Title: (Interest) Testing out a Game System
Post by: Snowman0147 on March 29, 2015, 11:18:44 PM
I basicly made up a game system that I call Struggle of the Moirai (http://paperlaboratoryofdreams.blogspot.com/2014/08/struggle-of-moirai.html).  Think of it as traditional gaming mix in with some elements of FATE.  Mainly the elements I like which are is the ability to completely customize your character and use those customizations as powers to be used in the game.

What I need are brave souls that are willing to give this game idea a shot.  So are you willing to test out mechanics in a game to see what works and what doesn't?

I would actually love to be part of a play test what are your expectations of your testers?

Well other than reading the rules nothing much.  I was thinking using the This Mad and Twisted World as a setting, or perhaps generic high fantasy.  The generic high fantasy would be easier to grasp, but being a custom setting that I made This Mad and Twisted World would be more interesting.

Think This Mad and Twisted World as a post apocalypse setting that runs like OFF and runs on engine only fueled by your chaotic imagination.  It is weird, surreal, and while not horror it does have off putting moments.

Imagine earth and your ordinary life.  Suddenly a god like being pulls the planet through a portal and devours the world.  Your one of the few survivors that manage to stay safe on a floating chunk in the sea of chaos.  In the five years after the end of all days every thing is changing.  Some chunks shrink into nothing while others grew into continents.  Animals began to act like humans and some humans had transform into pets.  Ideas and concepts take a life of their own.  The world now is chaotic and strange.  Even you are changing, but with new powers that could prove useful.

It is play by post.  So you got plenty of time.

Oh yeah here is some images from OFF which is a RPG Maker game made by a french guy who goes by the name Mortis Ghost.  These are fan made images and the reason I am showing you this is because this is how strange This Mad and Twisted World could be.

I posted the link to my blog that has the rules.  In fact right to the very page that has the rules on it.  Go to the table of contents and they are links.

Follow this link (http://paperlaboratoryofdreams.blogspot.com/2014/08/this-mad-and-twisted-world.html) to get to the This Mad and Twisted World blog post.  In the table of contents you should see the sheet link.  Click on that and you can download the character sheet.

I went ahead and tried to make a google Sheets Document... Here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/18ZxJlDQei1EgSuHO4EFOe_m29TPx9ADjaohYU579nBg/edit?usp=sharing) it is, tell me what you think?

Oh shit...  I forgot the switch sheets.  That is the old sheet your looking at.  I added more things to it.  Mainly change strength to might, endurance to stamina, intellect to insight, and added followers.

Also make sure at least 6 of the merits have boxes to indicate that they are core/faction merits.  That way players can place a / on them for damage merits, or a X if the core merit is some how destroyed.

Also you need a place where a merit can show its rank.  Ranks are important as they cheapen the cost of stunts and reward styles with more heroic points.  Ranks are really important and each merit has its own rank.

Now I go off and switch the sheet and add in the movement rules.  Scale is already added and it tells you what it does if you look at the table of contents in the Struggle of the Moirai post.

Okay made the switch.  Thank you for pointing that out to me even if you did it indirectly since you didn't know I made a updated sheet.

Here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/18ZxJlDQei1EgSuHO4EFOe_m29TPx9ADjaohYU579nBg/edit?usp=sharing) is the revision with the suggestions you made, some of the equipment headings got a little shortened up...I'm sort of still learning google sheets.... and I've really never been good with Excel anyway... so lets go through a Character Creation

Character's Name: 'Officer' Roan

Character Concept:

Latino Male,  5'9 , 175 lbs - Spanish Accent ,  Shaved head, Brown eyes

Roan Was a cop in the Old World... He wasn't a homicide detective or a Narc... He never cut it in Vice or Organized Crime.... He was the Parking and Ordinance Officer (P.O.O for short, and it really was a crap job) God only knows why they even gave him a gun (Merit 1: Good Aim), maybe Granny who didn't renew her Handicap Sticker would accidentally pull out her 9mm instead of her cell phone one day? But he was a real cop, he really had the training... one Time he even arrested a drunk driver who had parked illegally, with the car still running. He tracked down the owner by a discrepancy in his license plate(Merit 2: Discovery), and found him passed out drunk. Roan insisted on being called 'Officer' , though the little rodent's who rode their skate boards all over town, instead of the skate park where they were SUPPOSE to would call him Rent-A-Cop and "Osssifer ", And although he wanted to bash their face in to teach them a lesson, he learned to let it slide (Merit 3: Let it Slide).

