Title: Will D&D 5e stay 'Evergreen' ?
Post by: Drude on October 14, 2021, 04:01:41 AM
For all 5.5/50th Anniversary edition is not being touted as a new edition, surely over the next two years they'll be itchy to tinker with it further mechanically and then the claims of full backwards compatibility will become increasingly shaky ?

And now that everyone has had chance to play up to high levels, surely people notice where the game breaks down and needs fixing ?

Or is it all mother-may-I so any changed game mechanics may go unnoticed because of handwavy lazy DMs so no-one cares anyway as long as it feels right ?

I think it will be “evergreen” in the sense of them never doing another official editon, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t going to update it like it was an MMO so if you picked up books spaced years apart you’d only recognize the barest bones of similarity.

It will be marketed as evergreen.  It won't be.

5e doesn't really break at high level ime  The most broken level is 1st!

Breaking at high level was really just a 3e thing, though 4e has some issues with grind.

5e is just generally crap. So it will be evergreen like moss on a rotting corpse.

It hasn't been evergreen since they released Xanathar's Guide and started the power-creep ball rolling. Tasha's Cauldron was the wrecking ball that finally toppled 5E and turned it into yet another hot, bloated mess in need of a reset. Heck, when players are celebrating the release of a new edition or half-edition (which is what the upcoming "evolution" is), then you know the current edition has been killed dead -- in this case, through designer malfeasance. Unfortunately, the people designing the new edition are the same ones who killed the last one, so you know the new one is going to be bad. Odds are it will be even worse than what we have now. At least the original 5E had some competent people involved. The upcoming "evolution" has no such advantage.

If you are looking for an evergreen DnD, then I believe that DnD Essentials was advertised as being evergreen.
