Title: (IC) Classic Traveller
Post by: pbj44 on May 15, 2014, 10:16:22 AM
Okay Radek:

Very seldom has your head pounded and throbbed the way it does now.

Rolling over to your side merely serves to make your DNA ache.

After some thought you raise the lid of a single bloodshot eye and survey your surroundings. Your lodging room is so small that fortunately you don’t have to do much work to take it all in. The room itself  is 9x13 feet. You know that as you have paced it carefully and measured it often – just to ensure that nothing has changed during your long fits of drinking and boredom. A locker, bunk, and a small, battered dining table with a single rickety chair make this a perfect picture of home -  allowing for the exceptions of the rusty pipes around the ceiling and the peeling wallpaper.

Right on time, outside your single dirty, yellowed porthole, the passing automated airship blares it’s familiar message:

“A new life awaits you in the off-world colonies, the chance to begin again in a golden land of opportunity and adventure. New climate, recreation facilities...”

(Distortion and squeals)

“Let’s go to the Colonies!”

Your first task this morning as a honorary colonist is to get both feet on the floor. You accomplish this task with some effort, and finally come to a happy resting point with your head somewhat about your knees. Outside, to torture you, the airship makes yet another pass.

“A new life awaits you in the off-world colonies, the chance to begin again in a golden land of opportunity and adventure. New climate, recreation facilities...”

(Distortion and squeals)

“Let’s go to the Colonies!”

You snort.

So this is Hell...

Locally Hell is known as Marcos.

Staggering over to the Comm terminal, you hit a few keystrokes and stare again at the TAS readout:

Marcos (Beta Hydri 2221) C310322-9

Marcos is a rockball world with the merest trace of atmospheric gas. This and its moderate temperature range, made it the most habitable world in an otherwise fairly unpromising system. Astrography is the only asset Marcos really has; it is a link on the Jump 2 communications link to Coreward-Trailing and thus was a logical place to build a Science Commission base.

The base is the only major settlement on Marcos and is home to about 80% of the world’s 6,000 people. The remainder dwell in small outposts, many of which undertake tasks that support the base. These include research stations, observatories and specialist installations such as water prospecting rigs. Marcos is thought to have a modest amount of water locked under its crust and several ‘wildcat’ wells have been drilled to investigate promising sites.

Only small amounts of water have thus far been extracted but even this minor success goes a long way to making the base self-sufficient. The techniques for locating and extracting water may one day become part of standard terraforming practice. The station itself has a small spaceport capable of handling several ships at once but tends only to have a couple on the ground at any one time. These include Science Commission couriers, research ship, supply vessels and naval patrol craft as well as traders bound for the Outer Veil.

Marcos does have a decent market, with goods from the core systems available at typically inflated prices. It is one of several places along the fringe of civilized space where personnel can be hired for expeditions into the Outer Veil and attracts small numbers of capable individuals seeking work or companions for a venture. It is also a good place to get fleeced by people pretending to be that sort of individual or a merchant with contacts in the core systems.

Your reverie is interrupted by the persistent chirp of the Comm link.

Travis walks into his favorite bar, growls at some kid, who moves very fast to vacate his spot (Don't need that cantankerous Old Man getting mad again...) sits down to a full water glass of, well, it's not water...pulls out a cigar, shoves it in his mouth, and lights it. He looks around, daring somebody to tell him that there is No Smoking here...

@Radek - You are on voice only since the imager has crapped out, "Hi Mr. Borgni, it's Violet here at the front desk. You have a package here, hmmm...lemme look...nope, It don't say who it's from. Also, two fellers came by and left a card for you. Said you should call and make an appointment. Say! That address is over in the Municipal quadrant! Maybe things are starting to look up for you!"

@Travis - You barely sit down when Sanke slides in next to you. (There was a spelling error made when he home-tattooed a nickname on his arm - He tried for several years to get everyone to call him "Snake" but eventually gave up and just goes by "Sanke" now. He simply stared at you blankly when you first suggested he simply get the tattoo lasered off and start over.)

(OOC - Think of the character "Angel" from the Rockford Files.)

He rubs his hands then holds one out, "That will be 50 credits Travi-boy! Ha, ha! I found you some goooood info!!"

Sanke glares at you for a moment then shakes his head looking troubled, "Hey, I had to mix with the wrong types to get this info, plus I had to spread some "love" around, if ya know what I mean." He rubs his fingertips together in the interstellar sign for money.

When the bartender comes by he hisses, "Hey brother, make it a double." He then nods at you. The bartender nods in return and comes back with a larger drink.

