ruins and ancient mystery. In many places civilisation is but beginning to return after the ancient wars that caused the ruin of the early races.

There are very few powerful NPCs to drive the actions of the PCs. The player characters are not pawns in a game, they are the game; able to carve out strongholds, lead armies, head churches or even become Kings. (Note: Leaders of communities tend to be in the 2-7th level range, with only a few exceptions. This is somewhere where the PCs are meant to matter at a relatively lower power level than other settings)

The Wilderlands are largely unexplored and overland travel (and sea voyages) is both crucial and dangerous. Much of the land is unsettled and unknown, riddled with ruins and relics of past empires. Civilisation is but a candle in the dark. Exploration is a key of the setting.

In the Wilderlands you may find the ice wizards of Valon, the red-skinned barbarians of Altanis, the pirates of Tarantis and fierce Amazonian warriors, escorted by their sabre-toothed tigers. Orcs, and other monsters lurk everywhere, waiting to trip the unwary up. But beware, looks can be deceiving; not every tusked warrior is evil, not every Elf ranger can be trusted.

The whole of the Wilderlands setting fills an area roughly the size of the Mediterranean Sea and its surrounding lands from Gibraltar to the sole of Italy’s ‘boot’. (Note: I have made it bigger to better reflect the feel of isolated communities and vast wilds, so it is likely half that size again).

Travel is dangerous in the Wilderlands. There are next to no roads and any that there are, are little better than trails. Only Viridistan and parts of the City State have paved roads that allow swift travel. Where there are no trails, the land is trackless for vast distances, containing only adventure, ruins and the occasional traveller braving the wilds as you do. Yet, the spirit of the explorer is strong and many seek to discover new wonders and marvels in the wild, or even to begin new communities away from competition or war. The world really is your oyster…if you can swallow it!

Civilisation

A few bastions remain from older days or have arisen from the ashes of ancient wars. With only a couple of exceptions, these areas of burgeoning civilisation are little more than candles against the dark. There is very little centralised authority because of the distances involved and the dangers of travel. So even in a well-settled area like Viridistan, there are still vast tracts of land that may as well not be a part of that great city-state.

Viridistan: known as the City of Spices and the City State of the World Emperor, this is home to the sorcerous and otherworldly Green Emperor and his wife, believed to be the last of the green-skinned race of Viridians. He has ruled much of the northern Wilderlands for some time, but his influence had lessened of late. Its provinces contain cities that are nearly city-states in themselves.

City State of the Invincible Overlord: Known as the ‘City-State’, this area is growing in power and due to proximity, tension has been arising between this state and Viridistan. Several wars have been fought.

Valon: A major sea power of the north and home of the tall Avalonian ice-wizards. It normally lives in peace with its neighbours, but has attacked Tarsh on occasion. Valon sits on a great glacier.

Tarantis: Ruled by Atar the Lion, this is a major sea power and has been linked to pirate activity. Merchants here bring rare goods from the far off Kingdom of Karak.

Tula: The legendary city of mages where marvels are seen at every street corner.

Rallu: City State of the Sea Kings. Long kept secret from the outside world, its location has recently been discovered. It is at war with Tula.

Other areas of fledgling civilisation include: The Holy Cities, Warwik, Tarsh, Thunderhold, Lenap, Tlan and Chim.

This may seem like a great deal of the land is peacefully settled, but even the great powers only hold a tenuous grip on power beyond their heartlands. Their influence is felt, but action is much harder to achieve. Between the lands discussed above are large areas settled only very sparsely by hardy farmers and protected by walled keeps. Days or weeks can pass when travelling between two villages and only when it comes into view can you see the trappings of a primitive civilisation.

Intersting. I like the isolated city-states with vast swaths of uncontrolled territory between them.

What races predominate in what regions? Since Ian is a Halfling, would it serve better if we were as well, maybe a group of friends from the same village or somesuch striking out to make our fortune? Or are we going to hand-wave or roleplay the "meet in a tavern" group introduction and just assume we know each other somehow?

The setting is very free and easy with the demi-human races. There are a few *race X* only communities around, but many have a pretty mixed population. I don't think it will be a problem.

I'm going to cover human 'races' next and then a few relevant bits & bobs. Once i've done that, i'll detail our starting point. That will assume that you are a party already, so just a quick line or two on how you met is all i'll need from you. I'll detail the rest (by the rest, i mean locale, 'rumours' etc). My random method of deciding where you start has actually placed you in a really interesting area, so i'll give you a few details and we'll work from there.

It'll be a day or so before i get that far, as i'm copying out bits of book to post, but we should be in a position to fully create sensible characters for the region tomorrow evening or at worst, the day after. :)

I plan to get the human races bit up later tonight.

Races

As I don’t have the players guide to the Wilderlands, the unique races of the setting will be diluted in impact and have no mechanical relevance. However, a brief outline of the mainly human races and subcultures are presented here. I have left some out entirely.

Alryan: Found in the north of the Wilderlands. Can be found in Valon.