.... Let it slide That is....until the world got sucked into another dimension.

Since he has no family and Once he realized their was no one left alive from his Precinct...He couldn't let this go, and since he was the only cop in town...(Hell ... maybe the world) .... he better Investigate what happened, and apprehend those responsible... At least he has his 'Sweet Esposa' Still... and for some reason it never seems to run out of Gas in this new dimension ( Special Item: Cop Car that doesn't run out of Fuel )

How does this look to you so far?

My thoughts on the Merits so far...and You can help me out because as I said I'm compeltely unfamiliar with TMTW....

Merit 1: Good Aim   (  A free shot/Combat Roll )

Merit 2: Discovery ( An automatic success on some type of perception/search/spot/investigate)

Merit 3:  Let it Slide ( some type of Automatic success on a type of Mental Save or Will save, something like that)

one rank into each one

 Ability Rolls (https://rolz.org/dr?room=SOTM) (6d10 take highest 4): 26 , 31, 33, 34, 26, 30

ok Heres (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WTzLFKLwhEwGNBRyx-9zAlzu4XmXtPsq2i91q8AAE3g/edit?usp=sharing) the Finished Product for Approval ....

As you don't have any equipment besides Armor/Weapons listed yet I spent all my equipment limit on that... All of this is for your approval of course as your rules/blog clearly mention lol, on everything.... Let me know if you want any  clarification on anything I wrote or did

You got the merit wrong.  The first merit is your concept of the old world which you got right.  The second merit is your concept in the new world.  The last merit is your special talent, equipment, or whatever.

Edit: Skills are also wrong.  They can't be higher than 30.  You have skills that is 40 and 35 so they need to be reduce.  Also you got some skills that could be used to increase some of your stats.  Your leadership of 25 increases your followers by 2 if you want it to.

May I also suggest you get one follower to heft some of your gear.  Right now your at full capacity which means you can move 5 yards per phase instead of the usual 10 yards.  I mean if your just a normal beat cop why do you have a shotgun and sniper rifle?

Thinking on it your first merit would be Beat Cop of (city name) and your third merit should be your car.

Ok I didn't know I could start with a follower... The reason for the different types of weapons, is for the different situations One might come across... I envision the Sniper Rifle just staying in the car...unless It's needed... But 'IF' Roan is the only Law and order around now, he has to wear alot of hats... As far as the 2nd Merit, Since I'm unfamilar with the system could you pick one?

Just awaiting your suggestion for a 2nd Merit, and I put the Follower in Equpment because I wasn't sure where else to put him

Well it is more of a setting effect.  Basicly every thing of the old world that survived eventually changes.  What they change to depends on you.  You really got unlimited options here.  You could go from beat cop to a flying whale for all we know.

My advice is think super heroes, fantasy characters, sci-fi characters, and so on.

What about Merit 2, is That I'm a vampire now, and have to gain followers by Biting them and making them into Vampires? Is this kinda the lines you're talking about?

Sure the vampire idea can work well.

Today isn't a good day for chat for me.

Allright so Merit 2 - is Vampire ... Maybe something to the effect that this new dimension is a Mirror of a former life that you once were, or a future life that you would become... and thats why when Roan came into this World he had a hunger for Blood and an aversion to Sunlight, Silver, Garlic, wooden stakes.... etc.

It is more like a mutation.  Has really nothing to do with the character, but he did change to that none of the less.  So yes your character became a mind controlling leech against his own will.  Kinda sucks for him as he has to deal with that fact.

This is cool, have you also tried to get some interest at Rpg.net? Just curious? Otherwise I think you should start an IC thread because It doesn't look like were getting too much more interest here....

Given all the things I said about what the developers are doing with Exalted I would probably be ban within the day to be honest.  The dev/moderators are touchy on that subject.

Though I will make that IC thread.  Are you sure you don't know anyone that may want to try this out?  I don't mind going in with one player, but I figure it wouldn't hurt to ask.