"And bring me a sandwich! With some meat in it this time!"

"I'm tellin' ya Trav this was hard work."

"See, there were these dudes, pretty salty I heard, that landed here some 10 years ago. No, I don't know why. Anyway, they get into a jam with one of our leading underworld citizens who happens to object to them breathin' his air up, so they somehow end up outside the base buried 6 feet under. Well, somehow the port fees for the ship keep gettin' paid, ya know? The citizen that iced them dudes maybe has some plans fer usin' the ship, you dig?"

He digs into his sandwich hungrily.

"Well, he has the ship hauled over to the graveyard and puts it under wraps. Nows the cool part: That citizen gets in a fight with another citizen who plants him in the desert same as them others. Everybody forgets about that ship in the graveyard! Everybody except for a buddy of mine who just happens to work at the yard and has been sellin' parts off of it on the sly as he just so happens to know that hanger's security passcode. Trav, a ship! Shoot, a real ship! Okay, okay, it's missing a few minor parts and prolly needs some gas so' it will go, but did I not just hook you up?"

"I told him you might be interested in fencing some parts, so he's gonna let us take a look at 'er."

Travis looks over to him, finishes his drink, throws his payment on the table, throws Sanke 50 credits, and as he gets up...[am tired of sitting on this barstool right now], he reaches over and grabs the scruff of his collar and drags him out. "Come on, let's see this empty hull of a Ship."

Following Sanke you leave the watering hole and head across the town complex. Eventually you get to the public changing station at the South airlock and rent a pair of Vacc Suits for 10CR, that you pay for the two of you. After carefully donning them and performing safety checks you head out the airlock and walk the short distance to the Derelict/salvage graveyard.

The local graveyard features acre upon acre of junked equipment, starship components, and in some cases the whole ships themselves. Eventually Sanke leads you to one of a half dozen sealed storage hangers. He gives a cheerful wave to a Vacc Suited driver of a small bulldozer working in front of the facility.

The man turns off the bulldozer, dismounts and approaches. Over your comm system you hear, “This your pard? Good! Lets get out o’ this dust, c’mon.”

He turns and leads you over to the hanger and types in a code, deliberately keeping his entry code hidden.

“You’ll have to stay in your suit mister, costs too much to keep this place in oxygen.”

“Lemme turn the lights on.”

Floodlights pop on about the hanger lighting up several ships.

“Those two are stripped down to the hull metal, though I can give you a good deal on the scrap metal. That one there is the one your partner is interested in. Well, what do you think? Plenty o’ parts on this old gal.”

Off by itself your gaze turns to  an interesting Empress Marava class starship. The "Meteor" paint scheme suggests something to you…your suspicions are deepened when you spot both the telltale "A3" on the hull shipyard plate, and a supercharger nacelle.

Radek was prepared to be surly to however had the audacity to call him this early and when he had such a terrible hangover, but when heard Violet's voice he mentally sighed heavily and calmed himself a bit.

He clears his throat and says in a more pleasant tone, "one can only hope, Darling.  I be down in a minute to pick it up.  Thank you."

He gets up and throws his clothes on quickly.  He gargles some mouthwash and roughly runs a comb through his hair.  After a quick splash of water on his face, he guzzles a glass of water to sate his parched throat and body.

Satisfied that he looks good enough to go out in public, he goes down to the front desk to see Violet and pick up the package and card.

@Travis - The man shines a torch around inside the cargo hatch, "Hmm...Port avionics, low berths, crew and passenger fittings, the nav gear, bits off the supercharger, and part of one engine."

"Hmm..."

"Lots, o' wirin' missing. One of my buddies pulled a load of sensors off it."

"See anythin' you like? I'm ready to cut deals on parts!"

@Radek - Young Violet greets you with a wink, "You ain't gettin' older, just bolder!"

She hands you both the package and card and whispers, "I changed the date on your check-in so you'll owe less in the end."

Her sunny smile warms your day a bit. You knew her father back in the service and have kept the promise made to him to check in on her. Violet has been working here at the hostel since she stormed off her ship in a fury when it arrived here in port last month.

She's a expert purser and cargo scrounger.

Expert enough that it infuriates her that most men can't get past her stunning looks and striking eyes.

The card says:
                                     Eldon Tyrell

                             PORT AUTHORITY COUNCIL
                           DECK 14/ROOM 8/MUN QUAD

You open the package which simply contains an electronic key in a green striped holder.

He then leaves and makes his way to the place on the card.

