This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

When do you retire?

I don't see what character retirement and campaign retirement have to do with each other?

I don't think they have to go hand in hand.

We run a series for each particular game.

It might go 3-5 sessions. It could go 10-14 sessions.

Once we reach a certain point, we move to another GM and another game.

Sometimes, we'll come back to the same characters to see what their next adventure is going to be about.

Sometimes we don't.

It has been great.

I killed one series off early because I was completely bored as the GM. I learned this a long time ago as a GM. Just don't run a game if you are bored with that particular game. It will not only suck for you, it will REALLY SUCK for your players.

Well, character "retirement" is something in my game that happens mainly when the player himself feels that he's taken the character as far as he wants to.  In some cases, its  forced upon that player, when his character would basically choose to leave the default group or structure of a setting (for example, he really feels his character would stay behind to do something important to him on some planet, town, etc. while the rest of the party moves on).

Campaign retirement takes one of two forms: either the campaign stops being fun (or as fun) anymore and its time to let it go; or its still going strong but reaches some convenient or natural end-point where basically the major events of the campaign have played themselves out and to continue would be either repetition or anti-climactic.