Common Avalonian: Live in Valon and are a dilution of True Avalonians

Common Viridian: The main population of Viridistan. Diluted many times from the True Viridians.

Ghinorian: Descendants of the populace of the empire of Kelnore. Found in enclaves around the Wilderlands in the Ghinorian successor states.

Gishmesh: The people of Tarantis and surrounding lands. Can be found in Valon.

Karakhan: Known as Horse Lords, these are people from the far off land of Karak.

Skandik: Well-muscled sea-loving race, known as Sea Wolves. Use longships.

Tharbrian: Nomads of the central Wilderlands. Settled in some places.

Unusual 'human' Races that have no in-game pluses or minuses. I would prefer that these were not used for player characters as really they should have some mechanical effect and I’m not willing to make these up at this time. Sorry.

Altanian: Red skinned barbarians from Altanis.

Amazon; Female warriors

Avalonian: Blue skinned ice-wizards and shipwrights from Valon.

Bardik: Voice can hit any pitch and tone or mimic anything. They say they were created by a diety of mirth and merriment.

Cavemen/Confed/Elphan: Primitive human tribesmen

Dorin: Desert dwellers. Have an extra membrane that covers the eyes.

First Men: Unknown amount left and whereabouts not known. Said to resemble a cross between an ape, a human and a lizard.

Ghul: Strange, very rare beings with translucent flesh.

Orichalan: The Dragon Lords of old and dragon blooded. They are quite rare having been hunted to near extinction by the descendants of their ancient servitor races.

Languages

There is a common tongue, but each of the races and unusual races have their own tongue also. Some unusual race tongues may not be available for learning. At least not to start with. Monstrous tongues and the demi-human languages are as standard.

Religion

Again, due to a lack of the players’ guide, I’ll be using the standard d&d pantheon as found in the players’ handbook/SRD. I’ll alter anything of note in the setting to reflect this, although there may be cults named differently to the name of the diety in the SRD. Due to the isolation involved, many communities may only know a God by the local name (my get out to use some of the names in the Wilderlands book!)

Tech Level

Because of the uncertain grip that civilisation has on the land and the distances between communities, the Wilderlands setting gives each village/town/city/castle a Tech Level. This determines what types of materials and equipment that this community can produce itself. Thus, due to isolation, a decent sized town with few raw materials close by, but with good arable land may only be able to produce a low level of technological devices. Complex weapons or even ones of iron may be beyond it. However, a small village in a good location with natural resources may be able to produce steel weapons and sundials.

This doesn’t mean that all items cannot be bought in a low-tech village, but the prices are likely to be high, as brave merchants have brought them in from far off places. I will let you know of any relevant limits to equipment available in a settlement. This is in addition to the GP limit of the settlement.

I’ve decided that as starting PCs you can equip yourselves as you wish, however. This is due to your adventuring and travelling ways. On the road though, it’ll be a different matter!

Since I decided to be all difficult and play a Halfling monk, I don't expect anyone else to conform to my character concept.  My rough concept, as I was idling in traffic today, was something like this...

My character has suffered shame and injustice in the community that she calls home.  Though she remains devoted to her people, she half-voluntarily removed herself, joining a woodland ascetic commune to find peace with herself before returning home.  Having attained her basic training, she must travel the world at large, returning to the commune periodically for further training and contemplation.

So, basically, my character could turn up just about anywhere and seek the company of just about anyone.  Think of her as like a Mormon on a youth mission.  A Mormon who kicks ass and takes names. :haw:

Valon

The City State of Valon dominates this region and below the sea largely unknown humanoids are allied with the ice-wizards of that shimmering city. Glaciers start their long march just north of the city.

The cool climate and many mountains force most travellers to visit Valon by sea. The isles of Pokrantil and the mysterious City of Alchemists provide a haven for the Brotherhood of Sea Tigers, a loose band of pirates. Malikarr (City of Alchemists) is one of the last holdouts of the ancient Orichalan civilisation.

Valon’s region contains some locations mentioned in ancient tales, such as the fabled Dwarven city of Krazandol in the shielding mountains and ruined Sotur, whose ruins can be seen by passing ships.

The region is known for its heavy rains and snows, and desolate landscapes. It gets a good amount of rainfall, which turns to snow in autumn and winter. The lowlands can be covered in several feet of snow and the highlands hold snow and ice year round. Cloud cover is typically 70-80 percent and up to 100 percent in winter and it is a rare day when fogs and mists do not cover the ground as well. (Note: If you’ve seen The 13th Warrior, consider the Norse landscape depicted there as spring or summer in the Valon region, although some local areas vary to some degree). Temperatures typically reach about 10 Celsius in warmer months (with some weeks higher than this) and are often many degrees below freezing in the depths of winter.

Common Avalonians, as well as some True Avalonians (mainly in the City State itself) populate this region. Gishmesh, Tharbrains and Alryans are also found here, along with the odd member of another human race and communities of all the demi-human races.

Starting Place

The PCs are in the eastern section of the Valon region, cut off from the City State of Valon by freezing seas only rarely travelled by courageous ships. In winter, chunks of ice flow through these waters, making travel more hazardous, but unlike the western sea of the Valon area, this stretch does not freeze solid.

