This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: Spinachcat;338851The interesting part was the "20M people have played D&D and 6M currently play" across the world.

I would love to see where they got those numbers.   Sounds like highly exaggerated bullshit - even if you exchange D&D for "all paper & pen RPGs".

That's about half the current active player base of WoW.

That doesn't seem patently ridiculous.

Not that I know, or know how Wizards arrived at that number, but if someone said to me "half as many people play D&D as play WoW" I'd say "yep, sounds right".

Quote from: Girl;338841Too bad they dont give them jail time.
Jail time for something like copyright violation sounds ridiculous, to me.  If the guilty parties make financial restitution, that sounds fine.  Why should taxpayers have to fund incarceration for non-violent criminals when justice can be served by having them make financial recompense?
The problem is not that power corrupts, but that the corruptible are irresistibly drawn to the pursuit of power. Tu ne cede malis, sed contra audentior ito.

Some people are filled with vengeance?

So let them pay for the jail.  :p

Quote from: Narf the Mouse;339000...It's annoying. So many replies I've tried and none of them are helpful.

It's your problem. Deal with it.

That's the best I can come up with.

What

I don't care. I don't play WotC games anyway. Basically I'm just saying that this result has no effect on my piracy habit.

And I'm saying your phobia of 'sweaty nerds' has more to do with your mindset than actual nerds.
The main problem with government is the difficulty of pressing charges against its directors.

Given a choice of two out of three M&Ms, the human brain subconsciously tries to justify the two M&Ms chosen as being superior to the M&M not chosen.

Quote from: jswa;338993I will continue to download books to flip through them in order to decide whether or not to purchase.

I am not fond of wading through an ocean of sweaty, disgusting nerd flesh in order to check out a product, so I won't.

Except this is bullshit.

I absolutely agree that every book should have either a first chapter or other preview available online.   That is only smart business.   Previewing a book should not be a hassle.

However, there is no "ocean" in any FLGS or bookstore.  Unless a Game Day is happening, I never see more than one or two people browsing a game store, and very rarely browsing the RPG section.

I have a hard time with 50%.  6M worldwide should be at least 3M in the US and I would be surprised the current active gamer population tops 1M.

And when I say "active gamer", I mean "plays once per month"

Heaven forbid that someone actually goes to a Game Store or Convention and maybe tries out the game by playing a demo before buying it...

And they rise up to defend their honor!

Mistwell

I believe the number comes from a survey, and the number is not meant to refer to 4e, but all versions of D&D.  In fact I believe they found a ton of people still playing their heavily house ruled 1e games years later.

This all comes from a thread a couple of years ago, so I may be mis remembering.

Quote from: ggroy;339284It may be from a survey WotC did back in 1999.

especially when the book isn't even in the shop to begin with.

without the means to look through the product in this fashion you are certainly denying yourself the means to make a sale. so downloading isn't the negative thing some idiots think it is.
"Ghost Whistler" is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Parental death, alien battles and annihilated worlds.

the only way to properly preview something is to release the whole thing. that way people can examine what the want how they want rather than just the table of contents and the first two pages of the intro.
