This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Question

Now I have read the rules, how do you get Powers?  Just like skills, except you can't buy them to start the game?

wulfgar

I don't have my copy of the rules handy, but basically yes.  However, my recollection is that you can improve skills immediately any time you get experience points.  You can only gain a power when you level up (and you level up by increasing your personal force).  The experience chart shows you how many powers you can have at each level.  There's some discussion in there somewhere about the power gained being appropriate for the world you're currently adventuring in (if level up while running around Middle Earth, the GM may not feel it's appropriate for you to take another level in the Cyborg power for example).

Roll up some stats for Brumbar and I will explain the game to him and get him to design a character

wulfgar

Here's the rolls for Brumbar's character:

Muscle 11
Speed 8
Stamina 13
Mental 13
Luck 2
$100 (but like your character I'm happy to give him additional stuff if it fits the background he comes up with)

Life Points 22

Lawbag

has this anything to do with the Phillip Jose Farmer books?

Hmmm, I've never heard of Philip Jose Farmer before, so I can't really answer that question.

Lords of Creation is one of the handful of games that Avalon Hill put out in the mid 80's.  The basic premise is that PC's that start out as fairly ordinary people can grow in power and have all kinds of adventures across time and space.  It could also be used to run a game within one genre- fantasy or futuristic sci-fi for example, but the author's intent is to mix and match any and all genres.

Who is Farmer and what are his books like?

And are you up for a game?

Makofan

Philip Jose Farmer's most famous book is probably "To Your Scattered Bodies Go", which launched the Riverworld series.  In it, all the people from history are resurrected on a giant planet that has a huge river that runs through it.  When people get killed, they just reappear somewhere else on the world.  The great explorer Richard Francis Burton decides he is going to figure out what it all means.  It eventually explores the destiny of mankind and the afterlife.

I myself do not think the game is based on Farmer

Lawbag

I was specifically referring to his Gates of Creation series, which mirrors very closely the Amber books.

Nicholas Graf is a graduate student in engineering who arrived here on a football and wrestling scholarship. Unlike other atheletes he is very interested in actaually getting an education and has spent his academic life studying electrical engineering. Being an orphan with no relatives he spends time working on campus as instructor for various clubs like fencing and the computer club. His major has been electrical engineering but his electives have been mythology and ancient languages.

Would you like more?

wulfgar

Sounds good.  I can whip up the rest of the stats later today.

wulfgar

So Lawbag, would you care to join the game?  If so, I'll roll up some stats.  Otherwise, we can get started tomorrow with the intrepid duo of Nicholas and Sabrina!

John Henry Harrison couldn't make the football team to get a scholarship, so he occasionally tends bar at night to supplement his meager financial aid. He also plays poker when he can (he's reasonably lucky).

21 year old Junior (he'll take more than four years to graduate...) studying pre-Med.

(Very loosly based on Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce, from the book MASH (not the movie or the tv series, but the original book.)

Welcome aboard, I'll have a writeup for your pc posted shortly.