Further to the east of your starting position, over many, many miles of rugged hills and hardy forests of pine, birch and juniper, lies the Valley of the Ancients and the city of Tarsh. This city is slowing reclaiming its greatness and although not a threat yet to the city of Valon has seen a few light skirmishes with that mostly peaceful city. Tarsh is the jewel of that region, stories of the Tenifell Lords travel far and wide. Whether any remain is unknown.  The Valley itself, even further east is said to hold many of the First Men and their dragon allies, who live in caves in the valleys sides. These areas are said to be weeks of hazardous travel away, but you have heard stories from hardy travellers about them.

You are currently in hex 4110 (for you Wilderlands owners out there!). This places you in the Dark Woods. This imposing thicket has a canopy so dense that little, if any sunlight reaches the forest floor and even moonlight cannot pierce the canopy. As a result it lives up to its name. Rumour is bad about this wood; Giant Spiders, sucking bogs, mad tree-men and the dreaded Necromancer of the Dark Woods are all said to reside here, making travel without a guide perilous. A hidden elven community can be found here also. Only the truly brave & dedicated can find it in order to trade, although sometimes a lone elf will appear elsewhere to trade. As they are more advanced in manufacturing than other local communities, most folks take these rare chances gladly.

To the north, three or four days travel away is the village of Garthain, situated in the hills. A day of dense forest travel away to the south east is the hamlet of Fairlea and in the Dark woods, the elf village of Breem.

I will post a bit more character specific information later and we can start talking about your characters, where they are from and how they met. The random starting generator has situated you in the edge of the Dark Woods, midway between Fairlea and a beacon house that sits above a sunken city. Garthain would be a suitable place to have come from; a community of over a thousand souls. Likewise, for those of a more wandering nature, maybe far off Tarsh was your homeland and over many months of wandering you have found this region. Tarsh is large and would be a suitable place to have learnt the slightly more obscure classes, such as Monk or Paladin.

As a reminder, the climate is largely harsh and cold! We are starting in summer though.

I'm ready to go whenever you guys are- I have an idea for a (common) Avalonian cleric. Since the Wilderlands uses analogs of the various mythological pantheons, which deity would be more appropriate for this character?

Any alignment (I'm not particular)
domains: Magic and Air (ice?).

I was thinking like Thoth, Hecate, Freya...

I was going to just use the pantheon in the d&d players handbook, but i'm fine with you choosing a couple of domains and worshipping one of the Gods mentioned in the wilderlands setting or even making one up!. There is a God of the North wind, i can't recall the name just now. I'll look it up.

Alignment, i'm easy with. Any sort of alignment can be played, although of course overtly evil people may encounter the sort of problems you'd expect and being ostracised in this setting isn't the best choice!

I'll try to get a big old list of local rumours up tonight. Then you guys can pick one as a reason you are where you are, a little bit of why & how you are together and get going on character creation.

Shall we post our character summaries here?  I know that I'd like to, just so that someone with more d20 nous can proofread my interpretation of the SRD.  I had a look through a copy of the v3.0 PHB, which seems to be at odds with my interpretation of the Class/Race rules.

Yep, that's the idea. :)

I'm posting the last major chunk of info now. After that, you can create your characters, give a brief few lines about how you met up etc and using the list below choose why you are where you are. Are you investigating a certain rumour or just travelling the area? You decide.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

---------------------------------------------------------

Rumours

These are tales told around the campfire, by wandering merchants and enshrined local folklore. Some may hold a kernel of truth, some may be made up and some may have changed beyond recognition after constant retelling. Who knows whether they hold any substance?

Dark Woods

Druids have been found impaled upon the high branches of trees in the forest.

A stand of trees at the woods centre radiates the darkness that covers the forest.

The Necromancer of the Dark Woods is

·   A banished Demon or
·   He is the Mayor of Fairlea or
·   He hates Elves or
·   She turns into a tree at dusk

Fairlea

The ghost of its former owner haunts the cellar under the Griffon Eye Tavern and it’s moans whisper of a golden idol.

Orchid Sarnles carpets float on water.

Vampires want the village for unknown reasons.

Fairlea Pharos (the beacon)

A golden idol of a mermaid comes alive at the full of the moon in the sunken city. She travels in a clam chariot drawn by giant sea horses.

Dap the Fish is known as a local guide.

Ancient alchemical secrets can be found in the sunken city.

The rock face where the city once stood before it sunk into the sea is now a nesting place for hundreds of sea birds. Some nests hide entrances to catacombs. One adventurer said that he saw a talking golden idol of a six-armed man in one such cave,

Garthain

A hermit in the hills above Garthain is said to have developed magical powers after an encounter with a strange golden idol.

A new cult has grown recently. Led by a Dwarven scholar.

A fierce red bull attacks anyone harming sheep in the hills.

Strange bones have been unearthed. A foreign visitor believes that the sea will return to reclaim them.

A Troll dressed in finery has saved two merchants from certain death.

