Spike

I'll get Aron fully posted (what, spend his cash on hand and give a physical description, right? That's what he gets about now as I understand it... now... how much does a random collection of... acquired... medical supplies cost.... hmm.....) oh, right, finish the thought: I'll get 'im fully posted first thing in the morning. I can practically see this cat...
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.

Personality: Hendricks is a loud mouth, an asshole, but a damn fine marine. He's a professional ass-kicker, and he loves that about his job. Boo-ya.

The Butcher

So guys... should I go with the hotshot engineer, or the wise ol' doc? I'll be happy with either (hell, if it was a TT game, I'd play both).

Staying on Jae Tellona meant one of two things: mining the vast wastes of this desert world or working in the sprawling  class A starport servicing the megacorporation freighters passing through the system. Getting off Jae Tellona mean hiring onto one of those freighters or joining the Imperial Navy or Marines,

Ganimakkur Shishku opted for a third way.

Bright enough to get into an academy or college but bored and restless at the thought of more classrooms, Gani Shishku talked his way onto the free trader Sir Roger de Tourneville. Possessing no useful skills but blessed with strength and stamina, he was taken on as a cargo hand.

Running trader's cargo bay gave Gani the opportunity to learn some basic repairs as well as the ship's computer system. The captain decided to give Gani a chance to do more than keep manifests and argue with loading 'bots, introducing him to starship navigation.

Gani took his new skill to the fat trader Cipatwe Venture, and it was aboard the CV that he managed to get his pilot's ticket as first officer. It's also where he picked up the sobriquet Buzz – and an official SPA warning – following a close encounter with the Forcine highport during departure.

A consortium on Risek hired Gani as captain of the far trader Queen Mab, aboard which he served for four years, hauling and speculating through Aramis subsector, even travelling into the Vargr Extants.

Carefully banking his own cut of the profits – and taking advantage of his contacts among the shadier denizens of countless startowns – he was able to purchase his own far trader, the Sirius Moonlight, on Lunion. It's the first time after twenty-eight years as a trader he's actually his own boss.

#5
Pirate Corporal 779967 Age 26 2 Terms Cr 10000
Brawling-1, Ship Tactics-1, Streetwise-3, Tactics-1

Stuff: 1 automatic pistol, 1 shotgun, 1 blade, Cloth Armor, 100 credits worth of ammo (er....), 1000 credit 'flash roll', 200 credits of 'luxuries' (candy bars, coffee, etc...), one book on proper Vilani proceedures to Steward a Starship, several bottles of moonshine, a white 'monkey suit' jumpsuit

Aron Dvosky (Duv-skye he says), grew up among rock-rats and claim jumpers in some distant frontier system he's long forgotten. He's lived on ships his whole life, and when he got tired of being the 'rat' underfoot, and appalled at the idea of suiting up to break asteroids for twelve hours a day, he took off first chance he got in a stolen tug.  Not being well versed in the world, that quickly brought him to the attention of a local Jump Gang, so they slapped a cheap gun in his hand and put him to work as muscle.

It only took a year or two before the young man got tired of being treated like a lump of meat, and the low wages of claim jump crews hardly appealed to him, so he planned a careful mutiny.

He learned two things that day. The first was that he had no talent for leadership, nor desire for it. The second was that, no matter how successful you were, if your crew didn't trust you, you were the loneliest man in space.

So he ditched again, this time with a keener grasp of what he was doing, and he bought a ticket into more 'civilized space'.  OF course his attempts at going legit failed miserably, though it could be said that he didn't even know the meaning of the word 'legit' without a dictionary, so it wasn't long before he fell in with a crew of 'real' pirates.   The Captain found out quickly that Aron was a man of hidden talents, and Aron found out quickly that the guy who can provide basic luxuries to a crew in deep space is a popular, rich man.

So while he still carried a gun and still tossed a few unfortunates out the airlock, Aron became the go-to guy for his entire crew.  Want some fresh coffee? Aron's got a bag stashed away he'll sell you. Need to let off some steam in the local port? Aron knows a guy who knows a guy that can find you what you need...

They still thought he was stupid, still thought of him as some lump of meat who could follow orders, but they respected his ability to get shit done.

But Aron never quite forgot the dream of making it big where people don't shoot at you every day.  He never quite let go of the idea of trading up. Not just that, he started to realize his mates were junkies, looking for the next high, the next big score.  They were going to get him killed, so he cashed out, bought a ticket to Lunion, the nearest world to where they were operating and the rest is history.

Aron is a big guy, pasty-pale from a life in space, beefy but sort of soft. He tends to talk slowly and forcefully, getting his point across as directly as possible.  He looks like a thug, but his dark beady eyes glitter with intelligence and his mind is always turning situations over, looking for a new better approach.  He tends to wear old jumpsuits, faded and stained with age, or random articles found in used bins and he cuts his hair with a knife when it gets long enough to bother him, but he's learning, slowly, that appearances matter. On the street his appearance helps him, but his ambition demands more.  Not helping his general 'appearance' of stupidity is the eclectic collection of frontier dialects that pepper his speech.

Aron does tend to assume he can do anything until he's failed at it a few times. He's 'won' shootouts in his pirate days so he assumes he's handy with a gun. He's lived aboard ships all his life so he assumes he can do the job of a pilot or engineer... more if he can read a manual or reference book along the way.  In this way he tends to assume his failure to break into 'big business' wasn't because he doesn't know what he's doing but simply cliquish behavior from the guys with all the cash keeping him out. If he lives long enough he might grow out of this... eventually.

