Battle Mad Ronin

Holy Shit! That looks like a ton of fun :D It's interesting to see a Japanese (presumably) interpretation of D&D. The Thief with a longsword especially invokes Japanese Manga conventions :)

I'll have to find out if this is available for modern consoles, it's far too bad ass to pass up!

That's the little seen arcade sequel to the original D&D arcade cabinet game. Both were ported over to USA, as I have played both in the arcades here (Golfland mini-golf and Las Vegas/Reno/Lake Tahoe had some impressive arcades back in the day). They came in several cabinet sizes, but the wide screen with 4 players was the deluxe version (very much like TMNT, X-Men, or Simpsons 4 player cabinets).

The game was ported over onto the SEGA Saturn back in the day, requiring the 1 Mbit RAM cart. It was on the list of very many Sega Saturn import games I wanted to buy, and still is as it's a pain for it to show up in collector circles when I had the money. There was a deluxe packaging of both arcade games, with RAM cart, which I'm still pining for (don't need the RAM cart, but what's another one hurt?).

Since the games were arcade games you should be able to find their ROMs somewhere on the internet. The emulator you would use is MAME back in the day, there is probably a better emulator now. As with all emulation you are only allowed a 24 hour period to try before you either delete off your machine or purchase a licensed copy. Purchasing the arcade CD without the cabinet should be good enough. Depending on the fidelity of the Sega Saturn version, and from what I see it's pretty solid fidelity to the arcade itself, there could be an argument that that also qualifies for fair use license (if you cannot find and/or play an adequate Saturn ROM of same on your devices, yet can with MAME — and I hear Saturn emulation has much to be desired still).

I loved the game in the arcade. It was very Golden Axe with an inventory to fret over and lots of familiar names to geek out on. Thanks for a walk down memory lane!

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

I think it's on the Xbox live Arcade now as well.

Both D&D arcade games were redone about a year and a half ago as "Chronicles of Mystara" for all the major consoles and PC.

The two arcade games were apparently based on an ongoing campaign at TSR at the time.  That is, one of the TSR folks involved used his home campaign (w/other TSR employees) to set the background story and some of the branching events in the coin-ops.

They're very fun.  Get the ROMs and play them on MAME, if you can.

Played both at arcades and its alot of fun. Theres even branching paths to the story and things only certain classes can do. Also you get a random start item based on your name.

As for Japanese D&D.

Look up the anime series Record of Lodoss War. That is based on the novelization of a groups adventure log playing BX D&D. Three anime series, lots of novels, at least two manga series, and at least one console game.

When TSR turned them down they retooled the game into Sword World and at least one other RPG.

Record of the Lodoss War is a great Dreamcast game. Very Diablo II in playstyle, but enough craziness that it worked like a song on a controller. I wished I bought it when it was readily available, but there was too much goodness on that system to keep up.

So apparently this is "Opaopajr's video game collection regrets" topic. Any other gaps in my collection you'd care to rub salt in? :o

Too bad that New World of Darkness doesn't officially exist anymore then!

Wow, you really showed him! I bet he'll disband the club and cry himself to sleep for the rest of the year.

Uh, does the fact that I actually owned it, count?  It was a really fun game.

Wish I had an emulator for the Dreamcast though.  I miss that rig.

Just sayin'

Actually the real new World of Darkness stuff coming out of the new White Wolf is likely to be a growing discussion point over the coming year, I reckon.

But the old 'New' World of Darkness stuff is officially called Chronicles of Darkness now. 'Classic' World of Darkness remains as it always will be of course.

Didnt know they did one for the Dreamcast? I had the Famicon/SNES one. Grey Witch I think, based off the prequel manga I think. Been a while.

Friend had I believe the Berserk game for the Dreamcast. Picked up where the series left off it seemed.

I had a glance at the latest Lodoss tabletop RPG and its mutated far past what it once was. Does not even look like the same setting. Could be a spin-off.

Speaking of games based on D&D. I did a sprite pack of Lodoss characters for Unlimited Adventures for someones project. But never found out if it was completed or not. I know the Gamma World and MSH ones saw release. But the Star Frontiers one never did.