Gnomes have installed a mechanical construct in the village square.

Tarsh

The Tenifell Lords are:

·   Vampires or
·   All dead or
·   Plotting a conquest of Valon or
·   Looking for a strange golden idol

A group of the First Men have approached Tarsh and demanded tribute.

The new marshal of Tarsh’s army is a Giant.

---------------------------------------------------

Have fun!

The 3.0 PHB and the 3.5 SRD have some slight differences. For one thing, your small-sized monk will have smaller sized weapon damage. I can help proof your character for you though.

You may also wish to use this Javascript character editor to build your character:

So, any ideas folks?

As far as dice-rolling conventions go, i don't want to use a program for it, so we have two choices.

1. I roll everything after you have informed me of your actions and then i report the results.

2. You roll everything. Which could well result in delays, as you wait for me to reply as to success and then you roll damage etc.

My prefered option is 1, but if you would prefer 2, then we'll see what we can do to speed that up a bit. Such as you posting a to hit roll, followed by a 'provisional damage' roll (in the same post). If you have hit, i apply the damage, if you miss, i ignore it.

For speed, whatever you choose, you should try out http://invisiblecastle.com

It provides a link for every roll and you can see if anyone attempted re-rolls. So you just paste the links in the post. (Yeah, I know you just said you didn't want to use a program, but this one works fairly well and is intuitively web-based).

My character is "pretty much" ready. You haven't provided chargen guidelines so I just went with standard roll. I'm working on feats right now. I'm making a common Avalonian, but I still want to have some benefits with ice type spells.  I may just multiclass into sorcerer...

I think the DM can roll and tell us what happens. That way there's some "mystery" to things like search/spot checks and whatnot. I think that having players roll stuff like that is kinda blah anyway - how would you "know" you failed, realistically? Well, unless the trap goes off or something. :)

I'll check that out, although my reticence is mainly technophobic in nature...

Yeah, standard roll chargen. The Water Domain gives you some ice based magic as well as water/foggy stuff.

This is my favored option.  It provides the most seamless roleplaying experience with the mechanics fading into the scenery as it were.  The only drawback for me is that it won't encourage me to learn the system very quickly, but, seeing that we're not sitting face-to-face, this is probably a good thing for everyone else.  So let's view that as a plus.

I'm working on a backstory that will blend with one or two of the rumors.  I'm immediately partial to the lure of the sunken city of Fairlea Pharos.  This also puts me in the ballpark of the "golden idol", which seems to be the titular focal point of the adventure.

Thanks.  I've been comparing the 3.0 hardcopy with the 3.5 SRD, and the changes seem to be strightforward.  I also found the 3.5 update booklet online, though it seems to focus on spells and monsters.  Believe it or not, the problem that I've been worrying about is that I was actually short-changing my character on Feats and Skill points.  I think I have it all worked out, though.  Also, thanks for the link to the character editor.  It'll help me track down various little bonuses and penalties here and there, I suspect.

I'm wrapping up jury duty right now with lots of time to kill, so I hope to have a quick backstory ready by this afternoon (Pacific Standard Time).

Cheers,

As to starting gear: Standard starting Gold as outlined in the PHB (based on level)  and we're all starting out as 1st, correct? Also - any on-line links to a map of this world?

Looking like a Karakhan barbarian here. Lured by strange tales of these "golden idols" and rumors in his own homelands about their resemblence to the long-lost horse idols of his own people. If he can recover even one of his people's lost idols, then his place as Chieftan is assured. More wives and horses than he can possibly count!

Background
Luludha came from an itinerant halfling community that settled in the hills adjacent to a small human village outside of Tarsh.  In the year before her coming-of-age ceremony, a youthful indiscretion with some human youths brought catcalls and sneers of derision from the humans, and glares of humiliation and rejection from her own people.  With the weight of shame heavy upon her, she became increasingly distant and rigidly principled.

Foregoing her ceremony, Luludha left her people to join a woodland commune of martial ascetics some way to the north of Tarsh.  Some day, she will absolve herself of her shame, find her wandering people, and return “home”.

In the mean time, having attained her basic training with the commune, Luludha must travel the world at large to test her resolve, returning to the commune periodically for further training and contemplation.  For now, the rumors of lost secrets of ancient alchemy in a sunken city draw her toward Fairlea Pharos and the companionship of like-minded wanderers.

And finally:

Orlok, Avalonian cleric of winter here. I am following up on rumors of an animated statue of a mermaid. I have undertaken an independent investigation of this statue on the off chance that it may be connected to an obscure prophecy. Since I am schooled in the domains of water and magic,  I feel uniquely qualified to investigate this.

Cool guys, looks great so far. I'll have a look more closely through your PCs later.

One thing off the top of my head for Ian is that you should have 10 hit points. 1st level characters start with maximum hit points. No need to roll. :)

Ah.  Yeah, I'm still trying to shake some of my old school habits.  Like rolling the stats -- I went straight down the list, in order, and rolled only 3d6 instead of 4d6 and assigning them at will. :deflated:  Honestly, though, I'm not sure I'd have come up with a character I liked better.

