This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). I was right, WotC is apparently ending its regular printing of dead-tree books.

If they don't backtrack and the signs are to be trusted, this is gonna be huge. I feel like it's the end of a corporate era.

Well, I wasn't into the current edition anyway. But anything going forward, I like having dead tree books to read at my lesiure that don't need a device to read. So I guess I'll keep on not buying WOTC D&D.
The notion of an exclusionary and hostile RPG community is a fever dream of zealots who view all social dynamics through a narrow keyhole of structural oppression.

A bunch of people have said this.  You certainly aren't the only one.  And there actions made the fact they are dumping books perfectly clear.

Too many good OSR books out there to enjoy to give WOTC another dime.

My players and I are loving OSE.

This is devastating news.  Now I can't not buy books I have no interest in since they're not going to be printed in the first place because WOTC feels the same way.

Thor's Nads

Oh no, you mean I can't buy physical copies of woke radical leftist desecrations of my favorite game? Whatever will I do? I guess I will go wallow in my pile of OSR and collection of classic OD&D, Basic D&D, and AD&D books that fill my shelves that I won't be able to exhaust in a lifetime.

I do weep for future generations though. May the kindle of OSR light a fire that burns for ages in the imaginations of creative gamers of the future. And rest knowing that someday the copyright to D&D will expire, we may not live to see it but our grandchildren can celebrate that day.

Oh no what shall I do? I will just keep playing AD&D, B/X, CoC, Runequest, and slew of other games. I have nough gaming material to outlast my remaining years, and when I do want new game books the OSR publishers have everything I would want anyway. This should be interesting. Can't wait to see WOTC revenue reports the quarter after One D&D launches.

Quote from: Old Geezer;724252At some point it seems like D&D is going to disappear up its own ass.

I'll believe it when it actually happens.

This could be another one in the long long line of idiot marketing ploys. Another lie in growing heap of lies.

Will be hilarious to see how they fuck up the digital side. And they will.

Eventually they will probably try to go to some subscription only format so you no longer even own the PDFs and they can yank everything you bought.

If you look at the job application for the VP of Digital Publishing, that is already the model they are interested in (its one of the hiring qualifications they're looking for, experience with subscription services).

Which just shows how out of touch wotc is with their own product as they already had it. I mean this whole "D&D is undermonetized - we need a digital platform!" joke was because they did not even know they were already doing this with Beyond.

wotc will shoot themselves in the foot and the head all at once. Failure is the only option with them.

I'll own nothing (new) of wotc's. And be happy. Just like I was from 3e through 4e (and I got the 4e D&D Gamma World and was not happy.)

It is a significant milestone in the history of D&D; if they abandon printed books, except for special collector's edition print runs.

Going all digital via subscription, would allow them to implement global rules updates with a single click.  A true SJW dream.

A shift to a digital subscription model has been expected for some time because it is the only way that WotC can achieve the kind of recurrent spending that they're aiming for. I just hope that most of the weirdos will then disappear inside WotC's "walled garden."