Slang lexicon:
Tenk- Ten Credit
Rokker: 'Rocker, Rock-Rat', an asteroid miner, an asteroid mining ship
Pill- 'Pillow', a prostituite or lover
Stif- moonshine
Cole- A vulgarity referring to spacing someone
Sharpie- a victim waiting to happen. A fop, a dandy, rarely: Aslan
Cuvver- vulgar reference to Vargyr
Pingu- Customs, System Police, used almost exclusively in space, rarely planetside.
Mud- Planet and people from planets. See also 'weller' , derogatory
Weller- someone from 'down the gravity well'
Vig- And extremely old term for Interest, particularly in gambling or criminal debts. Origin unknown, believed to be short for vigorish, possibly Solomani

'Tapping the Nose'- may be stated or performed as an action. In spoken form is most commonly used third person. Indicates the person see's something hidden or heard something unspoken.Often indicates secrets, or secret knowledge passing between two people.May by referencing ship's sensors, which are often in the nose of a craft, alternatively may indicate helmet to helmet communication in vaccuum, which cannot be overheard by others and could be signed so that even knowledge of the communication is unspoken.

EDIT::: To add equipment purchased (not subtracting 'cash on hand' from the total he has 8800 credits available), also attempted twice to add a picture of Moe from C&H, but failed miserably. Alas.

Sirius Moonlight

Laid down 1094, LSP yards, Strouden (0707 Lunion); first flight 1096.

The Sirius Moonlight is an unmodified type A2 far trader. The far trader uses a type 200 hull, and is capable of 1 -G and jump-2. Fuel tankage is 50 tons, and the ship incorporates fuel scoops for gas giant skimming. A computer Model/1 bis is installed adjacent to the bridge. The ship has 10 staterooms and 4 low berths. A single air/raft is carried for onworld transport. The ship is streamlined for atmospheric landings. Cargo capacity is 61 tons.

The Moonlight suffers from two quirks, her archaic ship's computer - a cheap substitute for the usual model, apparently a cost-saving measure by the original outfitter - and her noisy air system, which whistles and knocks loudly at times.

The Moonlight's hull is a plain ghost grey.

Ship's computer programs: Maneuver, Jump-1, Jump-2, Navigation, Anti-Hijack
Ship's locker: Four (4) standard vacc suits with PLSS B life support systems and two oxygen tanks each; four (4) combination filter/respirator masks; mechanical, electrical, and electronic tool kits; ten survival bubbles (one per cabin).

The Butcher

Guys, I'd rather play the doc, but if no one else rolls an engineer I'll play him. I'm fine with either, really.

To the best of my limited understanding, we can get along without a doc (someone gets badly hurt, stuff him into cold storage and run off to nearest starport), but flying off without an engineer sounds like a riskier proposition. Is that right?

Werekoala

l'd say an engineer is important, yes. :) That said, you can always hire an NPC to fill out positions left vacant if you have a character you;d rather play - used to happen all the time, so no worries.

Joshua "JB" Bruhn

Navy Lieutenant 8A8B77  Age 38  5 Terms  Cr 11000
Electronic-1, Engineering-2, Gunnery-1,
Ships' Boat-1, Vacc Suit-1
Blade, High Passage, Low Passage, 40k worth of shares in Moonlight Merchanters

JB enjoyed the Imperial Navy, but wanted more freedom to explore the galaxy, so he mustered out and signed on with the Sirius Moonlight. He's a pleasant guy, although he has a tendency to lecture about technical details that most folks aren't interested in. Since leaving the Navy he has let his beard grow in and his hair start to grow out, although he still keeps himself neat and his engine room in good order. He's fit, and still works out every morning, with sandy-blonde hair and blue-grey eyes. About 5'11" tall, he's not unattractive, but not really remarkable either. He enjoys reading and has a passion for physical books rather than digital documents, when he can find them. He has a tendency to play loud, fast music whenever he's working, and enjoys finding new and alien styles of music to blast in the engine room. He refers to the ship as "my girl" and frequently can be heard talking to it as he works.

Engineering-1 is pretty standard, but the higher the better of course. Forward Observer is used to call down orbital strikes and such (it's really a Navy skill, think in modern times about guys on the ground co-ordinating shell-fire from battleships for example). You can trade it for another Engineering if you like.

Doctor 6A5BD9 Age 46 7 Terms Cr 0
Administration-1, Blade Combat-1, Medical-4
Middle Passage, Instruments, Blade, Slug Pistol

Dr. Satyendra Pradesh is a tall, lean, middle-aged man with coppery complexion, black hair graying at the temples, and a neatly trimmed Van Dyke. Clearly born to old money, and a graduate of whatever passes for an Ivy League school in the planetary neighborhood, after a brilliant career in academic medical practice, Dr. Pradesh had a short stint as Minister of Health of some backwater planet and supposedly left in a hurry after a coup d'état, falling back on his somewhat rusted but still very dependable skills as a surgeon to survive. He's a bit on the quiet side and slightly paranoid when sober, but an exquisitely cultured and droll raccounteur when drunk (which seems to happen fairly often during jumps).

Rumors say that he left a family and a fortune (possibly acquired by way of unsavory transactions -- the fortune, not the family) behind when he left his last home, as well as a smattering of political enemies -- which explains the tendency towards paranoia, and the unwillingness to speak of the recent past.

[WK, I traded one Weapon for Instruments. I don't have any Credit left at all, and three weapons sounds like a bit too many. I totally see the sedate doctor fleeing his last post of employment armed to the teeth, and trading one of his weapons for a working set of tools, the better to ply his trade. Is that OK with you? And is it just surgical irons, or are drugs involved?]

Werekoala

Looks great (Medical 4? Damn impressive). Ok for the instruments for the gun, and a good field-grade kit will include meds as well (usually about 5-6 of each of the more common ones if I remember). The ship will have at least a "standard" medical bay as well (one table, basic supplies for minor surgeries and such). Unless you upgrade, anything major buys someone a trip to a Low Berth (cold sleep essentially).
