This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Well, I am now officially in between campaigns.. until June! Man, that's a long time for me. Thats.. longer than I have ever been out of a game since 1999 or so. I'm building a new mega-dungeon (which is fun) and organizing a "Celebration of the Legacy of Gary Gygax" at my local gamestore.. (April 12th and 26th. If you are in the Maryland area, shoot me a PM and I will give you info!).

But meanwhile, I'm between games and I just happen to have surrounded myself with all of these AD&D1e books for the Gygax thing.

I'm thinking two things:

Run something original and dungeony here at theRPGsite
OR
Run something over a virtual tabletop. I just noticed that NBoS Screenmonkey is free. (I prefer FantasyGrounds but it's pretty much set up for d20 without modifications, and it also costs people money to buy the client if they don't already have it. I'm too lazy to write modifications right now...).
But Screenmonkey is kinda old school and free.

If we do PbP:

You will need an AD&D1e Players Handbook. If you don't already have one, they cost $5.95 at RPGNow. Just post here if you want to play. Once we have 4-6 players we will start.

If we do Screenmonkey: You will need a copy of Screenmonkey Lite (the free version) and install Skype on your computer for voice chat. You will still need an AD&D1e PHB! (See above). We will also need to decide on a date and time. I am leaning towards Sundays at 1PM EST. (That's like 1800 Zulu). I dunno. Do your own conversions...

Any takers?

I'll install the software needed (assuming my IT guys don't throw a hissy) - if you'll have me. My only concern is that if we start at 1200 Central (1300 EST), I'm limited to four hours on the 5th and 12th (kids baseball practice).

That will be great-- I rarely run a game session longer than 4 hours James!

I may have to advertise this more places.

I dunno if we can match intercontinental schedules, but I´d love to take part in it. I could do 1900Z, Sunday would be fine.

EDIT: How do we roll characters? Method X?

I was thinking of using standard Method I (or is it II?).

Roll 4d6, discard the worst die, and assigned the value to whichever stat desired.

I am not using AD&D's Unearthed Arcana, but otherwise any alignment, any class in the PHB. Starting with 1st level characters.

We could use http://invisiblecastle.com for die rolls (including stats) if you want to build characters online, and then we will move to the live game.

If anyone wants to play but happens to LACK a 1st Edition PHB, they are available in PDF form for like $5.95 from RPGNow. Alternately I will post a bunch of "grab and go" characters for the taking.

A couple of caveats:

This game will be as close to the books as I can make it. Gold is turned in for experience, etc. All options will be as close to the baseline as I can manage. However, because of the online format, and because of the unique nature of AD&D1e, I will inevitably have to make some adjustments. One adjustment I had in mind was I was only going to tally experience in the home base area. So if you feel like you levelled up, head to the home base, and I will do an XP tally and we'll see about levelling. I won't do a training period like some DMs used to do. I *do* expect levelling to take place during the game.

For players of previous editions: I know how to tune encounters for D20, but in AD&D, there's kinda no such thing. So..uhh.. bear that in mind.

I'll post some sample character pretty soon.

By the way, James (and other players): You will only need Skype and your web browser to play. Basically Screenmonkey just sets me up with a locally hosted web-server (where the dice, maps, and chat are located). You won't need to use the chat since we will do like a Skype Conference call somehow.

Skype is available here:

Oh yah, one house rule I do want to use: max hit points at start. You will need them.

Just to let you know - I tried installing Skype and got some network thing.  I'm guessing it's the firewall here at work, so I'll try again at home tonight.

Are you going to set something up over at Invisible Castles? Just curious before I go and sign up or anything...

InvisibleCastle.com is just a dice-roller that allows for group validation. So you can roll up your character as in ye days of olde and nobody will think you are cheating :haw:

This game will take place on Sundays, so .. yes, probably you should be able to set it up at home. nBos Lite will NOT be required, just Skype and a browser. (And headphones with a microphone if you have that)...

I rolled me a ranger on first try:

14
17
13
15
11
08

But somehow I can´t save the result.

I have the window still open, so if you tell me how to save and send the validation, I can do so.

EDIT:

STR 14, DEX 17, CON 13, INT 11, WIS 15, CHA 8

Here´s how I want to re-arrange them:

STR 17
DEX 11
CON 14
INT 13
WIS 15
CHA 8
