This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: Settembrini;524180It is unfathomable to me how Grognard can be abbreviated "Grog".
It should be impossible for nearly everyone speaking an indo-germanic idiom.

There is not even a sound for that kind of isolated "g" in most languages! What is it called, a glottal stop? But without vowels to fo''ow? No you 'i'nd't! fu'' ''u?! Or with plural s to follow???

Ta'es ba''s!

Maybe hungarians, aztecs or bushmen can do that, you do not speak any exotic languages, do you?
Oh well, there's goes any hope of getting people to play Ars Magica.

Unless of course I move to Budapest!

Quote from: Dodger;524614What the fhtagn are you talking about? "Grog" is pronounced exactly the same as "grognards", just without the "nards".

Ahem.

So, what Ben and Melan said made sense. Grog I can grok (as well as drink). And never intended to pretend otherwise.

But your sentence, cited fully in this here post of mine, is illogical. The sound  at the end of the "grog-" part of the word "grognards" without the "-nards" part is alien to most languages.

Could Dodger be meaningfully abbreviated with Dod? Is the sportsteam colloquially known as "the Dods"? "Did you see the latest Dods game?"

Actually, take it from a Frenchman, but the sounds from "groGNard" and "groG" are not the same. "GN" is a sound of its own, in French. It's not said "grog-né" it's said "gro-nié". Grognard in French is pronounced "groniar", NOT "grog-nar". Like "oignon" in French which you basically pronounce "onion" with "on" being as well a sound of its own.

Yeah but we're not speaking French. We're speaking gamerese, in which grognard is pronounced (ironically, mind you) with two hard Gs. ;-)

Which is patently wrong, my dear Dodd-gher!*

'cause ye very here old term of grognard is taken from....Napoleon's army! Whodathunk?!

And by whom? Oi veh! Those educated wargamers! Them basterdz.

So anybody who mocks a grognard abbreviating "grog" shows he has NEVER been in a conversation with anyone who has the bona fides to be either called or mocked to be one.

He shows he is just regurgigating (sp?) something he picked up on the internets a year ago.

I piss on such pop-hate.

Who be hating?  I am celebrating.  If you are a Carter Grog, wear it like a badge of honor, likewise a Reagan II grog.  For example, I am a Clinton I Grog, and damn  proud.

As to our (mis)use of the word, blame it all on Grognardia!  He learned me the word in 2008!

I'm sure this has been said already but grog is just a cheap horrid alcohol drink made famous by seafarers, legal or not. Got no idea what "nard" brings to the meaning of the word beyond the obvious, sorry. :D
