SPECIAL NOTICE
Malicious code was found on the site, which has been removed, but would have been able to access files and the database, revealing email addresses, posts, and encoded passwords (which would need to be decoded). However, there is no direct evidence that any such activity occurred. REGARDLESS, BE SURE TO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS. And as is good practice, remember to never use the same password on more than one site. While performing housekeeping, we also decided to upgrade the forums.
This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

This is from a thread over on rpg.net.

Apparently, at least currently, this includes re-downloads.  I wonder why, but I know that we'll probably never get a satisfactory answer.

Yet another futile effort which will inevitably make honest customers angry and pirates laugh?

Waaay more likely to be financial - as in "We could make more money selling these ourselves."

I doubt some executive found PHBs on rs.4chan and just said "Oh wow - we need to stop this!"

I would also be surprised if they didn't honor previous download agreements.  I could be wrong, but I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt.

Anything they may say about piracy is a cover.  They want to keep the 3.x and earlier stuff out of people's hands.  I would assume that Paizo will get hit with a cease and desist next.

While I agree with this, Stormbringer does bring up an interesting theory.  We'll have to see what shakes out with Paizo in the next couple of days.

Update from Lisa Stevens, CEO of Paizo:

My question: Has WotC asked the same thing from Paizo?

Yes.  You have until the end of today to buy any PDFs you might want.  Also, you will want to make sure you download any PDFs that you have already purchased.  We will have a more formal announcement being sent out to all our customers once it is approved by Wizards of the Coast.

I almost wish I wasn't selling my 3.5 collection in favor of pdfs now.  Oh well, I'll just pirate what I already own if I can't redownload them later.

Good thing I went over to Paizo and snatched up a first edition PHB, DMG and MM.  I will have to wait to see what WotC does and get the MMII later.

It appears they have. I expect the retroclones to take off even more for older rules. People who want originals and modules will just get them from bootleg sources where they are apparently easy to find.

Even if WOTC opens their own store selling these items, many people will not trust it has they have will have heard that WOTC already screwed over PDF buyers once.

I strongly encourage people to burn their PDF's to a disk, to save them for their own long term use.