@Radek - You stroll for a while through the marketplace and eventually end up on the other side of the base at the great set of Municipal buildings.

Taking the elevator up to Deck 14 you arrive at a finely appointed office level. A dapper looking young man at the entrance desk smiles at your arrival and stands.

"Good afternoon Mr. Borgni! We've been expecting you - Mr. Tyrell will see you right away. Please follow me."

He leads you down several passageways, and finally to a red-leather padded door. Opening the door, he bows, and waves you inside.

You enter the luxuriously appointed suite, noting that such lavish surroundings are certainly not in keeping with any part of this base that you've thus far seen.

A fit, bearded executive interrupts his virtual golf game and smiling, turns to greet you and extends his hand:

"Good to meet you! I'm Eldon Tyrell, but just call me Ed! Please, have a seat."

He turns to the young assistant, "Robbie, please give us about 30 minutes, okay?"

Robbie nods and departs, shutting the door.

He pours you a drink, "To the Federated Nations of Humanity!", and throws his back with a single swallow.

He sits down behind his desk and waits until you sit as well before he resumes.

Putting on a pair of glasses, he examines some data on a Tablet device, "Well sir, you've got yourself quite a record here - and looks like you're in between jobs!"

"This is excellent! I really think we can do each other a couple of favors! I would certainly like to throw some credits your way!"

He stands and pours himself another drink and begins to pace.

"You see, the Port Authority here has its fingers in a lot of different pies. Of course we manage this facility, but we also handle mail, as well as courier services. Our biggest problem is that very few merchant ships come out to this backwater - and most that do have very specific business in mind. The government doesn't seem to have the funds available to station a few vessals out here - despite my frequent requests! So, now I'm forced to improvise a bit when it comes to getting their transit requests taken care of. Seems like my budget's larger than theirs."

"Do you like it here??"

He grimaces, "Myself, I hate it. There's nothing green."

Collecting himself, he turns his smile back on, "But a jobs a job as they say."

He drops the smile and stares into your eyes.

"Hey."

"You wouldn't be interested in Captaining a ship for me, would ya?"

Mean while, as Travis wonders around the ship... he secretly stashes a star chart he saw, hoping it will tell him just where in Hell this particular Hellhole is located. As much as he likes Sanke, he himself doesn't remember much on how he got here, or really just where "here" is.

He is still waiting on the answer to his question...noticing the squirming the Yard Worker is doing at that question...

@Radek - Tyrell nods at you, "Well, you're not stupid and that's a good start. Sometimes I need to move stuff from place to place quietly. I need to confine my business to as few people as possible, and that's where you come in. A ship that's off the radar commanded by a Captain that's off the radar. That's what I need. Every now and then a very weird job might come up. When one does I will pay you extra for that job. Pay for your own gas and repairs - I don't want my name on any paperwork. Period. We communicate via TAS classified ads. Any jobs you can scrounge on the side are fine with me."

"My predecessor acquired a ship that most folks have no knowledge of anymore. That's a good thing. It's in hanger #6 over in the graveyard south of town. The passcode is 11217. As he waits, he looks at her...not in a leering manner, but more, kinda like that crusty old Engineer on her last ship, as if he's sizing her up. He kinda looks familiar, but no, he died 4 years ago. She remembers the msg like it was yesterday. As she looks his name up, Travis Scott, she thinks...no, don't know him...yet...she shakes her head.

She gives you a smile that lights up the room, "That's so mister. Folks just seem to like to do me favors. I never figured it out myself. Here, watch.

She begins to smile at you - at once you feel the effect.

You feel like you have known her for years. You find yourself worried about her welfare, wishing there was something you could do to make her happy. She is perhaps the most lovely girl you have ever seen. Perhaps she is the daughter you never had...

You know the rat who owns this hostel. You are fairly sure he has tried to put his hands on her. The thought makes your blood begin to boil. There's no other answer, you simply have to kill him...now. You have to..

Abruptly, all these new feelings begin to fade and cool. After a few moments your head is again clear. You find yourself looking at an attractive young girl, but no goddess.

Violet frowns and pulls her eyes away.

"You see? And I wasn't even really trying. Usually guys find themselves getting worked up over the same stuff that's worrying me, like the owner here. Sorry for running on. I don't know how, but I feel like I know you from somewhere, like I can trust you. I won't be here next month, but it's nice to think of a friend being out there somewhere."

She smiles sadly at you, "So yeah, I can scrounge."

