This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

We'll never reach 500 posts at this rate. :D

In all seriousness I vaguely recall when 4e was introduced that there were people upset over it. I recall buying the 4e books at the time, briefly reading through them deciding that maybe my nephew would like them, and giving them away. I just don't play D&D style games.

if they introduce a 5e, or some sort of equivalent, I think I'll pass. I have enough 3.5e books to sate any fantasy style gaming I might want, and my players are familiar with it. In order to sell me on a new edition or what not they'd have to dig deep into their bag of tricks and get our attention. (Because any game I'll play has to get my players on board.)

Let me see if I can help with that.

The reason many people dislike 4e is that they are trapped in the past and while viewing the world through their nostalgia goggles cannot recognize 4e as the paragon of cutting edge game design it represents, and instead would rather cling to their outdated  and crappy old games as once they did to their mother's apron strings.

I'd rather play WoW and MTG at the same time than play 4e. I mean it's pretty much the same thing right?

OMG why can't you understand that 4e was needed to make fighters a viable character class choice!  In all earlier editions of the game they're just baggage handlers who have nothing to compete with save or die spells!

(Am I doing this right, guys?)

Alternately:

OMG 4e is just a board game to drive sales of minis and pogs.  You literally can't play the game as written without a detailed map that you can only buy from WotC.  They've totally turned the game into checkers.  Also, anime or something.

Anime? ANIME?! GAH
This must be reversed. As we go into 5th ed, I must be consulted!

I have literally never seen people role play with 4e. I'm sure you can. I knew a group that role played magic the gathering. I've just not seen anyone to with 4e. I personally found the game totally detached.

I played a game of 4E once where the GM's girlfriend was trying so hard to actually roleplay and be the Noble Hero cleric and talk to people and everyone else was running around with their gonzo PHB7 race/class combos brawling with each other whenever they got bored.  It was quite sad, really.

I've seen the exact same thing with every other edition of D&D, though, so.
D&D is becoming Self-Referential.  It is no longer Setting Referential, where it takes references outside of itself. It is becoming like Ouroboros in its self-gleaning for tropes, no longer attached, let alone needing outside context.

At convention I refuse to play 4e as a game only. I have a couple of stock personalities I use to roleplay with at Con games. I use my roleplaying to mess around with the adventure in a way that doesn't cause the event to run over time or fail to achieve the objective.  I find that humor to be the most effective approach.

I refereed a handful of 4e games and I made sure that the players roleplayed.

This is a game I ran back in August.

In the end 4e is no better or no worse than any other RPG for roleplaying. It is up the referee to make sure that roleplaying is part of the campaign. If the referee treats it like a boardgame then it how it will feel.