Also - any on-line links to a map of this world?

Here's a link to a players map of the Valon area.

http://www.judgesguild.com/fans/pm_Valon_lores.pdf

The password is Bledsaw.

Should work...fingers crossed!

EDIT: Ah, that's pretty blank. You could fill that in as you explore! A few things to put on it. Fairlea is in hex 4210, the pharos is in 4009 and the Dark Woods extend northward from those hexes. Garthain is in hex 4006.

As far as dice-rolling goes, are we going with me rolling is response to your actions?

Hey, where does this all fit in with the old Mayfair editions of the City State of the Invincible Overlord?  I ask, because a local hobby store has a huge overstock of pretty much all of them, including the Calandia Guidebook, at very reasonable prices.

Not at all. The only thing in common is the City State, and even that is, other than a couple of locations, completely different.

The maps are really pretty, though. Some of my favorites. If they are pretty reasonable, I think they are worth picking up. If you want more detail, let me know.

That's a cool map. The box set has that world map split into 18 poster size maps; one for each geographical region (with a hell of a lot more detail, although they are b&w). So i don't mind you viewing that one to get your bearings a bit as you travel around, but bear in mind that your characters know next to nothing that is shown in that map, including names of geographical features (until you find them out from locals etc).

I should also probably point out that although there is more detail in the boxed set maps and quite a few more settlements than shown on this one, with very few exceptions, that's it. Apart from around cities (of which there are only a few) no villages or communities exist that aren't on the (boxed set) map. This is to ram home the expanses of untamed wilderness between these communities. Also for your reference, i've increased the scale of the maps, again to ram home the isolation of communities. This would compare to the scale on that colour map being around 65 miles per inch instead of 45.

Add to that very few trails that are any better than tracks (hardly any roads and only one or two highways) and most travel is through trackless wilderness. Thus, although the distances may not seem vast, travel to get to other communities takes a looong time.

:D  Yeah, Karak isn't detailed in the wilderlands setting boxed set. If you look at the map Ian found, Karak can be presumed to be further east of the Tarantis region. They stage the odd incursion into Tarantis and some hire out as mercenaries there. They tend to be tall!

You've had quite a journey to get to the Tarsh region!

Duly noted on the map detail.  I figure that Luludha knows her way through the general countryside between Tarsh and her current environs, but very little in the way of specifics (including actual distances).  So, looking at the color map puts me roughly on par with her knowledge. :)

When and how shall we begin?

Right. Everything seems in order PC wise.

One more thing before we get going. If you guys could fabricate a brief section on how long you've been travelling together, any past exploits or points in your history that you want me to consider bringing back into the game at some point and anything else you want to drop in. Once we've got that settled, i'll start an In Character thread, make a starting post (we'll get going with a bit of a bang) and we can take it from there.

Once the IC thread is up, use that for in character discussions, interactions with NPCs or problems i present you with and come back to this thread for rules talk, giving me your actions etc.

So, to sum up, give me a potted history of your party and anything else you want me to cover in-game at a later date. Once that's here to your satisfaction, i'll start the IC thread. :)

Post by: Abyssal Maw on February 02, 2007, 04:09:27 PM
Thanks Rob Conley!

We haven't been travelling together long, because we're all first level. But let's say something like "we met recently, by chance, during a storm. We all end up sharing the same overhanging ledge as shelter from the rain."

Or something like that.

Alternately the overhanging ledge can be a shallow cave, and we can start with an encounter? Or perhaps we have been travelling together since that time after hearing something large crashing around in the undergrowth, and deciding to band otgether for mutual protection.

Someone else please make a suggestion if that's a problemo or you have an alternate idea.  Whatever anyone else suggests will be cool as well.

Here's me:

Orlok has pale skin with strange tints of blue (that marks him as an Avalonian, although of the lesser variety). His thinning white-blonde hair and icy grey eyes give him a slightly hardened look, and he seems to always have a slight smirk on his face. He wears a set of new-looking scale mail. His forearms (which are bare) are covered with twisting arcane-looking tattoos in the forms of lightning bolts and twisted tribal runes worked in blue ink. Over his shoulder he wears a grey and white fur cloak. When it rains he leaves it open, and he doesn't seem uncomfortable for being wet.

He also wears a simple cone-shaped helmet and carries both a shield (usually slung) and a morningstar.

Luludha's halfling family and community originally travelled north along the Ruling River until settling south of Tarsh, where she spent most of her childhood.  Following her dubious and humiliating issues with the local human village, she has spent the better part of the last year or two in the monks' woodland commune north of Tarsh, and has only recently emerged from seclusion.  Not wanting to return to Tarsh or its local environs, Luludha has begun to wander west from village to town, with no genuine goal.  Not being too worldly, she has been actively seeking the company of fellow travellers, discreetly making inquiries regarding people and destinations of interest.  Anywhere within a hex or two of the Ruling River west of Tarsh would be a likely place for anyone to meet her.