Plain luck we ended up on the same planet...Memories of an old argument, bad words, regret, and yes, fondness of her, bouncing on his knee so many years ago. She must never know...*

"Well, I had an interesting morning, and I have no intention of staying here myself, so am working on a plan to leave, but am in need of a Scrounger to get a junkheap space-worthy...interested???"

Keying in the code you enter the hanger. Fumbling around for a few minutes you hit the lights. You quickly note that there is no life support in the hanger and luckily find a working torch and begin looking around. You spot the ship right away (OOC - see images from page 1!).

@Radek - Having inspected the ship you know it will need a substantial amount of work. Looking about the hanger you spot an office and enter the hatch to make your purchase inquiry. Once the vestibule has sufficient oxygen the door to the office clicks open.

Entering the office you see a harried looking clerk working busily at a terminal.

He looks up a bit startled and recognition blooms on his face.

"Please tell Mr. Tyrell that I have worked overtime to get all of this paperwork ready. Please sit down and we will go over the material. United Starlift has purchased the vessal for you, so I need no payment from you."

You feel your eyes glaze over as he carefully works you through each detail of the contracts and your ship's papers. He has also thoughtfully had your Master's Licensure updated.

The bottom line? After signing everything, you now hold a carefully sealed file folder declaring to the world that you are now a proud owner operator for United Starlift, and owner of the starship named "Gussie".

He informs you that you are free to change the name and to just let him know what new name to register.

He dons his Vacc Suit as he is now done and heading home. Once outside in the airless hanger he shakes your hand and bids you good day.

As you turn to take one last glance at "Gussie", you spot three folks approaching in their Vacc Suits.

@Travis - Heading over to the hanger with Violet and Sanke something makes you quicken your step. Just a feeling...

As the three of you enter the hanger you know what that feeling was. You are witnessing the final handshake of a ship's sale. Everything in your bones tells you that your ship just got sold. The new owner glances at the three of you as you approach.

@Travis - Violet smiles at you and says, "Relax, we have to be subtle about this. Let me handle it!"

@Radek - An attractive young lady in a Vacc suit leaves the other two and approaches with a bright smile. You recognize Violet!

"Mr. Borgni! Did you just buy this starship?"

She points at the "Gussie".

"If you did, we would like to sign on as crew!"

She smiles brightly at you again!

"We would be a really good crew!"

Radek smile brightly when he recognizes Violet and he replies casually, "hello, Darling.  As a matter of fact, yes, I did just purchase her.  She needs some real work done fast to get her ship shape."

He looks past her to the two men with her, and then says cautiously, "yes, I will need a crew ASAP.  Who are your friends?"

He knows starship engineering and repair them down to the last atom  - and he's very handy to have on the bridge, cause he can fly and navagate these ships real well."

"Okay, I confess I don't know his buddy Sanke well at all because we just met - but i'm sure he'll be useful as well!"

Radek sighs and says, "I've got sixteen days to get her up and running for her first Milk Run.  This is a hard deadline, people.  My business associates strenously frown upon exceeding timetables and projected costs."

Looking to everyone, he asks genuinely, "can you do it in such a short time frame?  Travis, can you get her up and running if Violet comes through with the parts?  Violet, can you get us the parts in time?"

"Yeah, get a repair crew and take her to the Ship Repair Facility if that's what it takes to get Gussie ready," Radek replies back.

As an afterthought, he asks, "are you a whiskey man, Travis?"

Sanke snorts, “The Gussie fly in 16 days? Whoo boy! Borgni, I’m gonna go out on a limb here and guess that them folks you’re partnered with is gonna want lots of QT on this project. That actually makes things simple in a way…we don’t have to worry about towing her. But, we’re gonna need to hire a work crew.”

Violet nods and adds, “Shoot, I know lot’s o’ folks that need a job and knows their way around a ship. We’re gonna need to hire a work crew, get life support and power back up and get all the crew quarters fixed up. Then we can start the real work on the ship.”

“Mr. Borgni, can you give me 20,000cr? I’ll get those items taken care right away with it.”

Sanke pats Violet on the shoulder, “Borgni, you can count on us!”

“Ewww..stop touching me creepy man!”

Sanke laughs, “Oh, she’s a pistol she is!”

"Alright, first...Yes, I do enjoy Whiskey, Scotch, any of those..."

