This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Would you take a design job at WOTC

Does your way involve gnomes?

Doom

There was a time when I would have done so in a heartbeat; as it is, I'm glad my work didn't start getting accepted until I had a 'real' job.

A nice education blog.

It would depend what they wanted me to do and who they wanted me to do it with. And I guess on the larger process they're using to put material together.

I wouldn't want to design if there was no one to help me develop and test the thing, nor write if there wasn't a seasoned editor, and so on.

I could design around sacred cows or prima donnas, and I think I could take the criticism and low pay just fine.

I also might be less picky about freelancing than I would about a full time job. Likewise I might be less picky about supplement/adventure work than about core/setting work.

I could enjoy a game design job at WotC but I certainly wouldn't do it for the fame and nerdlove.

hopefully you wouldn't do it for the money. Because seriously, a management job at Mickey D's probably pays better.

No, because of the pay cut and because at the first meeting where they ask "Let's give a frank, honest, hard look at what we are doing wrong" I would answer truthfully - and thus get axed at the first opportunity.

I call it "Being thrown out the Garden of Eden for NOT having eaten the Fruit". Been there, done that, got the t-shirt to prove it.

This is a little bit naive. People often think that doing something that gives pleasure (comics, show-biz, RPGs, videogames...) is as pleasurable as experiencing it. It isn't. It is a job like any other.

My father is a petrolchemical engineer. He designs and builds titanic machines used in refinery complexes. When I look at him I notice two things: A) He is still enjoying his job at 75 more than I'm enjoying mine and B) he makes a shitload of money anyway.

NEVER believe the tunes of those who say "You will be paid shit, but, hey!, you are doing your dream job!" Point to them a professional NFL player. You won't be called back.
For every idiot who denounces Ayn Rand as "intellectualism" there is an excellent DM who creates a "Bioshock" adventure.

Yep.  One of the first things you learn as an adult when you start getting real jobs - people generally hate it when someone has an idea on how to improve things, especially when they are currently doing something terrible.  They pretty much just want you to shut up and do it their way.

I can't think of a bigger nightmare than getting a job doing something that I formerly liked as a hobby.  Then I'd likely not only still hate my job but not even have the hobby anymore as a distraction.

Kudos to your father for being one of those rare people who actually like their job.

I would not be one of those people.  I hate my job; and I don't mean the actual place I work, I mean the entire career/field I'm in.  But I'm good at it and it pays well so I'm kind of stuck.  Other jobs/careers always fall into one of two categories: a) jobs I'd like more but wouldn't be good at/qualified for; or b) jobs I'd like more but don't pay enough for me to live on.

No because I have issues with parent company and WoTC has a history of takign really creative people and not letting them do wha they want.