Or, just to make the scene a little more inviting and less potentially confrontational, sharing the same shelter of a stable's eaves in a village where, after dark, all is shut tight and no one will open their doors or shutters until just before dawn for fear of bandits.  Our first commonality is our resentment of the villagers who won't show hospitality in the face of a rain storm.  Our second commonality is the smell of the wet livestock.

Here's Luludha:

Bundled in travelling furs against the cold, Luludha is probably mistaken for a small child at first.  Standing well shy of 3 feet tall with a very slight build, it's her facial features that probably give away that she is both mature and a Halfling.  She has dark, "dirty" blonde hair, pulled back in a tail, but that falls in wavy wisps about her narrow, sharp-featured face and against her pale yellowish skin.  Her dark brown, almost black, eyes are wide and slightly slanted, and are extremely expressive in spite of the fact that she does not make direct eye contact with others often enough.  Though it might seem shy or submissive at first, it quickly becomes apparent that she is simply reserved, even removed.

Fair enough. We'll say that you guys met in Fairlea and shared a farmers barn for the night. It was whilst here that you heard the rumours about the beacon and discovered you have a trove of shared stories, some of which seem to at least originate from the same source; a (or many) mysterious golden idols.

A quick bite to eat the next morning, a helpful (and you suspect rather fearful) farmer told you of the whereabouts of the beacon and said that a guide there named Dap the Fish may be able to help you. You have already been travelling for a day through the Dark Woods.

I'll start the IC thread tomorrow. My initial post will set the scene and enable us to hit the ground running. :)

Ok, my plan is for Orlok to summon a Celestial Badger.

It's only going to be able to fight for 1 combat round, so once the badger appears, (hopefully right next to one of the spiders- I can cast the summon at range) it automatically rages and full-attacks the nearest spider. I have augmented summoning, so it will have +4 strength, +4 con. Also, it's raging, so add another +4 str, +4 con on there.

(Also it is smiting evil in it's first claw attack in case the spider is evil).

Since the badger has weapon finesse, the extra strength only affects damage.

The stats you shoul use are +4/+4/-1 (claw/claw/bite)
damage is 1d3+3/1d3+3/1d2+3

If the spider is evil, the first claw attack is +1 more damage (for smite evil)

Once it attacks, the badger disappears.

If Garren locks up one of the spiders in melee, I summon the badger into the flanking position, so he gets +2 on all his attacks (+6/+6/+1)

Luludha throws her throwing axe at one of the spiders, 6+4 =10, miss. Orlok summons a celestial badger next to the other spider. As it has not been hit in combat, it is not raging as it attacks, claw 16 +4 = 20, hit, 2 damage, 4 +4 = 8, miss, bite 18 -1 = 17, hit for 4 damage. Spider two is dead and the badger vanishes.

By the end of the round, the boar is running through your ranks and the remaining spider is about 10 feet away.

Initiative
Spider 14
Luludha13
Garren 12
Orlok 4

The spider moves towards Garren and attacks 9+4 = 13, miss.

What do you do?

EDIT: Feel free to post in character posts to reflect the mechanical results posted here.

Luludha keeps an eye open for the boar, but focuses on the remaining spider (you know, the one she whiffed on with her first axe).  Shifting her second readied axe into her favored hand, she whacks at the first available bit of spider, preferably away from the fangs.

Ok. After the spider misses Garren, Luludha tries to hit it with her axe, 10 + flanking 2 = 12, miss. The Garren swings his mighty sword, 10 + 5 + 2= 17, hit, 16 damage! *ouch!*

Orlok cocks his crossbow and sights at the beast only to discover it to be a sticky mess on the forest floor.

I will make an IC post to reflect the combat shortly.

Ah.  And we're currently standing within the ruin of a circular wall with a drainage channel, so this is some sort of tower?  Luludha tries to get her bearings in relation to the coastline and local topography.  Are we on top of some kind of hill?

And the statue that we've forgotten to ask about thus far.  There's an arm broken off -- I assume the rest of it is here?  What does it look like?  What position is the hand on the arm in?

[Edit:  I just re-read the entry regarding the statue's arm -- there's no mention of the statue itself.  Got that.  But what pose is the arm and hand in?]

I've edited my last IC post to make it clearer. The hand of the statue is rust coloured, suggesting that it once held something rather than there being a rust coloured stone in there. It was a bit ambiguous, so i've clarified. :)

Ah.  I somehow got it in my head that the culvert was a drainage channel within the circle of the walls we're examining.  Mis-placing the two together had me thinking that we were somehow standing on the top of a buried tower. :deflated:  It seems plain to our characters that they are not standing at the top of a buried tower, but I think Luludha's declared actions still seem sensible.

Werekoala - Yes, I'm wondering if the stone belongs in the hand of the statue, or if anything else belongs there for that matter.

If you hadn't have investigated further, you wouldn't have found that out!

BTW, i love the random ruin generator in the wilderlands boxed set. A few rolls and the ideas come rolling in! ;)

Which causes me to wonder:  At what point do the results cease to be random rolls, and become impromptu inspiration for a whole adventure? :)

This used to happen when I'd GM Traveller.  My players would totally latch onto an insignificant random event, become obsessed with figuring out why I even mentioned it in the first place, offering all variety of outlandish theories, and I'd catch myself saying, "Guys!  Guys!  It was just a random roll on th...wait.  That's not a half bad idea."