"First order of business...aux power needs to be connected, life-support recharged, Hull checks, then we can work inside the ship outside these dam Vac Suits. Second, crews quarters refurbished so's we can move in to finish Engineering work, gonna need sensors, computers, there is a great supercharger we need to get operational, Power-Plant needs checking, jump-drive and Maneuver drives will need replacement parts and op-checked...Violet, you have some eng and tech skills, will need your help, Sanke, check and go over the guns...it's your ass if they don't work. Use your contacts and get us some ammo, also tell the yard worker you know where in hell those missing parts went to. Oh, any upgrades will be welcome, Radek, what Tech skills do you have?? "

Travis heads off to get power connected...first things first...

Sanke heads inside the Gussie to help out.

"As he enters the hatch he murmurs to Travis, "I think I'm winning him over to us pard! See - he already asking us about our favorite booze! I'm gettin' you in solid!"

Loudly he says for Radek's benefit, "WELL, LET'S GET BUSY WITH THIS LIST IN HERE - HEY! NO GOOFING OFF, YOU!"

Surprisingly, he actually gets busy himself.

Meanwhile, Violet begs off from working in the ship right away and instead heads back to town and within the hour workers begin drifting into the hanger and getting to work. First, a portable airlock is added to the hanger front door. The life support is pumped into the hanger. Eventually the hanger pressurizes enough to unsuit and open up the ship for airing out and cleaning.

More and more folks arrive, and soon a group of 30 cleaners is onboard the ship scrubbing and sanitizing the spaces. Around dinner time an enormous sand crawler pulls up and locks into the airlock. The cleaners pour out of the ship and begin to offload brand new bedding and fixtures, rapidly arranging them into the ships freshly cleaned spaces. The air is quickly filled with the sound of showers and faucets running, and freshers flushing. Power cables are hooked up to the ship and lights wink on throughout the passageways and spaces.

Soon after, Violet comes inside and announces that the dinner truck has arrived. It too lines up for the airlock and in short order folks are spread out all over the floor of the hanger eating their dinner and drinking cold beer.

For herself, Violet has ignored dinner and is currently focusing on laughing and talking to a portly gentleman that has just arrived at the hanger. He blushes and smiles at her every word, nodding in agreement. After a short time she gives him a hug and he staggers away back to the airlock.

She walks back to Radek, "That there was Mr. Moody from the parts yard. He'll be back here in the morning with a sand crawler full of parts, but I'll need another 30,000cr. Is that okay?"

"All of these things that are done today are the easy stuff. The hard part will be making the actual repairs and getting these systems back online."

She gives you a hug, "Well, let's just enjoy the easy part today I guess."

Travis sits in the bridge, going over papers and check-lists, mostly hand written. He calls Radek over and has a sit-down with him, bottle of Whiskey and 2 glasses ready, well, 1 is, his is already seen a shot or two.

He looks over at him, "My name is Travis Scott, former 1st Officer and Chief
Engineer of a few Merchants. and you are???" He continues to scribble notes as he talks...chewing on a well chewed cigar.

The work crew chief lets you know the crew quarters are now ready to go. The will come back tomorrow and work on both Galleys and the passenger quarters. He nods goodnight to both of you.

Fortunately, the ship's hull is solid. Life support is currently hit and miss - life support is showing active on the upper deck and dead on the lower deck. With the fault being so large it should be fairly simple to chase down in the morning.

The next day is a busy one with Mr. Moody dropping off a huge load of parts and supplies first thing in the morning. Violet pays him off and whispers to him a bit which again has him blushing and laughing quietly with her.

The massive work crew quickly set about continuing the work on life support for the lower deck area. Others fan out to work on the power plant under Violet's direction. By the end of the day the crews are ready to fire up the power plant and thus take the ship back onto regular life support. Violet thanks them for their quick work and signals Travis on the bridge to fire up the power plant on a test run.

OOC - Okay rarmy - roll 2d6 for the first two items on the list posted in the bridge. If you roll high enough we can call the whole two weeks successful in getting the entire job done.

Radek nods as Travis speaks about Sanke and possible modifications to the ship.  He takes a sip of whiskey and a smile instinctively crosses his face as the alcohol warms his throat.

A good and smooth blended whiskey is such a simple pleasure, he thinks to himself.

He sets the glass down and looks Travis in the eyes as he says, "what do I want?  I want the freedom of spacing and to make some money.  Look, we'll do good and honest business.  However, once in a while we'll transport some cargo for some associates that we shouldn't think about, talk about, or look at.  We just move it from one place to another as quickly and efficiently as possible, and then get paid well for our discretion and punctuality.  Understand?  Are you good with this arrangement?  Will Sanke be good with it too?  I know Violet personally as he father was an old friend so I'm not worried about her loyalties."

