This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

wizard business: trading unique spells

so, first let me say i hate the idea of trading gold or mundane treasure for magic. i think it makes magic waay cool to only be able to trade other magic for it.

i also think that one of the things wizards would do to gain prestige among the wizarding community would be to create new spells. so, the question is this:

if a wizard creates a general unique spell for levels 1-9, what level magic item could he expect to get for it?

What would be a fair trade for unique spells of different levels? Would one wizard trading a unique 9th level for an 8th level and 7th level unique spell be fair?

I know a lot of this has to do with how much an individual wizard needs a spell that does a specific thing, but i'm just looking for a general guideline.
at the moment of sacrifice let no blood be spilled!
