This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

So far this has apparently only affected WotC and TSR products available as PDFs. It appears to be an attempt to garner a larger share of the market. The questions is, will WotC now try and do something about the d20 OGL license third party products that are out there.
"Meh."

Interesting point, although I am not sure there is much they would be able to do about those.  The OGL is valid in perpetuity, so WotC can't really pull the license and get the 3rd parties to stop producing or selling.

Yesterday, they decided to sue some people pirating their work.

Today they say,
Quote from: some Wizards lackeyHey all. I wanted to step in and add shine a mote of light on the subject.

Unfortunately, due to recent findings of illegal copying and online distribution (piracy) of our products, Wizards of the Coast has decided to cease the sales of online PDFs. We are exploring other options for digitial distribution of our content and as soon as we have any more information I'll get it to you.

Well, I was wrong.

This went from "Understandable business decision" to "Ridiculous anti-piracy measure that won't work" real damn quick.

So, I am sticking with the 'remove all previous' content theory, then.

Over at ENWorld from "WotC_Trevor" :

"Hey all. I wanted to step in and shine a mote of light on the subject. First off, this cesation of PDF sales has absolutely nothing to do with the Internet Sales Policy. I know it's the 6th of April and I can definitely see how the two would appear linked, but the truth is, this is a completely seperate matter.

I'm expecting the 'piracy' excuse will soon give way and they'll announce opening up their own online PDF shop.

It really reminds me of stuff Games Workshop pulled with online vendors a while back... though there was no piracy excuse floated in that one.

Spinachcat

This is bad news for RPGnow and all the PDF publishers.  I expect this is another move to bring control of the D&D IP in-house.   The piracy noise is a joke.

Quote from: Silverlion;294553I strongly encourage people to burn their PDF's to a disk, to save them for their own long term use.

Absolutely.

If anything, I'd say "DRM protected download available for purchase if you have a DDI subscription"