@Travis- "The damned power distribution net is shot!"

"You know what that means? We're gonna have to crawl through every conduit on this tub and chase down every single error. CRAP!"

The next 10 days are crazy, but at last you think the last of errors are taken care of. Travis, visibly relaxing, reaches over into a Pilot's bag, pulls out a bottle. Your eyes lighten up as you see the label, Single Barrel, Well Aged, and expensive, a Bottle of Whiskey you've seen the well-off drink. He pours 2 full glasses, and salutes you.

"Good...Let me start with 3 things...
1. I do believe there might be a void in the Fuel Tank I want to explore, will let you know how that goes...
2. We both know all ships have internal and external cameras, I WILL be installing additional cameras, as well as cameras that will monitor the cameras, in ALL Spaces...I once was on a ship where the hijackers used the Heads for their weapons and bombs, after all, nobody has cameras in the Heads...(he smiles)...
and 3. I am going to install secret hatches and doors in the Landing gears and back part of the ship, incase we ever have to sneak back on board or leave unseen...
4. and I may as well add some remote controls for the ship, something you and I can carry whenever we're off the ship.

anything else???" .. as he pours 2 more liberal shots...

Quote from: pbj44;751061@Travis- "The damned power distribution net is shot!"

"You know what that means? We're gonna have to crawl through every conduit on this tub and chase down every single error. CRAP!"

The next 10 days are crazy, but at last you think the last of errors are taken care of. You get a small victory when the repaired jump and thrust drives pass all their diagnostic tests with flying colors as well as the fuel purification units. Life support is now running properly throughout the ship. Finally you are ready to test the power distribution net again!

OOC - okay rarmy - roll 2d6 again!

(OOC - OK, seems we're back in sync...Travis rolls an 8 )

Travis spent the last 10 dys installing cameras and such...installing secret doors...you hear him hum a catchy tune...some thing like
"I feel the black reaching out
I hear its song without a doubt
I still hear and I still see
That you can't take the sky from me."

He almost seems happy to be going back to space...

You can't take the sky from me

Take me out to the black
Tell them I ain't coming back
Burn the land and boil the sea

Sweet. Travis shows the other three his find, inside the forward fuel tank is 2 spaces, one with 4 bunks, and a separate empty space, and the very, very cleverly hidden feul transfer system so when an Aux Fuel tank is filled, is totally covers the spaces, but can be emptied thus allowing entrance to and from by some "Fuel Tank Maint" Hatches. all this, the new secret doors, and new, updated surveillance systems, all shown during the off hours when they are the only ones on board, out of site of the "Watchers".

Captain, if I may, as 1st Officer...

Radek - Captain - Navigator - Medical
Travis - 1st Officer - Pilot - Chief Engineer - Asst Medical
Violet - Purser - Cargomaster - Asst Engineer
Sanke - Weapons - Security

with your permission, and we really need a real name for this old tub...

Travis assumed the Berth right behind the bridge, Captain has his Quarters, Sanke, then Violet. (also a special interlock has been placed on the shared Head for Violet and Sanke...)

At all times the "watchers" are being watched, communications monitored...

"Capt, all systems Green, need to take on enough fuel to actually get to the Starbase Re-Fueling station, we're space ready, but we need to talk about the SuperCharger, Our Ace in the Hole..."

(OOC - What needs to be done to get her up and running, should give us Thrust 6 instead of the standard 4...)

As the two of you walk over both men advance to meet you. The uniformed man breaks into a friendly smile, "Hello! Is one of you the Captain of this ship?"

"I'm LT. Maddox, I'm with the Constabulary here on Markos." He nods to the other man, "My friend here Mr. Spota is a representative from our Merchants Association. It seems as though there was a theft of some cash at the hostel that both of you were staying at!"

He smiles and shakes his head, "No, no, I know that neither of you had anything to do with it!"

"The fact of the matter is that both the cash and an employee named Violet McCloud disappeared at the same time, and we are searching for her - just some routine questions and we will cut her loose. She has a good local reputation, and passing a simple polygraph exam will certainly satisfy all concerned. I heard that she had visited your hanger several times, so we wanted to come by and clear things up."

He flashes you a broad open grin, "Your cooperation is much appreciated!"

Pleasure to meet you gentlemen," Radek says with a smooth smile and easy manner, "Violet?  Yes, she's the receptionist hostel that I am staying at.  She's a nice and bright girl.  I was having a conversation with her and mentioned that I was going to need a work crew to help me get my new ship up and running and she offered to help.  She was invaluable in getting the work crew together and settled for me.  Unfortunately, I haven't seen her after she put the crew together for me.  We've been busy here at the yard getting her up and running.  I've got deadlines and got to get her into space to make some money."