A couple of questions about the statue/arm...

1) It's sticking out of the ground. Does it seem to be attached to anything beneath the surface?

2) On what scale is the arm sculpted?  Lifesize (i.e. human scale :p )? Or larger or smaller?

3) The exposed statuary is outside the ring of ruins/mosaic, correct?

4) Am I sending myself on a shipe hunt here?

1) Maybe, you're not sure.

2) Lifesize

3) It's inside

4) I dunno what a shipe hunt is, so maybe? :p

Sorry -- rather like a wild goose chase.  Someone tells you to go hunting a snipe without first telling you what a snipe is.  Whereas, with a wild goose chase, you're looking for something definite that isn't there, a snipe hunt involves looking for something without know what it is you're looking for. :)

So, am I hunting wild geese or snipe?

Hi guys. I've got a serious deadline coming up this week, so my time is limited 'till the end of the week. I'll try to look in from time to time and make a post or two, but until the end of the week, you may have to make a bit of your own entertainment. :(

Ok, Orlok is casting detect magic and concentrating on the direction of the cellar door. This should reveal within 60' any sources of magic, their auruas, the strength of those auras, and the school of magic associated.

Here's the link:
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/detectMagic.htm

Note how it breaks out into first, second, third round. So if I get nothing in the first round, I'll cancel the spell and inform the rest of the party my findings. If there's something, I'll report what I detect as I get it...

By the way, I am at DDXP from Thursday until Sunday! So I will be missing out a bit. Just have my guy fade into the background, firing crossbow bolts at any danger. Poorly.

Orlok's spell reveals nothing of a magical nature within the dark cellar.

The animal noises become a little more excited. Perhaps whatever is down there has caught a bit of your scent?

Right, you are attacked in the cellar by a nasty beasty.

Initiative

Luludha 20
Orlok 20
Garren 12
Wolf/Hyena beast 11

Post your actions here and i'll take this forward later.

Once the casters have done their job, I'll try to block the doorway so any remaining beasties have to get through me to get to them, and I'll deal damage accordingly.

Orlok will fire his (already loaded) crossbow (at whatever it is), then drop it and ready his shield.

Next round he will also ready his sickle, and try to move into an available flanking position for Garren. If there's no way to get to a flank, he'll ready his sickle and close in on whatever it is, alongside either Garren or Lulu.

How many axes can I throw in a round?  I assume that it's only one, but something makes me think I can get away with two.  I can't find the ruling in the 3.5 SRD, though.

Whatever the exact case, Luludha has two throwing axes readied and pops off as many as possible this round.

Well, you can get away with two thrown weapons.. but they'll be at a severe penalty.

Basically your first attack (primary hand) is at -4, and your secondary is at -8. (This is taking into account that the hand axes are considered light weapons).

If you have the Two-Weapon Fighting feat, the penalty drops to -2/-2

One. As soon as your base attack bonus reaches +6/+1 you get two attacks, one at +6 and modifiers and one at +1 plus modifiers. :)

Luludha throws her axe at the beast, 17 = hit, 3 damage. Orlok fires his crossbow, 11 = miss. Then Garren interposes and takes a big swipe at it, 14, miss.

The big beast then howls and as it does so, the skin from it's face peels back in an horrific display. Will saves, Luludha 17, Orlok 13, Garren 11.

Garren is frightened and seeks to flee the scene (sorry! )

Okay, this ought to get good.  Looking over my character sheet, I notice that Luludha is barely more effective with a hand axe than with her open palm attack, and no more likely to hit.  So, odds being what they are, it probably makes sense to apply Flurry of Blows at -2/-2 and hopefully do damage twice (yes, yes, which will be from 0 to 3 points total  ).  Let's call it a fist and a kick, shall we?

Sucks being a 1st-level halfling monk. :D

Damage will be minimum 1 point even on Flurry of Blows (yes, even if reduced to 0 or below because of strength penalty).

Yes, you should be using Flurry of Blows.

Those are iterative attacks. In this case Luludha is asking about two-handed weapon fighting (which also works with thrown weapons). It's prohibitively penalistic (as shown) if you don't have the feat, but even if you dpon't have the feat, characters can usually try it.

Not to digress too far, but wouldn't Rapid Shot be more appropriate than Two-Weapon Fighting?

I think I know the direction I want to take Luludha.  She's going to be an Old West Gunfighter, only with throwing axes.  Point Blank Shot, Rapid Shot, Quick Draw.  She'll be one bad little woman. :D

Yeah, sorry. Didn't click! :o

Round 1

Orlok and Lulu move as one towards the hideous beast, Orlok moving to flank it.

Lulu aims a brutal kick at it, 4 = miss and a punch, 17 = hit!, 2 damage whilst Orlok aims his sickle, natural 20, critical confirmation 11, no critical, 2 damage.

