Title: You know you're getting old when... [Gaming]

You know you're getting old when...

All of the players in your new Traveller game are older than the starting characters they generate.

As long as none of your Traveller players died while creating their character you're still ok...

You know you're old when you can remember Armor Class descending instead of Ascending.

You know you're old when you can remember when Elf was a class.

You know you're old when you can it was considered acceptable to throw a Disenchanter at your players.

You know you're old when you remember that a Good-aligned Drow was a novel concept.

You know you're old when you can remember when Tieflings were unheard of (me!).

You know you're old when you are using dice older than some of your players.

You know you're old when you still have and play characters that were rolled up before some of your players were born.

You know you're old if you remember Aleena as hot.
You know you're old if you hate Bargle.
You know you're old if you insist on carrying a 10' pole.
You know you're old if you remember coloring in your dice with a crayon.

- You know you are old when you say "Roll a d6" and your players of 30 years start start examining the dice and asking "Which is the d6?" - which is what always happened but now you realise that for the first time you no more have the energies to point at it.

- You know that you are old when you say "All the characters take 1d3 damage" - and when the smartest of them says "but... there is no d3..." you realise that you have no more energies, full stop.

when you dreamed of owning actual dice

when your friends OOOOed at the Efreeti cover of the DMG, and your non-gaming friends thinking it was a cool art. So metal!

When you have to explain to a purple haired pervert that a Kilrathi warrior who came to kill stuff is an ok character concept, but a catgirl prostitute is a bridge too far.

There is no Uwu here, only owie-ouchie-olly-oxen-free, with cheeto dust.

You need more than one bathroom break in a 3 hour session.
Even in previous decades, that was highly dependent upon the beer intake at the table.

I've unironically seen a catgirl prostitute done reasonably well. By which I mean "It wasn't disruptive".

Granted that wasn't a D&D campaign but more of an anime inspired fighting game (which was freaking awesome) but I have seen it done alright.

My guess would be that yes it's the same brand.

Here we have it normal, with tamarindo, with tomato & lemon juice (our lemon, so your lime), and one with tomato, lemon juice + sauces, kinda spicy.

you remember when Waldenbooks and B Daltons were your FLGS.
you remember when the DM was the most respected person at the table, not the most shit on.
you remember going to the library to read their copies of Dragon magazine.
you remember when people were able to figure out how to play games without needing a half dozen videos.
you remember not knowing the politics or opinions of anyone who wrote your favorite games. Hell not even knowing their names most of the time. I was 10+ years into the hobby before I knew who Gygax was.

Well played.  I say that anyone who was playing D&D before the release of the 1E AD&D DMG, is a true blue old school gamer.  They are the real deal.  Unfortunately, 1E AD&D was fully released when I was 9 years old; and absolutely nobody I knew in my small southern town would have allowed their kids to possess such books.  The DMG cover alone, would have been seen as an image of the devil himself.

I didn't get exposed to D&D, until the mid 1990's.

Getting frustrated with TSR's cheap dice as the edges wore down on the d20 and they would roll and roll and roll and roll...
Flinching at the memory of stepping on a d4.
Moving up from using crayons to fill in the numbers on your dice to using paint pens.
"Roll percentage dice?" *grabs two d20s.

I lived in a small southern town and had the DMG in hand in 1982.  I found the reactions mixed, but there were most definitely people who would not tolerate their kids having any contact with those books at all.  Some, who were initially concerned (like my parents) read through the book, and then shrugged wondering what the fuss was about.  I did have a pal a few years later, who had his father forbid him from playing and had him destroy his monster manual 2.  I never really understood that one, as his father was not really very religious and rarely, if ever attended church.

And now he can visit his father's gravesite, and read aloud the replacement copy he purchased online.

When you looked forward to the release of the AD&D 1e DMG.

Well, his dad was a good guy over all, and I liked him.  He could be a bit head strong, and I think this was right around the time the satanic panic was literally full bore (I think it was 1984-85).  I have serious doubts he ever thought that sort of thing, and the odd thing was, supposedly his dad did not care if he still came over to my house and played, which he did, so it was strange.  Teachers and school folks also had some interesting reactions in the bible belt around that time, again a bit of range.  I do remember the scout troop at first allowing games on campouts, and then a banning...which was also right around 1984, so oh well.

... when you wonder who did such a perfectly clean job of filling in the numbers on this black 20-sided die with liquid paper.

You know you're getting old when the paper of your character sheets are starting to yellow with age.

You know you're getting old when you played D&D before the Satanic Panic.
You know you're getting old when you your character sheet was a piece of note book paper.

You know you're getting old when the publish a NEW D&D book explaining things like "what is session zero", "you can actually TALK to monsters before killing them", or "you know, if your elf character was raised by dwarves, you could give him proficiency with battleaxes instead of longswords (two nearly identical weapons, BTW)"...

...and you realized some people are reading this for THE FIRST TIME despite playing 5e for years.