He again nods to the 2 Officers, and heads back, muttering commands into a communicator.

*Thank the Space Gods for some pre-thought and codes...Sanke should be on alert, and Violet now knows to keep a low profile...*

As he turns to leave, he stops, turns around..."Wait, you said that girl at the Hostel?? Dammit, she said she could get me some very good Whiskey...that mean she's not?? @#$  %$@#&" as he walks off...

"Thanks folks, okay, guess she's not here!"

Spota and all the officers file out of the hanger with him.

Sanke waves to all of them and walks down the loading ramp to both of you - sporting a fresh shiner -  and hisses, "Hey man, you dudes don't give a fella a lot of room for these hide-and-go-seek deals. Man, it was all I could do to hide her, she fights like a tiger!"

He eyes Travis, "Hey man, I didn't trust none of them new-fangled hiding spots, so I got old school and hide her where no one is ever going to look!"

"I undid the bolts just now so she could get out again, but I'm gonna stay away from her a bit till she chills out. Crap! Here she comes! I'm gone!

With that he dashes out of sight!

You can hear Violet before you see her! She is fuming as she spins in circles looking for Sanke!

He propels both on into the Conf Area, sitting them both on oppisites of the table, makes sure the ship is theirs, with a quick Bug sweep, looks over to Sanke... "Where did they search, where did they go, did they find any of those Smuggler spaces?? By my reckoning...

600,000,000 136.1h 96.2h 78.6h 68.0h 60.9h 55.6h   Typical distance to close gas giant. Bold suggests M2 speed, don't want to break down, unless Captain says M4...

(OOC - Is Gas Giant small or large??? Need to know...)

5,000,000   12.4h   8.7h   7.1h   6.2h   5.5h   5.0h   Safe jump distance from small gas giant.
10,000,000   17.6h   12.4h   10.1h   8.8h   7.9h   7.2h   Safe jump distance from large gas giant.

So if we go M4 all the way, then 68h to Gas Giant, 1 hr Fuel top off, then either 6.2h or 8.8h to jump, 1 week jump, then time to target planet...which is???

You maneuver the ship out of the hanger and then fire off the drives. The ship hesitates for just a brief second and then slowly begins to rise. The helm feels a bit sluggish and you make a mental note to calibrate some of the settings a bit later. Spiraling up and over the base you post your flight plan with the automated ATC facility.

https://soundcloud.com/pbj44/departure-from-markos

Soon the comm board lights up as ATC orders you to shut down and land.

Ignoring the chatter you deftly touch a few of the settings on the flight board and the ship tears up through the atmosphere followed by an enormous trail. After a few moments you adjust your flight course for the large gas giant and settle in for the ride.

Violet voice pops in over the comm, “Everything is green! Looks good!”

@Radek – A message pops in on your comm link. It’s coordinates on the surface of a planet called Hideout.

Hideout: X653100-2

Hideout is a medium-sized planet about 9600km in diameter. Hideout has a thin nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere that is otherwise perfectly breathable. The surface of Hideout is roughly 26%-35% surface water (or similar fluid), which form small seas and oceans. With a low population, a great majority of the residents of Hideout can be found in one community located near a makeshift starport. The people of Hideout have no form of discernible government at all, and live in relative anarchy. Visitors to Hideout should be aware of the general lack of legal restrictions, which makes Hideout a very dangerous place. No public starports exist on Hideout, as the world is Interdicted. Hideout has Primitive technology roughly equivalent to that of the Terran Renaissance. Hideout is notable for the following Trade Codes: Low Pop, Low Tech and Poor World. Hideout owes allegiance to the FNH.

Smirking he says, "Hey man, lean over and give this crate a sniff and let me know if anything seems familiar!"

Violet nods at both of you, "Well, with the exception of the supercharger, we are now good to go. All system cross checks show green, and that time we spent calibrating the sensors was well worth it."

Sanke smiles, "The ships guns are working fine. I ran the checks backwards and forwards and couldnt find any glitches or errors. Yes or No?_

yes...(Travis, Violet, and Sanke watch the tablet...)

As all of you wait, the tablet updates and a message pops up in a window.

Sanke nods and reads a new set of coordinates.

"Looks like the drop site has been moved to an abandoned farm."