The beast seems badly injured and strikes out at Lulu desperately, bite 16, hit, 4 damage, claw 13, miss, claw 16 hit, damage 2.

The beast mauls Lulu severely resulting in a total of 6 damage to the halfling. (btw Ian, i've assumed you are using your dodge against this critter.)

Garren runs up the cellar stairs into the dull light of the forest.

Round 2

Lulu strikes out again, fist 9, miss and punch 2, miss. Orlok attacks, natural 20 (again! this is your luckiest of days Mr. badger!), confirmation roll, 20, hit for 7 damage. The beast collapses at your feet.

Now that the noise has receeded, Garren can return. However, the halfling and Orlok can hear noises from down the corridor.

Please feel free to describe your PCs actions and the battle to the IC thread.

Oh well, there's always next time Ian!

As Garren is returning, four dog headed humanoids, about 4 feet tall scurry into the cellar from the passage. They each hold small darts ready to throw.

Initiative

Lulu 19
Kobolds 17
Orlok 17
Garren 11

Next gents?

I'll spontaneously switch out my last summon Monster for Cure light wounds on Lulu. If the kobolds get too close, I'll cast on the defensive.

If they hang back to throw missiles, my next spell will be Obscuring Mist (my domain spell, and consequently my last one, other than the 0-levels...)

Otherwise, I'll move up to attack.

Lulu throws her remaining axe 16, hit, 3 damage

Orlok casts clw on Lulu, who recieves 9 hits back, fully healed, just as the other kobolds throw their darts. 1 is thrown at each of you, Lulu attacked, 16, hit for 2 damage, Orlok 19, hit for 1 damage, Garren 10, missed. The last dart is thrown at Garren, 8 miss.

After they have thrown the darts, the kobolds retreat down the passage and as no-one is within reach there are no attacks of opportunity.

Garren reaches the cellar floor and the others.

Piss. I'm rather looking forward to Defelct Arrows at Level 2.  Luludha yanks the dart from her (shoulder?) and charges after the kobolds only as far as the opening to the passageway.  Any chance of catching at least one of them?

You chase them and see them retreating into another chamber and catch a glimpse of a few more kobolds with missiles ready. The one you injured is lagging a bit behind the others.

Having just read the favourite d&d build thread and the train-wreck it has become, do you seriously want to trade Dodge in for one of those?

As we're just starting out and you're getting to grips with the system, that's no problem.

I'd also just say, stick to what you want and don't take too much notice of all the optimizing stuff going around. For one, we're only playing the SRD rules, so only stuff in there will be used and secondly, i play the character i want to, so i ignore all this build stuff. Go with what you want. There'll be little to no consequence to doing it one way or the other. You're all in the shit! (oops, did i say that out loud) :o

Not at this point.  I figured that, if Dodge hadn't actually been used yet, we could call it a wash, but I don't feel right returning a used item. :)  Besides, realistically, this isn't the venue to go about pursuing optimised level progression.  I'll be surprised if any of us make 2nd Level by the time we call this quits.

I have to admit that, in my newfound enthusiasm, I got a little big for my britches there.  I appreciate the sentiment, though.

As for this business, Luludha has held up at the entrance to the passageway and is retrieving her three axes (if possible).  Seeing Garren charge down the passage, she quickly sizes up the situation with her weapons and Orlok's intent, then heads off after the barbarian.

No, no.  Nothing personal.  It's just that, given the scale of time progression in PbP's, it's best to not set one's expectations too high.  Like my dreams of multi-classing Luludha into a Shadow Dancer when she hits 6th Level... :haw:

OK. Garren runs into the passageway and Lulu collects two thrown axes, meanwhile Orlok casts obscuring mist to cover your attack and then moves up in support.

You immerge in front of startled kobolds and attack. Lulu, 19, hit 2 damage, the wounded one goes down. Orlok moves after his spell and Garren attacks, 22, hit, erm...18 damage.

The kobolds are too surprised to fight back.

Round two.

Lulu, 8, miss, Orlok natural 1, miss, Garren, 17, hit for 10 damage, another one falls. The four remaining kobolds attack, miss lulu, miss orlok, miss and 19, hit Garren for 2 damage with a small spear.

Round 3, lulu 3, miss, Orlok 9 miss, garren 19 hit, dead. miss lulu, natural 20 &16, critical hit on orlok, total 5 damage (ouch!), miss garren.

Round 4, lulu 15, hit, 1 damage, orlok 6, miss, garren 20...dead.

The two remaining kobolds throw their weapons to the ground and beg for mercy in a clipped language.

I make that 2 live kobolds, Lulu on 8 hits, Orlok on 2 hits and garren on 13 hits.

Luludha is Lawful Neutral, and I still can't figure out what to do.  Summary execution for their unprovoked attack might be in order.  Then again, maybe we killed their pet. :p

I'm suggesting that we leave in an orderly fashion.  Luludha has no interest in punishing the kobolds further, but neither has she any interest in their welfare, given their attack on us.  If Garren chooses to do anything barbaric she will look on dispassionately.
