This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Would you play in a setting where homosexuality was the norm?

Hmm. The Left Hand of Darkness, possibly? That might go a little further, though.

(By the way, one of my little old game projects was loosely inspired by the Finnish fantasy novel Pimeästä Maasta by Maarit Verronen, which is set in a world where the division between sexes doesn't exist.)
Previously known by the name of "GrimGent".

A 80ish twist on Logan's Run. Where everyone dresses like Boy George and Depeche Mode. You in?

Like I said, no plans to run anything like this, I just wondered if it would be off-putting to have details like that as part of the setting.

EDIT-Well hell, now I do want to run it :D

I'm not sure if I find it all that interesting, but as a cultural background in a campaign with other stuff going on, I'd have no problem with it.

But just to be sure, if you play a gay, you don't actually turn gay in real life, right?

Quote from: TechnomancerI actually had Delany in mind, along with some of Ursula K Le Guin and Joe Haldeman's stuff.  So what it sounds like is that something that works in a novel and makes it interesting might be annoying in a game.

Interesting.  Triton is one of my all-time favorite thought experiments along this line.

In light of Kyle's and Doc Rotwang's posts, though, I suppose this setup would be interesting as long as there's more to the setting than just the sexual politics.  It's just that your original post presented that aspect - and that aspect only - without any other info, that I jumped to conclusions about motive.  Then again, if there's not at least some focus on the sex, why include such a detail at all?

I guess it would be doable, but you'd have to be really careful in how you construct the setting.  And you'd have to still provide all the good game-y things that gamers want to do.
For fuck\'s sake, these are games, people.

And no one gives a fuck about your ignore list.

Of course you do, just like playing a magic-user means you get to learn magic in real life.

Quote from: DwightSome sort of asexual reproduction (tube babies in a high tech setting?). Or few breeders, many workers type culture (roughly mimicking ants/bees). I think people are imagining the worst it could be (like that Mary-Sue Wrathru (sp?) game). I think there are potential settings that aren't "preachy", especially in the area of Sci-Fi.
Here is an interesting idea.

Far future:
The world is made up of workers. All male workers. All human life is reproduced in cloning vats and females are not manufactured due to a plague carried by animals that infects the planet some 500 years ago. Eggs were harvested from the last viable females and every 100 years or so women are produced to replenish the egg supply. They are raised in "clean" environments separated from the population.

Now, the group is made up of the scientists and a group of women from the latest batch. The lab has been breached by the Stop Women Now organization that believes women caused the plague (and pretty much anything bad). Thinking they will die shortly, the surviving women and scientists flee the facility to find themselves...on Mars with no apparent infection! This is a terraformed Mars and the government has been covering up the end of the plague...or is it the plague never made it to Mars. We must know!

You could have adventures in hunting through gov data farms/facilities, hunting the cure, finding out the women are really something not quite human, maybe even part Martian. Lots of possible fun.

Sexual politics? Reproduction politics! See my comment about Logan's Run.

EDIT: And HinterWelt's.  EDIT2: Although Bill seems confused, everyone knows women are from Venus. :haw:

Your character can only become a 9th Level Faggot if you the player suck cock for reals!

This post intentionally crude. ;)

I still think you are reading sexual politics into it when that isn't necessary. Not that one doesn't come with the other.

In the StarCluster universe, there are whole types of relationships that are not common here - polygamy, ployandry, time-limited contract marriages, line marriages, crew marriages, triads, quads and other group marriages, self-reproduction via cloning, and a whole host of other relationships. You will find these mentioned in odd places, like the Religion guide, or the Starship Crew guide, or the Biotech guide. They are not in any way central to the game, and aren't in the core book, but if you want to base something around these relationships, they are there. Generally, it never comes up.

Quote from: HinterWeltI wouldn't play just based on that premise since, well, it's weak sauce. As part of a setting I am interested in, say, an ancient Egypt or Brotherhood of Thebes, sure.

Ditto.