He touches area 14 on the map and glances at Travis.

"What do you think?"

Looking over the HUD display of the region you pick out a distant lake and a short time later you have successfully re-fueled.

at 1700 the ship's Comm Link chirps. A few moments later the read-out flashes - indicating that a message has been left. Playing it back:

"Okay, we're ready for the shipment, so set down in the barnyard in front of the house."

You make a pass over the abandoned farm - noting it's desolation. It's obvious that the farm has not been worked for many years.

Prior to setting down in the barnyard, Sanke and Violet move into position with Sanke first helping her move all 10 cases just inside the Starboard airlock.

The ship's powerful engines settle into a steady drone as you hover over the vast overgrown barnyard.

Setting the ship down gently, you shift the engines into standby and open the outer Starboard airlock.

Ten men exit the farmhouse and begin walking towards your ship. All are heavily armed.

Violet gasps, "These are horrible men!!!"

Filing into the farmhouse you catch glimpses of the former occupants lives as you pass through hallways glancing in passing at the dusty family pictures on the wall.

Once in the kitchen the leader opens a cellar door and descends down the dark stepway. As you move down the steps he lights an oil lantern and points to a table with several chairs around it.

"Sit down."

Once you sit down he seats himself and lights a cigar from the oil lantern.

"Drink?"

He takes a swig from a dusty jug and passes it to you.

"My name is McManus."

He nods to a man behind you who brings a briefcase to the table and opens it - exposing stacks of bundled credits.

"There's your money for the guns and ammunition. My understanding from your employer is that 50K of it belongs to you. That's fine. I want to offer you a new contract for a specific job."

"I want you to commit an act of terrorism."

She sighs, "This is not a "hard data" thing like handgun ballistics, these are just feelings and impressions. I really can't push it, only engage it."

She smiles, "Now tell me what to do. This is my first time entering a pirate fortress to plant a bomb, so forgive me if I can't be more help."

"OK, First, we need an excuse to get invited into their comm center, carrying the explosives, knowing that they probably have it well guarded. or, Second, blowing up their power supply and Antenna Farm, which is probably just as guarded. violet, what I need from you would probably be a soft, subtle "we can be trusted" type of thing. Sanke, what can you tell us about their setup???"

Sanke chew his lip thoughtfully, "Hmm...everything above ground is pretty well open - once you get past the front door. I heard some of the dudes there saying that Krag lives on the top floor and no one gets up there without a heavy escort. I do know that they searched me pretty good when I came inside. I think you're really gonna have to hide those explosives really good to beat them at their game."

"To go below ground you're gonna need to take a service elevator - there's two of them - one on each side of the lobby, and there's always a dude or two hanging around in the lobby area. Not sure of the layout downstairs - Krag don't like anyone going down there unless its one of his techs going down to fix something. I did have my ear to a door one time and heard some dude talking about "sublevel three", but I ain't sure what he was going on about."

Travis sits back and mulls over the information...after a short while, Travis sits up...

"OK, the way I see it, and if I was running the place, the first problem would be getting access, safely. If we place explosives in the Water Treatment equipment, it can be traced back to us...so I have an idea..."

Travis contemplates a few minutes...

" Something I've done successfully in the past, but am hesitant to do again, but if this works, we can hopefully be able to have a safe haven for future operations...I am going to infect this complex with 2 viruses, 1 will play hell with comms, and another that will disable the complex military encryption down to a simple one for listening in. Hopefully this might get us an invite into the comm complex to fix it, as well as disable both the main complex and the comm center over at the rocket base."

Travis looks around at the other 2...

"Sanke, you will stay hidden in the weapons center, as rescue and external eyes for us, we'll be tied together at all times with a comm dot on the three of us. Violet...you keep an eye, or mind out for any possible allies, even anybody we can trust to be a part of this crew.

Any Questions???"

Both Violet and Sanke nod in agreements.

Violet smiles, "Okay, go ahead and get started."

"Your right, go ahead and get started...set the hold up so they can see the water plant parts, but look through the other stuff, we're going in as scrape metal merchants, something all planets, even less advanced as this can use. Also look around, who knows, you might find Super-Charger parts, and I need to see anything that looks or is Comm Gear and Computer parts...OK?? I'll be prepping the Viruses..."

Violet nods and everyone gets busy. As you inspect the hold a short time later you see several boxes of computer parts strewn about. Violet smiles, "You are looking at all our engineering comp spare parts. I hope it looks convincing!"

Sanke slides up, "Okay, we're ready. Let's go do this thing!"
